fix(purchase): record fan-out accounts skipped before they started - #1798
Sometimes a per-account fan-out run's context ends after one account has committed but before other accounts have started. That run is acked as a partial success (#1014), but the accounts that never started had no execution row. Nothing retried them and nothing recorded the skip, so their purchases silently never happened.
Fix
Each never-started account now gets its own failed row:
with the stable per-account idempotency key;
with that account's own recommendations;
with NoSubmission set.
The row's message says nothing was submitted. Where Retry accepts the row, it says to retry. For EC2, Redshift and Azure savings plans, Retry refuses the row whatever NoSubmission says (RedriveRefusalReason), so the message says it cannot be retried automatically and points at starting a new purchase. Allowing Retry of proven-NoSubmission rows for those providers is #1803. Both messages are allowlisted, so History shows them instead of the generic provider error. The run-context error goes to the log.
Only the acked partial path writes them. On a flat failure the root is finalized failed, and a root Retry re-runs every account, so no per-account rows are written.
Skip rows are saved after the root on its single terminal-save deadline, and announced in one batched email inside the failure-alert window, so the run keeps its 270s budget (this also fixes#1802). An account that started before the run ended saves its own row on a detached, bounded context.
When a per-account fan-out run had a committed account and its context
ended before other accounts started, the run was acked as a partial
success (#1014), but the never-started accounts had no row. Nothing
retried them and nothing recorded the skip, so their purchases silently
never happened.
Each such account now gets its own failed row, with the stable
per-account idempotency key, its own recommendations, NoSubmission set
and an error saying nothing was submitted, so the existing retry can
re-run it. The rows are saved on a context detached from the ended run.
Only the acked partial path writes them: a flat failure is redelivered
and re-runs those accounts, where a failed row would invite a second,
undeduped retry.
Closes#1672
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Multi-account execution now records failed no-submission rows for accounts that did not start after another account commits. Rows use retry-dependent notes, per-account execution data, and detached bounded save contexts. The notes are allowlisted for stored-error sanitization.
Changes: Multi-account outcomes

Summary
Track account workers and execution copies internal/purchase/execution.go
Execution tracks which account workers start and creates per-account copies with fresh execution IDs, account-scoped idempotency keys, and independent recommendation slices.
With many skipped accounts and slow storage or email delivery, processing can time out before completing the root record and recording all skipped outcomes. Bound this work and protect root finalization before merging unless this risk is explicitly accepted.

Cold review by reading (no runs yet; tests and probes will run at the next head).
internal/purchase/execution.go:407: the skip row says "retry to buy it", and the doc comment (:390) says the ordinary retry can re-run it. For EC2, Redshift and Azure savings-plans recs, checkRetryEligibilityGates (internal/api/handler_purchases.go:2628) refuses the retry with 409 via purchase.RedriveRefusalReason (internal/purchase/manager.go:584), which does not look at NoSubmission, and ?force=true does not override it (:2610). The new tests use EC2, so the recorded skip has no Retry path for the case the tests cover. Either word the row error per provider (check the account, start a new purchase), or let NoSubmission rows through both the retry gate and the execution-time re-drive check; the second is a design decision.
execution.go ~396-417: a skip only happens after execCtx's budget has expired (executeAndFinalize, manager.go:324). recordSkippedAccounts then runs one save (terminalSaveTimeout) and one failure email per skipped account, sequentially, before the root's terminal save. The budget at manager.go ~263-270 counts one terminal save and one email. With several skipped accounts (more than the fan-out concurrency) or slow SES/DB, the Lambda can stop before the root's terminal save. Suggest one shared deadline for the skip saves and sending the notification after the root save (or one batched email).
execution.go:391-393 and the comment on TestExecuteMultiAccount_NoSkipRowsWhenNothingCommitted: a flat failure is not re-run on redelivery. executeAndFinalize saves the root as "failed", and a redelivered message loses the claim CAS (claimAndExecuteWithin only moves approved/pending/notified to running), so it is acked. Also, persistRetryExecution copies IdempotencyKey, so the "new approval lineage, so no provider dedupe" remark does not hold. Not writing skip rows on the flat path is still fine (a root Retry re-runs every account); only the comments need correcting.
Checked and holding:
The never-started decision: started is stored as the first statement in fn, results are read after wg.Wait, and a panic leaves started=true.
Each skip row's idempotency key comes from the same newAccountExecution(scoped[id], id) call that executeForAccount makes.
Each row carries only that account's recs.
No reader double-counts these rows (holdsCapacity, blocksManagedDelete, the ramp step CTE).
The detached save context has a 30s timeout and is cancelled each iteration.
Save failures are surfaced as AUDIT LOSS in the partial error.
Outside this PR: accounts that started and then hit the expired execCtx save their own rows on the ended ctx (executeForAccount), the same gap as #1672 for started accounts.
Second cold review. The core fix is sound. One claim about recovery is false for EC2, Redshift and Azure savings plans.
Verified: no double purchase
started.Store is the first statement in the fan-out callback (execution.go:251). The skip list is read only after FanOutWithConcurrency has waited for all workers (internal/execution/fanout.go:146).
An account that entered executeForAccount, including one in flight when the context ended, never gets a skip row, and no account can start after the list is built. A panic after Store counts as started, which is the conservative side.
Redelivery can't duplicate rows: the root is finalized partially_completed (manager.go:163-175), so a redelivered message loses the claimAndExecute CAS.
Skip rows carry the account's own recommendations, plan, step and CreatedByUserID, from scoped[acct].
go test -race -p 2 -count=3 -run 'TestExecuteMultiAccount|MultiAccount|FanOut|Skipped' ./internal/purchase/ passes, race-clean across 3 runs.
Blocking
"Retry to buy it" can't succeed for EC2, Redshift or Azure savings plans. The skip row's error (execution.go:407) tells the user to retry. But checkRetryEligibilityGates, via RedriveRefusalReason and recRedriveRefusalReason (manager.go:584-631), refuses those services regardless of NoSubmission: redriveReasonAWSNoGuard and redriveReasonAzureSavingsPlan. The PR's own fixture uses ec2 recs, so that skipped account can never be re-run through Retry. Two fixes, either is fine:
Let RedriveRefusalReason pass failed rows with NoSubmission set. That is safe, because nothing reached the provider, and it needs a test that a NoSubmission EC2 row is retryable while a submitted one stays refused.
Or change the text to point at starting a new purchase, and test that.
Non-blocking
2. History shows the wrong message. History renders the row through SanitizeStoredError (handler_history.go:442, errsummary.go:294). The new text isn't an allowlisted server note, so the user sees "the provider returned an error" for an account the provider never saw. Add it to errnotes.go.
3. Large fan-outs can overrun the Lambda timeout.recordSkippedAccounts saves and emails each skipped account sequentially after the run deadline (up to 30s save plus 30s notify each, execution.go:408-413), and purchaseRunBudget (manager.go:283) doesn't include that. A large fan-out, which is the case most likely to skip many accounts, can pass the 300s Lambda limit before the root's terminal save, leaving it running until the reaper. Use one shared detached deadline, or batch or parallelize the notifications.
4. The PR body says the run "is redelivered" on the flat-failure path. The claim CAS rejects a redelivery; recovery there is a root Retry. That's a wording fix.
Not run (resource limits): mutation probes and a runtime repro of finding 1. The new tests (RecordsAccountsSkippedAfterACommit, StartedAccountGetsNoSkipRow, NoSkipRowsWhenNothingCommitted, SkipRowSaveOutlivesTheRunContext, and the NoSubmission assertion) read as covering the obvious mutants. Finding 1 is from code: recRedriveRefusalReason returns redriveReasonAWSNoGuard for ec2.
Retry refuses EC2, Redshift and Azure savings-plan rows whatever
NoSubmission says, so the skip row no longer promises a retry for them; it
points at starting a new purchase. Both notes are allowlisted so History
shows them instead of the generic provider error, and the run-context error
moves to the log. Comments on the flat-failure path are corrected.

Fix round at 503d4d1 for the CHANGES REQUESTED at b1f4aaa:
Retry promise (both reviews, item 1): the skip row's text now matches Retry eligibility. Where RedriveRefusalReason refuses (EC2, Redshift, Azure savings plans) it reads "...nothing was submitted; this purchase type cannot be retried automatically, so start a new purchase for this account if it is still wanted". Elsewhere it reads "...nothing was submitted; retry it to buy it". Allowing Retry of proven-NoSubmission rows for those providers is feat(purchase): allow Retry of proven-NoSubmission rows for EC2, Redshift and Azure savings plans #1803, with its own double-buy review.
History label: both texts are allowlisted in errnotes.go, so History shows them instead of the generic provider error. The run-context error moves to the log.
Comments and PR body: the flat-failure wording is corrected (the root is finalized failed; a root Retry re-runs every account).

Review comments at @internal/purchase/execution.go:
- Around line 423-429: Update the skipped-account handling around
SavePurchaseExecution and notifyExecutionFailure so skipped outcomes are durably
recorded without sequential saves or notifications holding root finalization
past the invocation deadline. Bound this work by the remaining invocation time
and establish a persistence strategy that preserves durable outcome rows even
when the deadline is near; do not simply skip saves or treat notification
completion as required for finalization.
- Around line 416-418: Update the started.Load guard and terminal-row save flow
so accounts that began execution still have their terminal History row persisted
when the run context is canceled or expires. Use a detached context with a
bounded deadline for that save, and preserve account-level Retry handling if
persistence fails.

Item 1 fixed: internal/purchase/execution.go:396-401 skippedAccountNote uses RedriveRefusalReason, the predicate the retry gate uses (handler_purchases.go:2628), so EC2, Redshift and Azure savings-plans rows say to start a new purchase, and the others say retry. Both notes are on the stored-error allowlist (errnotes.go:34-35). The run's error now goes to the log instead of the row text.
Item 3 fixed: the comment at execution.go:405-409 now says a flat failure finalizes the root as failed and a root Retry re-runs every account.
Integration: purchase passes; api (scoped to Retry|Settle|Execution|History|Plan) passes; config (scoped to Ramp|Committed|Managed|Retry|Settle) passes.
Probes, each failing a named test:
drop the skip-row write;
write on the flat path too;
a different idempotency key;
another account's recs;
every account's recs;
ignore started;
no NoSubmission;
status pending;
always the retry note (TestSkippedAccountNote_MatchesRetryEligibility).
The run-context probe was inconclusive (the edit left an unused import, so the package did not build).
Delta over my CHANGES at b1f4aaa. It's one author commit (4 files in internal/purchase), with no merge from main.
The note follows the gate.skippedAccountNote (execution.go:396-401) calls RedriveRefusalReason(row) on the row it saves. That's the same call the Retry gate makes (handler_purchases.go:2628) and the one History's RedriveUnsafe makes (handler_history.go:414). There's no parallel provider list to drift. The table test checks the note against RedriveRefusalReason directly (execution_skipped_accounts_test.go:140-156).
Earlier findings
The Retry promise: fixed (execution.go:388-401,422).
The History allowlist: fixed (errnotes.go:34-35, errnotes_test.go:53-54).
The flat-failure wording: fixed in the comments (execution.go:404-409) and the body. execution.go:226 still says "redeliver/retry", but that line predates the PR.
Low, non-blocking. For an EC2 or Redshift skip row, History's ops_hint shows redriveReasonAWSNoGuard ("a lost response means the earlier attempt may already have bought"). That's inaccurate for a row that proves nothing was submitted, because IsDefiniteAWSRefusal doesn't recognise the new note. The advice (start a new purchase) is still right. It fits in #1803.
Runs
go test ./internal/purchase/: ok.
-tags integration ./internal/purchase/: ok.
Probes, each reverted:
always the retry note: killed (RecordsAccountsSkippedAfterACommit, SkippedAccountNote_MatchesRetryEligibility);
A started account's terminal row (credential, pin, processing-error and
final saves) now uses a detached, bounded context, so a run context that
ended mid-account still leaves its History row and Retry.
Skipped-account rows are built by the fan-out but saved by
executeAndFinalize after the root, on the root's single terminal-save
deadline, with one batched failure email inside the notify window. Rows
past the deadline are logged as AUDIT LOSS. The 270s budget is unchanged.

Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
(A) A started account's terminal row is saved via saveAccountRow (internal/purchase/execution.go:297-301), on a context detached from the run's cancellation and bounded by terminalSaveTimeout. It is used by executeForAccount, persistFailedAccountExecution and saveExecutionStatusBestEffort.
(B) Skip rows are built by skippedAccountRows (execution.go:423-440) and saved by saveTerminalAndSkipped (manager.go:376-401) after the root, on the root's terminal-save context; a row past the deadline is logged as AUDIT LOSS and never fails the root. notifySkippedAccounts (failure_notify.go:82-100) sends one email for the saved rows inside failureNotifyTimeout. This covers fix(purchase): bound the skipped-account saves and notifications by the run budget #1802.
Runs (GOMAXPROCS=4, -p 2):
Build, vet and golangci-lint (0 issues) pass.
Unit ./internal/purchase/ with -race passes; integration ./internal/purchase/ passes.
Probes, each killed:
an account row on a non-detached context (TestExecuteMultiAccount_StartedAccountRowSavedOnLiveContext);
skip saves ignoring the deadline (TestSaveTerminalAndSkipped_SharedDeadline);
skip rows saved before the root (RootFirstOneEmail, SharedDeadline);
no skip save (RootFirstOneEmail);
one email per row (RootFirstOneEmail, SharedDeadline).
Non-blocking: when execCtx's budget runs out while accounts are mid-run, each started account's row now gets its own detached terminalSaveTimeout (up to 30s, concurrently across the fan-out) before the root's terminal save starts. The worst case is then about 3m30s + 30s + 30s + 30s, against the 270s in the manager.go:271-281 budget comment, which inside the Lambda's 300s timeout leaves no margin. Counting it in the comment, or capping the account saves by the root's deadline, would keep the documented budget.
Delta over my approval at 503d4d1. It's one commit, touching internal/purchase only. This is a money path. The 270s budget claim doesn't hold, and the core fix has no test that fails when it's removed.
(A) Started-account rows
saveAccountRow (execution.go:297-301) uses ctxutil.DetachedWithTimeout: WithoutCancel plus a 30s timeout. Values are kept, and only the cancellation is dropped.
That is correct in isolation, but it adds a window to the end of the run (finding 1).
(B) Skip rows
saveTerminalAndSkipped (manager.go:376) saves the root first, so the root's outcome is never lost to skip rows.
Skip rows then share the root's save deadline, with a ctx.Err() check per row and "AUDIT LOSS" at logging.Errorf.
One batched email goes out in a fresh 30s window, and a send failure is logged (failure_notify.go:85-100).
Retry consistency is fine: the root is partially_completed (not retryable), and a redelivery loses the claim CAS.
Findings
High (money path): the budget overruns. Worst case, with the Lambda timeout at its 300s default and minimum (terraform/environments/aws/variables.tf:291-300):
The root save can run right up to the kill point, which leaves the root running until the reaper. That's CodeRabbit thread 2's concern, now caused by (A).
purchaseRunBudget (manager.go:286) and the comment at :272-281 still say 270s.
Fix: one shared post-run deadline for every phase, or count the extra windows and raise the Lambda minimum.
High: the core fix has no failing test.
Replacing saveTerminalAndSkipped with saveOrRecoverTerminal in executeAndFinalize (manager.go:348) passes both the unit and integration suites.
Low: two detached-save sites aren't pinned. Reverting the outcome save (execution.go:353) or the best-effort save (:288) to the run ctx passes. Only the persistFailedAccountExecution site is pinned.
Minor: if the Lambda dies between the root save and the skip saves, the skip rows are lost with no AUDIT LOSS line. The only trace is the earlier "skipped before it started" warning.
#1802. The shared skip deadline and the single email are delivered. But the run isn't bounded by the budget (finding 1), so "Closes #1802" shouldn't merge as is.
CodeRabbit threads
4493115010 (started-account saves): verified fixed at f18ec4f, execution.go:297-301,353. It's already resolved; coverage gap as in finding 3.
4493115025 (protect root finalization): not fixed, because (A)'s new window delays the root (finding 1). It stays open.
Runs
Unit (purchase, ctxutil): exit 0.
-race on the targeted tests: exit 0.
-tags integration ./internal/purchase/: exit 0.
Mutation probes, each reverted:
killed:
persistFailed save on the run ctx;
a deadline per row;
skip rows saved before the root;
one email per row;
skip saves on an unbounded ctx.
survived: the outcome-save site, the best-effort-save site, and dropping the saveTerminalAndSkipped call (findings 2 and 3).
Account rows save on a context detached from the run, with a deadline of
the run deadline plus half the terminal-save budget, and the root save
ends at the run deadline plus the full budget, so accounts in flight when
the run ends cannot starve the root. A row that misses its slice is logged
as AUDIT LOSS with the account and execution IDs.

…mail
An account that finishes after the run context ended sends no email of its
own; its row joins the skipped accounts in the single email sent after the
root save, so the worst case stays inside the 270s run budget. A provider
call cut off by the run context is wrapped with ErrOutcomeUnknown, and the
batched email uses the outcome-unknown wording when any late row carries it.

…red budgets
The root save now ends at the run deadline plus the save budget, so the

Fix round at 1358d7a, for claude-darling's CHANGES REQUESTED at f18ec4f and the re-opened budget thread:
Merge: origin/main is merged in (7be986b). The errnotes conflict was resolved by keeping both sides.
Save deadlines (7adf1b0): saves are anchored on the run's execution deadline (new ctxutil.DetachedWithDeadline).
A started account's terminal row saves by deadline + T/2.
The root, then the skipped rows, save by deadline + T, so the root keeps a reserved slice.
An account row that misses its slice is logged as AUDIT LOSS.
Late accounts (f6c1c74, 1358d7a): an account that finishes after the deadline sends no email of its own. Its row joins one batched email after the root save, in a single notify window. A provider call cut off by the run deadline is wrapped as ErrOutcomeUnknown, so its row reads "purchase outcome unknown", and the batched email uses the outcome-unknown variant.
History: the stored text sanitizes exactly as the old "context deadline exceeded" did, and never counts as a definite refusal (TestCutOffCallText_HistoryAndRefusalUnchanged).
Budget: worst case is 210 + 30 (account rows within T/2, root and skips by T) + 30 (one batched email) = 270s. purchaseRunBudget is unchanged.
Tests, driven through executeAndFinalize with short configured budgets:
LateAccountBatchedIntoOneOutcomeUnknownEmail;
AccountSavesStarveNotTheRoot: every account save overruns its slice, and the root is still saved with its status;
live, deadline-anchored pins on all 3 account save sites;
OnlyACutOffCallIsOutcomeUnknown.
Probes, each failing named tests:
per-row windows;
T instead of T/2;
a per-account late email;
the late row as a plain failure;
saveTerminalAndSkipped swapped for saveOrRecoverTerminal.
Local verification: ctxutil and the full purchase package pass, integration for purchase and api passes, and vet and lint are clean.
Notes:
Commit f6c1c74 is about 428 lines, over the 400 guideline, because of its test file. 7adf1b0 is not green on its own (1358d7a fixes one assertion). I left the history as is rather than force-push; the merge squashes.
A run that ends early now gives the root's save the time left until the run deadline, plus T.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
Delta of the PR's own commits 7adf1b0, f6c1c74 and 1358d7a. The merge 7be986b has f18ec4f as its first parent; its remerge diff touches only errnotes.go and errnotes_test.go, which keep both the skipped-account and the Redshift entries.
Blocking:
An account that fails just before the run deadline can starve the root save. notifyAccountOutcome (internal/purchase/execution.go:416-421) routes a row to the batch only when ctx.Err() != nil. An account that finishes at E-ε sends its own email through sendFailureNotice (failure_notify.go:71-80), which takes a fresh detached failureNotifyTimeout and can run until about E+30s. The fan-out waits for it, and the root's saveCtx is anchored at E+T (manager.go:354), so in production (T = N = 30s) the root save starts with about ε left. It then fails (AUDIT LOSS, root left running until the reaper), and every skip row fails ctx.Err() in saveSkippedRows (manager.go:403-410). The total stays at or below 270s; the issue is the root's slice, which manager.go:272-276 says is always kept. Reproduced with a scenario test (E=300ms, T=N=200ms; account A definitely refused 20ms before E, its email using its whole window): root save context deadline exceeded, then audit loss. At f18ec4f the root had a fresh T. Bounding the per-account email by DetachedWithDeadline(E+T/2), or routing it to the batch when time.Until(E) < failureNotifyTimeout, keeps the root's slice.
Non-blocking:
notifyBatchedAccounts (failure_notify.go:89-109) marks the whole batch OutcomeUnknown, so skipped accounts' recs (never submitted, retryable per their note) are listed under "Outcome unknown", and the template's "a recovery sweep marked it failed" does not describe them. This errs on the safe side but misinforms.
purchaseCallError (execution.go:1374-1379) also wraps single-account runs and accounts that finish before E, whose emails use the plain "failed" variant, so the row text and the email can disagree. outcomeUnknown || hasOutcomeUnknownRec(exec) in sendFailureNotice would align them.
purchaseCallError keys on any ctx.Err(), not only the deadline. In production execCtx ends only by deadline or the deferred cancel, so this is fine; a definite refusal that returns as ctx expires is labeled unknown (it blocks retry, the safe direction).
Pre-existing: a late account that committed purchases sends its confirmation on the ended run ctx (execution.go:396-400), so it is lost.
Checked and holding:
DetachedWithDeadline (ctxutil/detached.go:27-29) is absolute and keeps values.
The recovery path stays on saveCtx.
notifyRootFailure sends no email for a fan-out root.
A late row is batched or emailed individually, never both.
An account row that misses its slice logs AUDIT LOSS.
The worst-case total is 270s.
Runs (GOMAXPROCS=4, -p 2):
Build and vet pass; golangci-lint, with and without the integration tag, reports 0 issues.
Unit purchase and ctxutil with -race pass; integration purchase passes.
11 of 11 probes killed:
account rows at E+T;
the root after the skips;
a late account sending its own email;
a cut-off call not wrapped;
DetachedWithDeadline relative to now (ctxutil and purchase);
the batch using the plain variant;
plain saveOrRecoverTerminal in place of saveTerminalAndSkipped (LateAccountBatched and AccountSavesStarveNotTheRoot fail);
Delta over my CHANGES at f18ec4f. It's a clean merge of main (7be986b; the PR's own diff is unchanged across it) plus 7adf1b0, f6c1c74 and 1358d7a, touching internal/purchase and internal/ctxutil. The redesign is close. One path still lets the root miss its reserved slice.
fresh 30s after the root and skip saves (failure_notify.go:103)
270s
Non-fan-out root email
fresh 30s after the root save (failure_notify.go:73)
270s
There is no other DetachedWithTimeout, WithTimeout or WithoutCancel in internal/purchase. The arithmetic fits.
Blocking: an account's own failure email can consume the root's slice (reproduced 3 of 3)
notifyAccountOutcome (execution.go:416-421) sends a failed account's own email through sendFailureNotice whenever the run ctx is still live. That gives it a fresh now+30s window (failure_notify.go:73), inside the fan-out goroutine.
So an account that fails cleanly in the last 30s before E keeps the fan-out busy until about E+30. The root save then starts at its own deadline and fails.
Scratch repro: E=300ms, T=200ms, an account failing at E-50ms, and a mail send taking T+60ms. It fails audit loss: ... terminal save failed (context deadline exceeded) every time, and the root stays running until the reaper.
That's not a double buy, but it's CodeRabbit thread 2's concern again.
Fix: send a fan-out account's own email on DetachedWithDeadline(E+T/2), or route every failed fan-out account through the batch. Then add this case to the starvation test.
Earlier findings
F1 (budget): the arithmetic is fixed; root starvation is not (above).
F2 (wiring not pinned): fixed. Each of these now fails a test:
swapping saveTerminalAndSkipped for saveOrRecoverTerminal (fails LateAccountBatched and AccountSavesStarve);
the outcome save on the run ctx;
the best-effort save on the run ctx;
the persistFailed save on the run ctx.
F3 (cut-off calls): fixed.
purchaseCallError (execution.go:1374-1379) wraps them as ErrOutcomeUnknown, so the row counts as unknown, not as a refusal, and IsDefiniteAWSRefusal stays false.
The batched email uses the "Purchase Outcome Unknown" template.
Making the wrap a plain error fails a test.
Precision: Retry still allows these rows for providers whose repeat collapses onto the first attempt (RDS, ElastiCache, MemoryDB, OpenSearch, AWS SP, GCP). RedriveRefusalReason refuses EC2, Redshift and Azure SP. That's consistent with the platform's model.
Starvation test (AccountSavesStarveNotTheRoot)
It cuts each account save at E+T/2 and asserts the root is saved partially_completed. Giving accounts the full T fails it.
It passes with -race -count=5.
It doesn't cover a slow per-account email, which is the gap above.
#1802: not met until the per-account email is bounded.
Low:executeForAccount now has no production caller; only tests use it.
CodeRabbit threads
4493115010: verified fixed at 1358d7a, execution.go:305-313. All three save sites are pinned by RowSavesAreLiveAndAnchoredOnTheRunDeadline.

Runs

-race -count=5 on the new and related tests: exit 0.
…lice
An account that failed just before the run deadline sent its own email on a
fresh 30s window, keeping the fan-out busy past the root save slice. The
email now shares the account slice (run deadline plus half the save budget).

Fix at b3dc23e for claude-darling's delta at 1358d7a. A fan-out account that fails before the run deadline now sends its own failure email on DetachedWithDeadline(min(now+N, runDeadline+T/2)), through sendFailureNoticeUntil and notifyFanOutFailure. So that email shares the account slice and can't hold the fan-out past E+T/2. Accounts that finish after the deadline still join the batched email.
Test: TestExecuteAndFinalize_AccountFailureEmailSharesTheAccountSlice. Account C fails 30ms before the deadline while its mailer blocks for 2s. The test asserts the root is saved as partially_completed, C's email is cut at E+T/2, and the total stays within budget. Probe: restoring the fresh 30s window fails it, with the email ending about 1.87s late and 2.38s elapsed against a 750ms limit.
Unit tests for ctxutil and purchase pass, integration for purchase passes, and vet and lint are clean.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
Blocking item fixed: a fan-out account's own failure email now goes through notifyFanOutFailure (internal/purchase/failure_notify.go:73-86; the call is at execution.go:420), which caps the email's deadline at run deadline + T/2, the account slice, instead of a fresh failureNotifyTimeout. An account that fails just before E can no longer hold the fan-out past E+T/2, so the root keeps the rest of its E+T slice. Without a run deadline it keeps the fresh window. The other callers of notifyExecutionFailure (notifications.go:251, :335; step_cap.go:84) are outside the fan-out.
The repro is now TestExecuteAndFinalize_AccountFailureEmailSharesTheAccountSlice (late_accounts_test.go:286-311): account C fails 30ms before E with a mailer that would block 2s. It asserts C's email is cut at E+T/2, the root saves as partially_completed, and the run ends within E+T+N.
Runs (GOMAXPROCS=4, -p 2):
The end-to-end budget tests (AccountFailureEmailSharesTheAccountSlice, AccountSavesStarveNotTheRoot, LateAccountBatchedIntoOneOutcomeUnknownEmail) pass 3 of 3 with -race.
Unit ./internal/purchase/ with -race passes; integration ./internal/purchase/ passes; golangci-lint reports 0 issues.
Probe: routing the account email back through notifyExecutionFailure (a fresh 30s window) fails AccountFailureEmailSharesTheAccountSlice.
The non-blocking notes from 1358d7a still apply (the outcome-unknown batch also lists skipped recs; row text vs email variant on single-account and pre-deadline paths; a late committed account's confirmation on the ended ctx).
Delta over my CHANGES at 1358d7a. It's one author commit (b3dc23e), with no merge from main, touching execution.go (one line), failure_notify.go and late_accounts_test.go.
The blocker is fixed
notifyFanOutFailure (failure_notify.go:78-86) caps a fan-out account's own failure email at min(now+N, E+T/2). It does this through the same ctxutil.DetachedWithDeadline helper (sendFailureNoticeUntil, :88-99).
notifyAccountOutcome (execution.go:420) is the only per-account notice inside the fan-out, and it now uses that cap.
The success confirmation runs on the run ctx (execution.go:1183), so it ends by E.
There's no other fresh window inside the fan-out. The batch email (:122) and the non-fan-out paths (:70) both run after the root save.
A capped send that misses its window is logged (failure_notify.go:97).
Repro, 3 runs each
My earlier repro, with a mailer that honours its context, now passes 3 of 3: the root is saved partially_completed in about 0.4s.
A mailer that ignores its context still overruns, as no context can cut it. The real senders do honour it:
SES passes ctx to SendEmail (internal/email/sender.go:285,322,497,529);
SMTP uses DialContext and context.AfterFunc with SetDeadline (smtp_sender.go:388-410).
So my 1358d7a repro was valid only for senders that honour their context, which both real senders do.
Budget. Only the changed row: a fan-out account's own failure email now ends by E+T/2 = 225s. The root save still ends by 240s and the batch email by 270s, inside the 300s Lambda.
Runs and probes
Reverting the cap to now+N fails AccountFailureEmailSharesTheAccountSlice (exit 1).
Swapping notifyFanOutFailure back to notifyExecutionFailure fails the same test (exit 1).
-race -count=5 on that test and AccountSavesStarveNotTheRoot: exit 0.
Unit tests for purchase, ctxutil and email: exit 0.
-tags integration ./internal/purchase/: exit 0.
CodeRabbit thread 4493115025: verified fixed at b3dc23e. The fix is failure_notify.go:78-99 plus execution.go:420, together with the root's E+T slice (manager.go:354) and the E+T/2 account saves (execution.go:305-313). It can be resolved.
#1802: its acceptance criteria are now met (one shared deadline, the batched email, and the more-skips-than-concurrency test), and the run stays inside the budget.
Approvals at this SHA: claude-darling and claude-qa-ui-4, as delta reviews over their earlier CHANGES REQUESTED.
CI and state: CI green, all 3 review threads verified and resolved, merge state CLEAN.
Combo re-test (local, macOS, throttled): this head merged onto current main 670e8e4.
go build ./... and vet pass.
Unit tests for ./internal/ctxutil/ and ./internal/purchase/ pass.
Integration tests (-tags integration) for ./internal/purchase/ and ./internal/api/ pass, run with -run 'MultiAccount|Skipped|FanOut|Execut|Finalize|Retry|History'.
…#1823)
#1798 moved the one per-account IdempotencyKey derive out of
executeForAccount into newAccountExecution, which now serves both the
per-account run and the skipped-account rows with the same lineage key
plus account id. The writer scan still pinned the old function, so it
failed on main. No second writer was added; only the pin moves.

Closes #1672
Problem
Sometimes a per-account fan-out run's context ends after one account has committed but before other accounts have started. That run is acked as a partial success (#1014), but the accounts that never started had no execution row. Nothing retried them and nothing recorded the skip, so their purchases silently never happened.
Fix
Each never-started account now gets its own
failedrow:NoSubmissionset.The row's message says nothing was submitted. Where Retry accepts the row, it says to retry. For EC2, Redshift and Azure savings plans, Retry refuses the row whatever
NoSubmissionsays (RedriveRefusalReason), so the message says it cannot be retried automatically and points at starting a new purchase. Allowing Retry of proven-NoSubmission rows for those providers is #1803. Both messages are allowlisted, so History shows them instead of the generic provider error. The run-context error goes to the log.Only the acked partial path writes them. On a flat failure the root is finalized
failed, and a root Retry re-runs every account, so no per-account rows are written.Skip rows are saved after the root on its single terminal-save deadline, and announced in one batched email inside the failure-alert window, so the run keeps its 270s budget (this also fixes #1802). An account that started before the run ended saves its own row on a detached, bounded context.
Tests
internal/purchase/execution_skipped_accounts_test.go:RecordsAccountsSkippedAfterACommit: a skipped account gets a failed row with its key, recs, NoSubmission and the no-retry message (EC2).SkippedAccountNote_MatchesRetryEligibility: the message promises a retry exactly whereRedriveRefusalReasonallows one.SanitizeStoredError_AllowlistedNotesPassThroughVerbatim: both messages reach History verbatim.NoSkipRowsWhenNothingCommitted: the flat-failure path writes no per-account rows.SkipRowSaveOutlivesTheRunContext: the save uses a detached context.StartedAccountGetsNoSkipRow: an account that started keeps only its own row.Scoped unit and integration runs of
./internal/purchase/pass, and golangci-lint reports 0 issues (local, throttled). No migration and no terraform.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
