Summary

After makemigrations, the field a RemoveField drops is already gone from models.py. _check_RemoveField emitted nothing in that branch, so blast_radius never got a target for it, even though that's the moment code still reading the column breaks. This emits an info risk, remove_field, there (option 1 from #140, matching what the comment in that branch already promised), and makes the MCP blast_radius tool reject an unknown severity instead of quietly treating it as critical.

Before (fixture from the issue: RemoveField(model_name="product", name="legacy_code"), field already removed from shop/models.py, shop/legacy_views.py still filters on it):

$ django-orm-lens blast-radius --severity info
no schema-changing operations found — nothing to review.

After:

$ django-orm-lens blast-radius --severity info
   shop.product.legacy_code [RemoveField]
     info: remove_field (high) shop/migrations/0002_remove_legacy.py:6
Removes field 'legacy_code' from 'product'; it is no longer in the current models.py.
fix: Confirm no queries, serializers or templates still reference 'product.legacy_code'.
     still referenced in 2 place(s): 1 certain, 0 likely, 1 possibly
       other/certain shop/legacy_views.py:5 return Product.objects.filter(legacy_code="x")

The default (--severity critical) output is unchanged, so CI gates on critical aren't affected. migration-risk --severity info shows one more line per dropped column, which you said was fine.

Choices you may want to change:

  • Confidence is high: the parser has confirmed the field is gone from models.py, so the drop itself is certain. Easy to switch to low to match the *_unverified rules.
  • INVALID_SEVERITY uses the same {"error", "hint"} envelope as MISSING_NAME. The CLI already restricts --severity with argparse choices, so only the MCP path needed the check.

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking, restores expected behaviour)
  • Feature (non-breaking, adds a capability)
  • Breaking change (existing users have to update config or code)
  • Docs / README / comments only (no runtime effect)
  • Internal refactor (no behaviour change, no public API change)
  • Dependency bump
  • CI / build / tooling

Test plan

  • test_migration_risk.py: test_negative_remove_field_gone_from_current_schema now also checks that the gone-field case emits remove_field at info (and still no remove_field_still_referenced / remove_field_unverified).
  • test_blast_radius.py, new RemovedFieldBlastRadiusTest (the fixture from the issue, plus a view still filtering on the field): the dropped field becomes the shop.product.legacy_code target with legacy_views.py in its impact; the MCP tool returns it for severity: "info" and "all"; the default critical still returns no targets.
  • test_mcp_server.py: blast_radius returns INVALID_SEVERITY for "high", and every documented value is accepted.

5 of the new tests fail on main and pass with the fix. The other 2 pass on both and guard the existing behaviour.

cd cli && python -m pytest -q                   # 503 passed, 45 subtests passed (Python 3.12)
python -m ruff check django_orm_lens tests # All checks passed
python -m mypy django_orm_lens # no issues in 18 source files

Checklist

  • I ran the full test suite locally (cd cli && pytest -q for Python, npm test for TypeScript) and it is green
  • I added or updated tests that cover the change (bugfixes should get a regression test)
  • If the change is user-facing I updated the CHANGELOG under ## [Unreleased]
  • If the change touches the MCP tool contract (new tool, new arg, new error code) I updated the tool description in mcp_server.py and the relevant tests in test_mcp_server.py
  • If this is a breaking change I called it out under ## Summary above and suggested a migration path

Also documented remove_field in docs/rules/migrations.md and the skill's migration playbook table.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Removed database fields are now reported as informational migration risks, with potential references in queries, serializers, and templates highlighted in impact reports.
    • The blast-radius tool now rejects unsupported severity values with a clear error.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on the removed-field risk and severity options.

…ROWNINGdev#140)

After makemigrations the dropped field is no longer in models.py, and
_check_RemoveField emitted nothing in that branch, so blast_radius never
got a target for it. Emit an info risk, remove_field, as the comment there
already promised. The MCP blast_radius tool also rejects an unknown
severity with an INVALID_SEVERITY error instead of treating it as critical.

📝 Walkthrough

The migration analyzer now reports an informational risk when a RemoveField field is absent from the current schema. The MCP blast_radius tool rejects unknown severity values. Tests and documentation cover the new risk and severity behavior.

Changes: RemoveField risk reporting

Report removed fields as informational risks
cli/django_orm_lens/migrations_parser.py, cli/tests/test_migration_risk.py, cli/tests/test_blast_radius.py, docs/rules/migrations.md, skills/django-orm-lens/references/migration-playbook.md
The analyzer emits an informational remove_field finding when the removed field is absent from the current schema. Tests check the finding and its blast-radius target, including severity filtering. Documentation describes the rule and possible remaining references.

Blast-radius severity validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate blast-radius severity
cli/django_orm_lens/mcp_server.py, cli/tests/test_mcp_server.py, CHANGELOG.md
The MCP tool returns INVALID_SEVERITY for unknown values and accepts critical, warning, info, and all. Tests and the changelog describe this behavior.

Explanation

Issue #140 requires a RemoveField target after the field is absent from models.py, with remaining references included. The reviewed changes add an informational remove_field risk in that case. RemovedFieldBlastRadiusTest verifies the shop.product.legacy_code target and the legacy_views.py impact. The same tests verify info and all visibility and preserve the default critical behavior. The MCP handler also rejects unknown severity values with INVALID_SEVERITY, which addresses the issue's severity-validation concern. Regression tests cover the migration risk and MCP behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #140. Parser logic implements the missing risk. Blast-radius tests verify the target and impact. MCP logic validates the documented severity values. Changelog, migration-rule documentation, and the migration playbook document the resulting behavior. No unrelated runtime behavior or unrelated scope is demonstrated.

Reject an explicitly empty severity.

If an MCP caller passes "severity": "", Line 323 changes it to "critical" before this check. The tool then returns critical-only results instead of the documented INVALID_SEVERITY error. Apply the default only when severity is omitted, then validate an explicitly supplied value.

Update the documented rule count.

Adding remove_field brings this page to 17 rules, but Line 3 still says 16. The migration playbook also says 16 at Lines 6 and 10. Update all three counts so readers can reconcile the rule list with its stated total.

Merged, thanks @vishalhabib99. A thorough fix: the before/after output, INVALID_SEVERITY for the MCP path, and docs plus the skill table updated in the same PR. high confidence is right, since the field is confirmed gone. The branch predated py-1.13.4, so the CHANGELOG entry landed in the released section on merge; #165 moves it to Unreleased. #139 was fixed in parallel by #160, so nothing is left on your list there.

#161 was branched before py-1.13.4 and its entry landed in the released section on merge. #160 had no entry.
