🎯 Changes

Fixes #1065.

scrollToIndex and scrollToOffset do not move horizontal RTL lists because the default scroll function writes a positive offset, which the browser clamps to zero. Convert the logical offset, including measurement adjustments, to a negative DOM offset for horizontal RTL elements. Window, LTR, and vertical scrolling retain their existing coordinates.

On virtual-core@3.17.11, scrolling to column 6 with center alignment leaves scrollLeft at 0 and the column offscreen. With this fix, it reaches -570 and the column is centered.

🚀 Release Impact

Includes a patch changeset for @tanstack/virtual-core.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Fixed programmatic scrolling in horizontal right-to-left layouts so items are positioned correctly.
    • Scrolling to an item now accounts for logical offsets and measurement adjustments, while preserving expected behavior for vertical layouts and window scrolling.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for horizontal and vertical scrolling, including measurement adjustments and RTL offset handling.
    • Added end-to-end validation that scrolling to a specified column brings it into view in an RTL layout.

Walkthrough

Horizontal RTL element scrolling now converts adjusted logical offsets to negative DOM scroll offsets. Unit and end-to-end tests cover offset handling and reaching item 50 with scrollToIndex.

Changes: RTL programmatic scrolling

Layer / File(s) Summary
RTL offset conversion and observer coverage
packages/virtual-core/src/index.ts, packages/virtual-core/tests/dom-observers.test.ts, packages/virtual-core/tests/rtl-scroll.test.ts
scrollWithAdjustments now negates adjusted offsets for horizontal RTL element targets. Tests cover adjustments, vertical writes, RTL round trips, window targets, and logical offsets.
RTL scroll command coverage
packages/virtual-core/tests/scroll-commands.test.ts
Tests exercise scrollToIndex, scrollToOffset, and scrollBy with the default elementScroll function. They check the DOM offset, logical offset, and virtual items.
End-to-end RTL scroll validation
packages/marko-virtual/e2e/app/src/routes/rtl/+page.marko, packages/marko-virtual/e2e/app/e2e/option-gates.spec.ts, .changeset/tidy-rtl-scroll.md
The RTL page adds a control that scrolls to index 50. The end-to-end test checks for scrollLeft of -5000 and verifies item 50 is in the viewport. A changeset declares a patch release.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: restoring programmatic scrolling for horizontal RTL elements in virtual-core. The raw summary and objectives confirm the change converts logical offsets to negative DOM offsets for horizontal RTL elements. The title is specific, concise, and uses the conventional fix(scope) format.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. It has a Changes section that explains the bug (positive offset clamped to zero in RTL), the fix (negative DOM offset for horizontal RTL elements), and the unchanged behavior for window, LTR, and vertical scrolling. It also includes a concrete reproduction with before and after values (scrollLeft 0 versus -570) and links issue #1065. The Release Impact section states that a patch changeset is included, which matches the changeset file in the summary. The checklist items are not ticked, and the description does not state that the author ran pnpm run test:pr. These are minor gaps that do not make the description largely incomplete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1065 requires horizontal RTL scrollToIndex to scroll the requested item into view. At the reviewed head, packages/virtual-core/src/index.ts defines scrollWithAdjustments. It computes adjustedOffset = offset + adjustments. It sets isRtlElement when options.horizontal and options.isRtl are true and the scroll target has ownerDocument, which identifies an Element and excludes Window. For isRtlElement, it writes -adjustedOffset to left. Window, LTR, and vertical targets keep adjustedOffset. windowScroll and elementScroll both use this function. The read path in observeElementOffset negates scrollLeft under isRtl, so a written -X reads back as X. The PR tests cover RTL adjustments of 0, 25, and -25, vertical and LTR controls, scrollToIndex, scrollToOffset, and scrollBy on a clamping element, and a Marko e2e check that scrollToIndex(50) reaches scrollLeft -5000 with the item visible. Limit: the whole-PR base-to-head diff could not be read because changed blobs were missing from the checkout. The source logic was confirmed by reading the file at head. Test file contents were not re-read in this pass and rely on the previous assessment and PR evidence.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files are: packages/virtual-core/src/index.ts (RTL negative-offset write in scrollWithAdjustments), packages/virtual-core/tests/rtl-scroll.test.ts, dom-observers.test.ts, and scroll-commands.test.ts (unit tests for the RTL write, read-back, and window controls), packages/marko-virtual/e2e/app/e2e/option-gates.spec.ts (e2e test for #1065), packages/marko-virtual/e2e/app/src/routes/rtl/+page.marko (fixture supporting that e2e test, with a scroll-to-index-50 button and an explicit return type), and .changeset/tidy-rtl-scroll.md (patch changeset for @tanstack/virtual-core). Each change supports the RTL scroll fix or its tests and release note. No unrelated change is shown. The out-of-scope check relies on the file list and summaries because the whole-PR diff could not be read. Other files in the repository tree, such as .changeset/offset-for-index-fresh-measurements.md, are not listed among the PR changes and were not assessed.

Confirming this on current main (0a368c7, virtual-core 3.19.10). With horizontal: true, isRtl: true and the default elementScroll, scrollToIndex, scrollToOffset and scrollBy all write a positive left, which a dir="rtl" container clamps to 0: the list jumps to its start instead of the target. When it was already at the start, nothing moves and the command stays in flight, polling every frame until the reconcile safety valve drops it after 5 s.

This PR still cherry-picks cleanly onto main. I ran it against a few tests I had written for the same bug, and they all pass:

  • elementScroll writes left: -(offset + adjustments) under isRtl, for adjustments of 0, 25 and -25, and leaves a vertical write alone.
  • An elementScroll write read back through observeElementOffset returns the written offset.
  • scrollToIndex, scrollToOffset and scrollBy through a Virtualizer over an element that clamps scrollLeft to [-(scrollWidth - clientWidth), 0] and reports the scroll a frame later, as browsers do, land at scrollLeft -5000 / scrollOffset 5000.

The full virtual-core suite stays green with them (464 passed). The tests are in Kebechet@406284c (on top of this PR, rebased onto main) - feel free to pull them in.

We maintain a Blazor wrapper over virtual-core and work around this today with a custom scrollToFn that negates the offset, which we will drop once this is released. It would be great to get this reviewed.

Nitpick Add a horizontal RTL window test that pins the positive offset.

319-320: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a horizontal RTL window test that pins the positive offset.

The RTL parameterized test in rtl-scroll.test.ts covers only element targets. No test calls windowScroll with horizontal: true and isRtl: true. The current code keeps window offsets positive, but no assertion checks that behavior. If a later change negated RTL window writes, the suite would still pass. The test below closes that gap.

Suggested test
   expect(scrollTo).toHaveBeenCalledWith({ left: 240, behavior: 'auto' })
 })
+
+test('windowScroll: keeps positive left offset for horizontal RTL', () => {
+  const scrollTo = vi.fn()
+  const win = { scrollTo }
+  windowScroll(
+    250,
+    { behavior: 'auto' },
+ makeBaseInstance(win, { horizontal: true, isRtl: true }) as any,
+  )
+  expect(scrollTo).toHaveBeenCalledWith({ left: 250, behavior: 'auto' })
+})

Add a horizontal RTL window-target case to the existing RTL tests for
windowScroll, using the established test setup and asserting that a positive
offset is passed to scrollTo unchanged.

Nitpick Cover center alignment in the RTL scrollToIndex tests.

2008-2008: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Cover center alignment in the RTL scrollToIndex tests.

The RTL scrollToIndex cases in this file use only align: 'start'. No RTL test in the inspected virtual-core files requests center. An RTL-only change that maps center to start would still pass these tests. For index 50 with 100px items in a 500px viewport, center targets logical offset 4800, so the DOM write should be -4800.

Add an RTL `scrollToIndex` test using `setupRtlScroller` that requests center
alignment for index 50 and verifies the DOM write is -4800 while
`v.scrollOffset` is 4800. Keep the existing RTL start-alignment coverage.
