perf: menu holders without block copies, reused faction list rows, settlement syncs together - #220
A single 2.0 s tick at 04:01 was InventoryManager.clickButton → CraftInventory.getHolder(), which copies the whole block state for a block inventory. Over 20 h: clickButton 29 s, InventoryUpdater.updateInventory 21 s (up to 7 getHolder() calls per player per pass), isPluginMenu 4.3 s, BattleInventoryManager.handlePageClick 3.4 s.
The once-a-second menu refresh rebuilt every faction-list row for every viewer (FactionView.populateFactionList → FactionCreator.createListItem), ~10 s/h at peak.
Holders (8834dd3): every getHolder() → getHolder(false) (all calls only check or cast to SF's own holders); clickButton and InventoryUpdater read it once.
Faction list (838b8b8): the periodic refresh reuses a row built for the same viewer, character and faction within 5 s. Opening, paging and changing the ranking always build fresh rows; row order is still worked out every pass; a viewer's rows are dropped on quit. Visible difference: an open list can show a faction change up to 5 s late instead of 1 s.
Settlement (c36b57b): a DurableJson.Batch now syncs up to 8 temp files at once on short-lived daemon threads (syncs running together share the filesystem's journal commits), waits for all, then renames and syncs each directory once. Every content is synced before its rename and every rename before commit() returns, so the journal order and crash recovery are unchanged. Files are now replaced in commit() instead of write(); both callers commit right after their save loop and read factions from memory.
Not done: memoising getTotalForeignTaxRate (called once per faction per tick, so no gain) and one updateAllPrestige call per settlement (results would differ).
Testing
9 new tests (row reuse/keys/expiry, batch sync and failure paths). Locally 25 tests fail on Windows the same way as on main (folder fsync, case-insensitive names, POSIX permissions); Linux CI is the check.
Dev (TFMCDev01, 10-31 from 11:47 UTC): this PR's jar ran together with the other 12 jars from this round (VF, SF, MusicalInstruments, Magic on the Blood Magic branch, TLibs, GunsAndGadgets, Thievery, BirdMessenger, Surgery, CompanionPets, ActivityTF, MarketBlock), through two restarts. No error from any of them in the log. Bot TestChar1:
A chest, a double chest and a barrel, each full of shulker boxes of written books: open, pick up and put back, shift-click both ways. Every plugin's click/open listener ran; the stacks stayed intact and nothing was logged.
/faction list (row click works), /referral and /activity menus opened and worked.
The faction list stayed open through 7 s of refreshes with the same rows; clicking a row works.
Daily settlement: Dev settled day 38 by itself at 12:22:36 UTC. Day went to 39, the day-preparation journal reads prepared + settled, the settlement journal done, all 29 faction files were rewritten in that second, no .tmp files were left and nothing was logged. The 1-minute TPS for that minute was 19.7 (day 37 on the perf: cut fsyncs in the daily settlement without changing its order #218 build: 19.6; day 36 before perf: cut fsyncs in the daily settlement without changing its order #218: 19.0). Dev has few factions on a quiet disk, so this only shows no regression; the gain should show at Main's evening settlement.
Every menu click, drag and the once-a-second menu refresh asked the open
inventory for its holder with getHolder(). When that inventory belongs to
a block (a chest, barrel or furnace someone has open), Paper answers by
building a full snapshot copy of the block and its contents. On Main one
such click took 2 s in a single tick, and over 20 hours clickButton spent
29 s and the refresh 21 s there; the refresh asked up to seven times per
player.
SimpleFactions only checks whether the holder is one of its own menu
holders and never reads or changes a block holder, so every call now uses
getHolder(false), which returns the same holder object for plugin menus
and skips the snapshot for blocks. The click handler and the refresh now
also read the holder once and reuse it. Menus behave exactly as before.

An open faction list is redrawn every second, and each pass rebuilt every
row for every viewer: ranks, stability, guilds, subjects, allies and the
viewer's relations and intelligence for each faction on the page. On Main
that was about 10 s of server time per hour at peak, the steadiest cost of
the menu refresh.
The refresh now reuses a row it built for the same viewer, character and
faction in the last 5 seconds and rebuilds it after that. A row is never
reused for another viewer, after a character switch, or for a refounded
faction with the same id. Opening the list, paging and changing the ranking
still build every row fresh, the order of the rows is worked out on every
pass as before, and a viewer's rows are dropped when they leave. A change
to a faction now reaches an open list within 5 seconds instead of 1; what
the rows show is unchanged.

The 20:20 settlement on Main still held the server thread for 2 s. The
day preparation and the settlement effects already save their factions
through one DurableJson batch per step (#218), with one directory sync per
step, but each faction file's content was still synced on its own, one
after another, before its rename: about 1 s of the stall, in fsync.
A batch now takes each file's new content when it is written and does the
disk work in commit: it writes every content to a temporary file, syncs up
to 8 of them at a time on short-lived threads (syncs that run together
share the filesystem's journal commits), waits for all of them, then
renames each over its file and syncs each directory once, as before. The
order the journals depend on is unchanged: every content is synced before
its rename, every rename is synced before commit returns, and the journal
moves on only after commit. A crash before commit returns still leaves
each faction file whole, old or new, with the journal at the same step, so
the replay applies the same recorded after-values. A failed commit renames
nothing it could not sync, removes its temporary files and keeps the rest
of the batch for a retry.
Batch files are now replaced in commit rather than in write. Nothing reads
them in between: both callers commit right after their save loop.

Performance and reliability
Faction lists now reuse recently displayed items during periodic refreshes, while reopening a list displays freshly built items.
File updates are applied in batches when committed. If a commit fails, unfinished updates remain available for retry.
Quitting a faction list clears its displayed items.
The pull request changes JSON batch persistence, adds faction-list row reuse during periodic refreshes, and updates inventory holder lookups across menu handling and related tests.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review c36b5
The change is mergeable with bounded follow-up: improve failed-batch cleanup and clear closed-list caches. Deployments using military-only=false should also invalidate cached lore when exact access changes; otherwise revoked details can remain visible for up to five seconds.

Review fixes for the batch syncs and the faction-list rows (CodeRabbit):
- A batch now closes every temporary file even after one close fails,
and removes each leftover temporary file on its own. Close and cleanup
failures ride on the write failure as suppressed exceptions instead of
replacing it.
- A reused faction-list row also has to match the viewer's current exact
access, so losing espionage access shows the report on the next
refresh instead of up to 5 s of exact values.
- Closing an inventory drops that viewer's cached rows.
