Summary

Detect N+1 relation access within loops over sliced QuerySets, such as Post.objects.filter(... )[:50]. QuerySet slices remain lazy and iterable, so they now follow the existing queryset analysis path.

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking, restores expected behaviour)

Test plan

  • PYTHONPATH=cli .venv-nplusone-test/bin/python -m pytest cli/tests -q
  • Added a regression test covering for post in Post.objects.filter(...)[:50].

Note: uv run --project cli pytest ... cannot currently resolve this repository’s optional dependency set across its declared Python range, so the suite was executed in an isolated Python 3.11 environment with pytest installed.

Checklist

  • I ran the Python test suite locally and it is green
  • I added a regression test that covers the change
  • I updated the CHANGELOG under ## [Unreleased]

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • N+1 query detection now identifies loops over sliced QuerySets, whether the slice is used directly, stored in a variable, or returned by a helper.
    • These findings include eager-loading recommendations, matching those provided for unsliced QuerySets.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the Unreleased changelog to describe N+1 detection for sliced QuerySets.

Walkthrough

The analyzer now handles sliced QuerySets in method chains and loop iterables. It skips indexed subscripts. Tests cover direct iteration, variable assignment, and helper-returned slices. The changelog records the change.

The analyzer unwraps slices while resolving method chains and loop iterables, and skips indexed subscripts. Tests cover N+1 findings and select_related suggestions for directly iterated, assigned, and helper-returned sliced QuerySets. The changelog documents the update.

Some sliced QuerySet loops can still miss N+1 findings. These narrow gaps merit follow-up.

Addressed the sliced-chain review gap in 7848084. _collect_call_chain_methods now unwraps slice subscripts wherever they appear while preserving indexed-access exclusion, so assigned and helper-returned sliced QuerySets retain their method chains. Added regression coverage for both paths.

Minor · Unwrap consecutive slices in direct loops. · query_analyzer.py:1084-1087

cli/django_orm_lens/query_analyzer.py:1084-1087
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Unwrap consecutive slices in direct loops.

visit_For reaches _process_loop for direct loops. With Post.objects.all()[:50][:10], the code removes only the outer slice, leaves an inner ast.Subscript, and returns before analyzing the QuerySet. Django documents that slicing an unevaluated QuerySet returns another unevaluated QuerySet, so this valid nested slice can be missed.

Suggested fix
         if isinstance(iter_node, ast.Subscript):
-            if not isinstance(iter_node.slice, ast.Slice):
-                return
-            iter_node = iter_node.value
+            while isinstance(iter_node, ast.Subscript):
+                if not isinstance(iter_node.slice, ast.Slice):
+                    return
+                iter_node = iter_node.value

Merged, thanks @syedmustafan. #168 landed first, so I merged main into your branch to resolve the CHANGELOG conflict (both entries kept). I'll also unwrap consecutive slices like qs[:50][:10] in the loop path, as CodeRabbit noted. Ships in py-1.13.6.

FROWNINGdev added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 28, 2026
- nplusone reports loops over sliced querysets (#167) and now also
  unwraps a slice of a slice (qs[:50][:10]).
- Nested loops inherit the outer queryset's eager loading and suggest the
  full relation path such as product__category (#168).
- Agent skill 1.2.0: Playbook D says which release links inner loops to an
  outer prefetch, and keeps the manual checks for older releases.
- Tests import unittest.mock directly (CodeQL py/import-and-import-from).
