fix(nplusone): inherit outer eager loading in nested loops and suggest full relation paths - #168
Conversation
Track relation targets and enclosing queryset eager paths so nested loops report only unloaded relations and suggest complete lookup paths. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6.1 Sol <noreply@openai.com>
Treat chained queryset transformations as fresh queries so partial or filtered nested accesses remain visible to the detector. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6.1 Sol <noreply@openai.com>
Retain exact inverse field identities for reverse-FK manager iteration, preserve independent uncached relation findings, and pin single-hop inheritance and scope boundaries. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6.1 Sol <noreply@openai.com>
Preserve intermediate eager coverage for aliased Prefetch destinations and stop ancestor lookup at nearer bindings in nested loop targets. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6.1 Sol <noreply@openai.com>

helper’s formal-to-actual argument binding when matching the returned receiver
to an enclosing loop target. Inherit eager paths only when that receiver
resolves to the actual loop variable; otherwise, return no inherited paths.

- Around line 316-331: Update the assertions in the test using `manager_call` so
filtered manager variants expect an outer-loop finding even when eager loading
is enabled; keep the empty expectation only for bare `all()` with eager loading.
Also update the scanner’s access collection and prefetch check so
reverse-manager chains containing `filter` are not treated as cache-covered,
including `all().filter(...)`.

Use one cache-reader predicate for direct and inherited relation coverage. Record query-changing manager operations and cover them across relation shapes and eager-loading states. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6.1 Sol <noreply@openai.com>
Recognize documented queryset operations and async variants while preserving contains and async cache readers. Treat empty prefetch calls as adding no lookups and correct the nested manager control to report both outer and inner queries. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6.1 Sol <noreply@openai.com>
Limit cache invalidation to complete relation receivers ending at a related manager. Preserve eager-loaded prefixes for scalar, unknown-suffix and single-valued receivers while retaining real-manager findings, and document the behavior. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6.1 Sol <noreply@openai.com>

Heads-up: this branch lives in an organization-owned fork, and GitHub doesn't let maintainers push to those. If anything needs changing, just say so here and I'll make the change on this branch right away. |

Merged, thank you @Nitjsefnie. I ran it together with #167 on the examples from #145 and #146: the fully prefetched inner loop is now quiet and the chain suggests |
- nplusone reports loops over sliced querysets (#167) and now also unwraps a slice of a slice (qs[:50][:10]). - Nested loops inherit the outer queryset's eager loading and suggest the full relation path such as product__category (#168). - Agent skill 1.2.0: Playbook D says which release links inner loops to an outer prefetch, and keeps the manual checks for older releases. - Tests import unittest.mock directly (CodeQL py/import-and-import-from). Thanks for merging. Some context on how this PR happened: it came out of spare weekly AI-coding-subscription usage. I built Overflow (free, MIT, no money involved) so maintainers can price issues for people with spare usage to pick up, and credit for merged work pays for your own issues later: https://github.com/Nitjsefnie/Overflow. This and any future PRs don't depend on any of that, and nothing changes whether you look at it or not. If you'd like more people with spare usage picking up your issues, registering a public repo is one form. No reply needed, and I won't bring it up again. |
Summary
nplusonenow understands nested relation access: a loop inside another loop inherits the enclosing queryset's eager loading, so a fully prefetched inner loop is no longer flagged (#146), and a chain access likeitem.product.category.namesuggests the full validated path (select_related("product__category")) instead of only the first hop (#145, item 2). Inheritance follows the helper call's actual argument. Prefetch-cache coverage is now decided per documented queryset operation chained on the related manager: any operation that rebuilds the queryset (filter,exclude,order_by,values, a chainedprefetch_related(), and the rest Django documents) runs a new query per parent and keeps its finding;count/exists/containsstill read the prefetched cache; and an operation invalidates coverage only when its receiver resolves to the relation's manager in the schema, so scalar suffix calls likeitem.product.category.metadata.get('label')no longer erase loaded prefixes.Type of change

This round adds: helper-argument bindings (a helper called with a different receiver inherits nothing; non-Name, keyword-only and spread arguments inherit nothing), filtered reverse-manager chains (items.filter(...),items.all().filter(...)) staying uncovered, manager receivers behind an FK keeping their full relation path, and positional/later-call filter arguments keeping their accesses. This round adds: a property matrix classifying every documented Django 4.2/5.2 queryset operation (63 members, sync and async variants) as prefetch-cache-served or bypassing, per verified clone/cache behavior in Django's source; receiver-resolution controls keeping scalar/unknown-suffix and single-valued-receiver calls from invalidating loaded prefixes; and the nested-loop control now expecting both outer and inner findings when the inner chain re-declaresprefetch_related(), which clones and drops the cached results. The full suite runs in CI.Checklist
