Part of #1746 (slice A, step A1b). This PR does not finish the issue. It follows #1752.

What

  • The marker survives ramp edits. preserveRampProgress now keeps the bound_groups allocation mode across every ramp edit. Today, a PUT that changes the ramp shape before step 1 resets the mode to the default. On a bound plan that would drop the binding and let the plan buy by filter. Other modes, including equal_count, keep today's behaviour.
  • The service-settings PUT clears the plan-group fields. updateServiceConfig now clears group_id, bound_identities and max_step_commitment, next to the existing created_at/updated_at clearing. On a first save, mergeServiceConfig returns the whole decoded body, so a client could set these plan-only fields on a global service setting. Found by qa-ui-3 and as-qa-lead in the feat(config): add the bound_groups allocation mode and group fields #1752 reviews.

Why it is inert

Nothing writes bound_groups yet. Slice B's create will be the first writer.

Tests

  • New behaviour, failing on main first:
    • a ramp-shape PUT before step 1 keeps bound_groups;
    • a first-save service-settings PUT drops a client's group fields.
  • Guards:
    • a same-shape PUT keeps bound_groups;
    • a shape change still drops equal_count, as today.

Verification

  • go build ./..., go test ./internal/api ./internal/config ./internal/planstep (all green) and golangci-lint v2.10.1 on internal/api (0 issues), on macOS, rebased on current main (6ba8cc0).
  • pre-commit passes. cfn-lint was skipped because it can't install here; no CloudFormation files are touched.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Global service configurations no longer retain group assignments, bound identities, or maximum step commitment values submitted by clients; coverage settings are still saved.
    • Editing a plan’s ramp schedule now preserves its bound-group allocation setting, including when the schedule’s shape changes. For other plans, the allocation mode continues to reset when the schedule shape changes.

Slice A, step A1b of #1746.

- preserveRampProgress now carries the bound_groups allocation mode
across every ramp edit. A shape change before step 1 used to reset the
mode, and on a bound plan that would let it buy by filter. Other modes
  keep today's behaviour.
- The service-settings PUT now clears group_id, bound_identities and
max_step_commitment. On a first save it used to keep the whole decoded
body, so a client could set these plan-only fields on a global service
  setting (review finding on #1752).

pre-commit: cfn-lint skipped (it can't install here); no CloudFormation
files are touched.

Walkthrough

Service-config updates now clear plan-group fields before saving. Plan updates preserve the bound-groups allocation mode across ramp edits, including edits that change the ramp shape.

Explanation

The title "feat(api): keep the bound_groups marker across ramp edits" matches the main change. The PR makes preserveRampProgress retain RampAllocationBoundGroups across ramp edits, including shape changes, and adds tests for that behavior. The title leaves out the second change, which clears GroupID, BoundIdentities, and MaxStepCommitment on service-config saves. That omission is acceptable because the title need not cover every detail.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 4 files.

Cold review verdict: APPROVE at c2bcc14

Reviewer: claude-as-qa-lead. I didn't write this change.

No ramp-edit path can drop bound_groups

I traced every write of a plan's RampSchedule:

  • Plan update (PUT). mergeUpdatedPlan -> preserveRampProgress (handler_plans.go:432). The new carry runs first, before every branch: the same-shape copy, which also copies the stored mode; the shape change before step 1, the case this PR fixes; and the 409 refusal after step 1, which saves nothing.
  • disablePlan (handler_purchases.go:~918) reads the stored plan with GetPurchasePlan and flips only Enabled.
  • Creating planned purchases (handler_plans.go:~620) locks the stored plan (LockPurchasePlanTx). updatePlanNextExecutionDateTx (:855) changes only StartDate and NextExecutionDate on that struct.
  • Raw SQL. The step advance runs jsonb_set(ramp_schedule, '{current_step}', …) (store_postgres_plan_schedule_clock.go:21), so other keys, including allocation_mode, are kept. disableSoleAccountPlansTx sets only enabled. Plan create is toPurchasePlan, which can't express the mode at all.
  • The other RampSchedule = assignments (handler_accounts.go, override_transfer.go, resolver.go, the ladder store) are the service-level ramp string, not a plan's schedule.

Clearing the group fields on the service-settings PUT

  • The fields are cleared before the merge. updateServiceConfig clears GroupID, BoundIdentities and MaxStepCommitment on the decoded cfg, before the merge. So the new-row path (mergeServiceConfig returning cfg whole) stores them empty.
  • The existing-row path can't carry them either. It starts from the stored row, whose 14 named columns never held these fields, and the overlay keys don't include them.
  • Nothing else is returned. The handler responds with StatusResponse{"updated"}; the struct UpdateServiceConfigAtomic returns is discarded.
  • The new test covers the real hole. It captures the struct passed to SaveServiceConfig on the new-row path and asserts all three are empty while coverage still applies.

Tests fail on main

  • On main 6ba8cc0, with this head's two test files: TestUpdateServiceConfig_IgnoresClientGroupFields and TestUpdatePlan_KeepsBoundGroupsMarker fail.
  • At c2bcc14: go vet ./internal/api clean, and go test ./internal/api ./internal/config ./internal/planstep ok.
  • Probe. I deleted the new marker-carry line on a scratch copy and reverted afterwards. TestUpdatePlan_KeepsBoundGroupsMarker fails.

Assert the saved ramp schedule in the bound-marker test.

The test checks only the status code and AllocationMode. A change that saved the old schedule for a bound plan would still pass. Add assertions that saved.RampSchedule has the requested monthly-10pct type, PercentPerStep, StepIntervalDays, and TotalSteps, taken from config.PresetRampSchedules["monthly-10pct"].

Author verification at c2bcc14: go test -tags integration -count=1 (Postgres testcontainers) on macOS is green for internal/api (110.8s), internal/config (58.8s) and internal/planstep (9.5s).

@coderabbitai Thanks. The nitpick on handler_plans_bound_marker_test.go:33-36 (assert the saved ramp shape, not only AllocationMode) is valid. To keep the cold approval at c2bcc14, the fix lands in the next stacked slice-A PR (A1c), which will open once this one merges. The test there now checks the saved Type, PercentPerStep, StepIntervalDays and TotalSteps against PresetRampSchedules for each case. This PR's behaviour is unchanged.

@cristim Understood. Deferring this test improvement to A1c is reasonable. Checking all four saved ramp-shape fields against PresetRampSchedules addresses the nitpick. The follow-up remains pending for this PR.

Would you like a GitHub issue to track it until A1c opens?

Addendum to my APPROVE at c2bcc14: integration suites (go test -count=1 -tags integration, Postgres testcontainers) at this head, for every Go package this PR and its base #1752 touch, plus the packages from #1742/#1745 on the same main: internal/config ok (53s), internal/planstep ok, internal/purchase ok (39s), internal/api ok (122s).

Cold review: claude-qa-ui-3, verdict APPROVE at c2bcc14

I didn't author this PR. Scope: #1746 slice A1b, still inert.

No ramp edit path can drop the bound_groups marker

Every write of a plan's RampSchedule was checked:

  • Update API. updatePlan, then mergeUpdatedPlan, then preserveRampProgress (handler_plans.go:432,472). The request is rebuilt by toPurchasePlan (types.go:893), which never sets an allocation mode. The new guard copies bound_groups from the stored plan before the shape check, so it survives both the unchanged-shape branch (which already copied the mode) and the changed-shape branch (the one this PR fixes).
  • Create API (handler_plans.go:197). A new plan has no stored marker, so nothing can be lost.
  • disablePlan (handler_purchases.go:918-934) loads the plan and flips Enabled in place, so the mode is kept.
  • Store. Create and update write the whole RampSchedule JSON from the struct (store_postgres.go:536,900). The scheduler's step advance is jsonb_set(ramp_schedule, '{current_step}', …) (store_postgres_plan_schedule_clock.go:21), which keeps every other key, allocation_mode included.
  • Account overrides and override import carry RampSchedule as a preset string, not the plan struct (handler_accounts.go:1259, override_transfer.go:109,116).

Clearing covers the stored and returned structs

updateServiceConfig clears GroupID, BoundIdentities and MaxStepCommitment on the decoded cfg before mergeServiceConfig:

  • On the new-row path (existing == nil), that cleared cfg is exactly what's stored.
  • On the existing-row path, the overlay only copies allowlisted keys, so the request can't set them.
  • The PUT returns only {status: updated}. The GET reads back the stored row.

Residual (non-blocking): a row created through the new-row path between #1752's deploy and this one would keep any group fields it got. Nothing reads them, and clearing merged too would close that window.

Tests fail on main

With main's handler_plans.go and handler_config.go, TestUpdatePlan_KeepsBoundGroupsMarker and TestUpdateServiceConfig_IgnoresClientGroupFields both fail. Both pass at the head. The marker test failing on main shows it exercises the changed-shape branch, since the unchanged branch already preserved the mode.

Local verification (macOS)

  • go test ./internal/api ok.
  • go test -tags integration ./internal/api -count=1 (Postgres via testcontainers, full package) ok, 151s.

Not merged.

Slice A, step A1c of #1746.

- Precheck refuses a plan where an enabled entry is bound (a "#" key, or
any entry of a bound_groups plan) but has no bound identities. The new
ErrBoundPlanMissingBinding wraps ErrUnsupportedPlan, so attach writes a
failed step instead of buying by filter or retrying silently.
- Writes that arm or widen auto-purchase run the same check and answer
  409. Disarming, disabling and renaming never reach that gate, so an
operator can still stop a stripped plan.
- min_count 1 on a "#"-keyed entry is the rollback sentinel (older
binaries refuse any min_count), so Precheck no longer treats it as a
filter there. Any other filter, and min_count on a legacy key, is still
  refused.
- The #1756 bound-marker test now also checks that the requested ramp
shape is the one saved (CodeRabbit nitpick on #1756).

pre-commit: cfn-lint skipped (it can't install here); no CloudFormation
files are touched.
