Summary

This PR closes the two operational gaps found while writing the FUSE filesystem guide.

  1. Signal handling in main.go.
    • Before. The server installed no signal handler, so SIGTERM/SIGINT ended the process through Go's default disposition. The errgroup never unwound, the CleanupStack never synced the WAL, and a --filesystemMount stayed attached to a dead server (Transport endpoint is not connected).
    • The handler. installShutdownSignalHandler now forwards SIGTERM/SIGINT into the root context's cancel. A signal stop therefore takes the same path the memory watchdog already uses: installFilesystemServerLifecycle unmounts, listeners drain, and the WAL syncs. The handler is installed before the Raft/Pebble runtimes are opened, so a stop during a slow open or snapshot restore is recorded and unwinds normally once the runtimes exist. The first signal cancels. Repeats during the shutdown are logged and ignored, and the registration stays in place until the store/runtime closers have run, so a supervisor's second SIGTERM cannot cut the cleanup short.
    • Bounded waits. Every wait on the shutdown path is bounded:
      • gRPC servers drain in-flight RPCs for at most 10 s (stopGRPCServerBounded). Stop then closes the remaining long-lived streams (catalog watches, Raft transport streams).
      • Every HTTP listener drains in-flight requests for a bound. monitoring.ShutdownHTTPServer then closes the remaining connections, and the forced close counts as a successful bounded stop. The bound is 10 s for the DynamoDB, S3 and SQS adapters and 5 s for the metrics, pprof and admin listeners.
      • The DynamoDB, S3 and SQS adapters then wait at most 2 s more for the handlers still running on the force-closed connections.
      • The S3 adapter closes its blob peer cluster only after that drain and after the admin object operations it counts and its background cleanups have finished, under the same bound. A cleanup still running at the bound is cancelled. An in-flight upload, read or admin object transfer keeps its peers for the whole window. A new admin object operation is refused with a not-leader 503 and Retry-After.
      • The SQS adapter joins its retention-reaper and throttle-sweep workers, under a bound, before the stores close.
      • The DynamoDB adapter joins the table cleanups a DeleteTable or legacy-table migration starts. It waits for them under the 10 s drain bound, cancels any still running, and joins them for at most 2 s more before the stores close. A delete that arrives once Stop began is refused with 503 before it commits, so shutdown refuses new cleanup obligations. Reservations that outlive both drain and final join are invalidated; durable cleanup recovery is not provided.
      • Concurrent Stop calls (the context waiter and the deferred call) share one drain and one join deadline, so neither returns while the other is still waiting.
      • Stopping the signal handler waits at most 1 s for its goroutine, which a blocked log write can hold.
      • The Redis adapter closes its listener and connections at once. It then waits at most 10 s for the commands still executing, because redcon does not join its handlers, so the stores are not closed underneath a command waiting on Raft. A pipelined command that redcon dispatches after the wait began is refused with ERR server is shutting down.
      • The FUSE shutdown has its own 10 s budget, described below.
    • Exit status. A pure context.Canceled surfaced by the errgroup after a signal maps to exit status 0 (onlyContextCanceled). A joined error is clean only when every branch is a cancellation. The memory watchdog's exitCodeMemoryPressure (2) path is unchanged and is checked first.
    • Startup failures. Two startup-failure branches previously returned straight into cleanup: startDistributionStartup, and the filesystem start after the public services are serving. Both now drain the errgroup through waitErrgroupAfterStartupFailure, so a signal during startup cannot close the stores under running workers.
    • Signal during the FUSE mount. The run context is passed into the FUSE mount path (fuseadapter.MountContext). A signal during filesystem startup aborts the pre-mount work (mount-point resolution, liveness probe, detach, intent recovery). It also aborts the kernel mount itself instead of waiting on a hung helper, a wedged daemon or the five-minute recovery timeout. go-fuse's helper wait runs in a goroutine. A mount that completes late is served briefly, its in-flight requests are cancelled, and it is released within one 10 s window: the readiness wait and the plain unmount share 7 s, the lazy detach gets the remaining 3 s, and the plain unmount is skipped once its deadline has passed. Startup joins late-mount cleanup for at most 10 s; a helper that remains stuck can outlive that budget, but the request context is cancelled before returning. A cancellation mid-detach keeps context.Canceled in the error chain. The post-mount readiness wait (Server.WaitMount) stops on the same context: it cancels the in-flight backend requests, so the kernel gets an answer for the root getattr that go-fuse's readiness check triggers, and then releases the mount under the same bounds.
    • Signal stop never hangs on the FUSE mount. go-fuse's Unmount can block on an event loop stuck in a backend request. The unmount is therefore started once in the background (filesystemUnmounter) under one 10 s budget. A plain unmount that fails with EBUSY, or does not return in time, falls back to a lazy detach (Server.UnmountLazy) within the same budget. The serve-loop wait shares that budget in both branches. The CleanupStack entry never re-waits on a stuck unmount, so the WAL sync and store close that follow always run.
  2. Stale-mount recovery in fuseadapter.Mount.
    • What counts as stale. Before mounting, Mount detaches a dangling FUSE mount at the mount point. A mount counts as stale only when both of these hold:

      • The topmost /proc/self/mounts entry for the path has this server's own type, fuse.<Name> (fuse.elastickv). go-fuse records the mount options' Name as the subtype.
      • stat on the path fails with ENOTCONN.
    • Never touched. A live mount, a mount with any other stat error, any non-FUSE filesystem, fuseblk, a bare fuse mount, another FUSE subtype such as fuse.sshfs, and any filesystem stacked over a dead mount of ours.

    • Shutdown guard. The same type check guards the shutdown-time lazy detach, before each helper runs and again right before the unmount(2) fallback. go-fuse's Unmount may already have removed the mount and be waiting only for its event loop. A path that no longer holds our mount is then left alone, whatever sits underneath.

    • Bounded probe. Two steps are each bounded by the context and a 10 s timeout:

      • The liveness stat.
      • The resolution of the mount point's parent directories. EvalSymlinks stats every component and can block on a wedged outer filesystem.

A server that is alive but wedged, or a mount point under an unresponsive filesystem, fails startup with a clear error instead of hanging. No other pre-probe step issues a request through the mount. Symlink resolution of the mount point itself uses Readlink only.

    • Detaching.

      • It uses the same helpers go-fuse's own unmount uses: fusermount3 -u -z, then fusermount -u -z. Like go-fuse, it looks them up on PATH and then in /bin.
      • Each invocation gets at most half of the caller's remaining deadline, with the post-kill pipe wait reserved out of that share, so the kernel fallback stays reachable.
      • When no helper is available or the helper fails, it falls back to a lazy unmount(2) (umount -l, Linux only, build-tagged).
      • Each detach logs the mount point, type and mechanism (detached stale filesystem FUSE mount left by a previous process).
    • Detach loop. The loop re-inspects after each detach. A mount that vanished in between is neither counted nor an error. The loop errors only if a stale mount is still present after 8 detaches.

    • Symlinked mount point. It is resolved with Readlink, never traversing into the dead target. Relative link targets are interpreted from the canonical parent, as the kernel does, so the kernel's recorded target matches.

    • No mounts table. An unreadable /proc/self/mounts (no /proc in a chroot or minimal container, or a non-Linux host) skips the startup check with a warning instead of failing the mount, and the shutdown-time detach is refused.

filesystemStartConfig gains a mountOptions field that production leaves nil, so the fusermount3 path is unchanged. Tests set DirectMount when running as root, so the kernel-mount tests run in containers without fusermount3. The kernel-mount E2E test files are tagged linux. The package and main cross-compile for darwin (GOOS=darwin go vet).

Docs

  • docs/filesystem.md.
    • "Stopping and restarting" now covers the graceful stop and when it exits 0. It also covers the bounded busy-mount lazy detach, which acts only on the server's own fuse.elastickv type, the bounded gRPC, HTTP and Redis drains, and the restart detaching a dead mount by itself.
    • The startup sequence gains the stale-mount step, naming that type. It comes before intent recovery, matching Mount.
    • The two Transport endpoint is not connected troubleshooting rows now point at a restart instead of a manual fusermount3 -uz.
    • New troubleshooting rows cover the detach stale filesystem FUSE mount: ... error, the probe timeout, the mount-point resolution timeout and a foreign filesystem at the path.
    • "Verifying a build" names the new tests.
    • A stop requested while the Raft/Pebble stores are still opening takes effect once the open finishes, and an open that never returns needs SIGKILL (ce411b7).
  • README.md. The sentence in "Working with the FUSE filesystem" now says the server unmounts on SIGTERM/SIGINT and detaches a dead mount on restart.
  • jepsen/src/elastickv/db.clj. Untouched. It keeps its own unmount-filesystem-cmd, which handles SIGKILL, a signal no handler can catch.

Note on docs/filesystem.md. The guide landed on main through bootjp/elastickv#1271 and its later review rounds after this PR was opened. Commit 9dcb445 takes main's README and guide, and merge commit 5a559a4 then merges main. Commit a96874f re-applies only the section edits above on top of the guide. The README keeps main's new default_permissions/fusermount3 sentences.

Behaviour change / risk

  • Orderly signal stop. Operators who stop the server with SIGTERM/SIGINT now get an orderly shutdown and exit status 0 instead of an immediate kill. Supervisors that relied on an immediate exit will see the shutdown take as long as the errgroup drain. SIGKILL behaviour is unchanged. The bounds are:

    Wait Bound
    gRPC GracefulStop 10 s
DynamoDB/S3/SQS HTTP drain, S3 admin object operations and background cleanups, SQS workers 10 s
S3 background cleanups cancelled at that bound, to return 2 s
    Metrics/pprof/admin HTTP drain 5 s
Redis in-flight commands, after the listener closes 10 s
    FUSE unmount 10 s
  • Signal during the Raft/Pebble open. The signal now cancels the root context rather than killing the process mid-open. The open itself is not interruptible, so a stop requested during a long snapshot restore takes effect once the runtimes exist. Only flag parsing and configuration before run() keep the default disposition.

  • Startup detach. Mount now executes fusermount3 -u -z / unmount(2) on startup. It does so only against a path the mounts table lists as fuse.elastickv, the server's own type, with a broken transport. By construction it cannot act on a non-FUSE mount, a bare fuse mount or another FUSE subtype, because the table type decides and the stat error alone never does. If detaching fails, Mount returns detach stale filesystem FUSE mount: ... instead of go-fuse's failed to access mountpoint, and the guide documents that error. A wedged live FUSE server at the path, or a mount point under an unresponsive filesystem, now fails startup after a 10 s bound instead of hanging forever in fusermount or in path resolution.

  • Repeat signals. A second SIGTERM no longer kills the process immediately. SIGKILL remains the escape hatch, as documented. Every wait in the gRPC, HTTP and Redis drains and in the FUSE startup and shutdown paths is bounded or cancellable, so this cannot leave the process stuck. That includes the CleanupStack entry, the post-mount readiness wait, and the release of a mount that completed after cancellation. The one exception is the context-free Raft/Pebble open: a hang there now needs SIGKILL. The maintainer chose to keep this and document it (round 19).

  • Adapter Stop methods.

    • All callers affected. The HTTP bound applies to every caller, because the DynamoDBServer, S3Server and SQSServer Stop methods themselves changed. A request that outlives the bound is now cut off with a logged warning rather than waited on.
    • S3. S3Server.Stop closes the blob peer cluster after the drain, the admin object wait and the background-cleanup join, rather than before them.
    • Redis. RedisServer.Stop now blocks for up to the bound while a command is still executing. Previously it returned as soon as the listener was closed. Once that wait begins, any command still dispatched is refused.
    • SQS. SQSServer.Stop now also joins its background workers.
  • Auxiliary listeners. The metrics, pprof and admin listeners keep their 5 s drain but now also close what is left afterwards, and that forced close no longer surfaces as an error. Previously a request that outlived the window made the shutdown task return context.DeadlineExceeded. main treated that as a failure and exited 1, even on a signal stop.

  • Known, accepted gaps. These are review findings, left open for the maintainer.

    • Two servers on one stale mount point. If two server processes start against the same stale mount point within microseconds of each other, the second could lazily detach the first's fresh mount. The inspection runs immediately before each detach. Two servers on one mount point is already an unsupported configuration; before this PR they would stack. A mountinfo identity check can be added if wanted.
    • Orphaned mount helper. When a fusermount3 helper hangs during the kernel mount and the context is cancelled, MountContext returns but cannot terminate the helper. go-fuse starts it inside fuse.NewServer and exposes neither the process nor a context. MountContext runs once per process at startup, and a cancellation means the process is exiting. The goroutine therefore ends with the process, and init reaps the orphaned helper. That is the same outcome as before this PR, where the hung helper blocked startup instead. A /proc scan for the child could be added for a long-lived caller that retries.
    • S3 backfiller join (round 16). S3BlobBackfiller.Stop still joins its workers without a bound, exactly as on main.
      • The workers wait only on runCtx, which Stop cancels first, except for the Pebble dbMu.RLock.
      • Only Restore, Close, newSSTIngestSnapshot and retireMigrationWithOpts hold that lock exclusively, and each finishes on its own.
      • Close runs after S3Server.Stop, so it cannot be the holder here. During a snapshot restore the Raft shutdown already waits for the same restore.
      • A bound here would therefore not bound the stop. It would also close the blob cluster and the stores under a running worker.
    • Admin forwarding cache (round 19). prepareAdminConnCache closes the cache on ctx.Done() alongside the 5 s admin drain, exactly as on main, so a forwarded admin request inside the window can lose its connection. The fix is a main.go lifecycle reorder, proposed as a follow-up.
    • Repeated signals while the store opens (round 19, decided). Repeat signals are swallowed on purpose, so a hang inside the context-free Raft/Pebble open needs SIGKILL, where main used to die on the first SIGTERM. Supervisors escalate to SIGKILL on their own. The maintainer chose to keep this behaviour, and docs/filesystem.md documents it (ce411b7).
    • Two ElasticKV mounts stacked at one mount point (round 17). If this server's mount sits over another live ElasticKV mount at the same path, the shutdown-time lazy detach could detach the lower one once go-fuse's Unmount has removed ours. The type guard cannot tell two ElasticKV mounts apart. This needs two servers on one mount point, the unsupported configuration above. Closing it means moving the checks to /proc/self/mountinfo and carrying the mount ID through every detach path, the same follow-up as the identity check above.

Review rounds

  • Round 1 (review, commit 90e339d). Six findings were fixed, each with a regression test. One was answered without a code change (the race above).

    • The startup error branch did not drain the errgroup.
    • Joined errors (a cancellation plus a real failure) exited 0.
    • A missing /proc/self/mounts failed a clean mount.
    • Exactly 8 stacked mounts were misreported.
    • A symlinked mount point was not matched.
    • The docs step order was wrong.
  • Round 2 (review, commit f541436). Two findings fixed with tests:

    • A relative symlink target under a symlinked parent was resolved against the typed parent instead of the canonical one.
    • The pre-mount detach and intent recovery ran on background contexts, so a shutdown signal during filesystem startup could not interrupt them. MountContext now takes the run context.
  • Round 3 (review, commit c784758). Three findings fixed:

    • syscall.MNT_DETACH broke the darwin build of the package (P1). The lazy unmount is split into build-tagged Linux and non-Linux files, and the E2E tests are tagged linux. Verified with GOOS=darwin go vet.
    • The filesystem startup error bypassed the errgroup drain while public services were serving.
    • A cancelled fusermount helper fell through to the privileged fallback and lost context.Canceled. A test was added.
  • Round 4 (review, commit ea0c2a4). Two findings fixed with tests:

    • The liveness stat on a wedged FUSE daemon blocked with no way to cancel. It now runs in a goroutine, bounded by the context and a 10 s probe timeout.
    • A failed EBUSY unmount during a signal stop waited on the serve loop forever while repeat signals were swallowed. It now does a lazy detach plus a bounded wait, exercised by a real open-file E2E test.
  • Round 5 (review, commit bf34868). Two findings fixed:

    • go-fuse's Unmount itself can block on an event loop stuck in a backend request, before the round-4 timer started. The unmount now runs in a goroutine under the same 10 s budget, with the lazy detach as fallback, tested with a blocking fake.
    • Symlink resolution used Lstat on the mount point, a getattr through a possibly wedged mount, before the bounded probe. It now uses Readlink only, which the kernel answers from the dentry type.
  • Round 6 (review, commit 01a3f73). One finding fixed.

    • The bug. The CleanupStack entry called the same sync.OnceValue unmount the lifecycle had started. A second call waits on the stuck first one, so cleanup could still hang. The test had masked it by releasing the fake first.
    • The fix. filesystemUnmounter replaces it. It is started once in the background and its completion is observed through a channel. Cleanup skips when the lifecycle already handled the stop, and otherwise waits under a bound.
    • Tests. The hung-unmount test now runs cleanup while the unmount is still stuck, and a cleanup-only test was added.
  • Round 7 (review, commit 432b09e). Four findings fixed:

    • The lazy detach after a hung unmount opened a fresh 10 s context, doubling the documented budget. There is now one shared stopCtx: 4/5 for the plain unmount, and the rest for the detach and the serve-loop wait.
    • fuse.NewServer waits on the fusermount helper with no context, so a hung helper blocked startup past a signal. It now runs in a goroutine and is cancellable, tested with a sleeping fusermount3 stand-in on PATH.
    • The signal handler was installed after the Raft/Pebble runtimes opened. It moved before buildShardGroupsWithEncryptionWiring.
    • The detacher looked helpers up on PATH only, while go-fuse also tries /bin. That lookup is now mirrored, with a test.
  • Round 8 (review, commit d3ce3d4). One finding fixed.

    • The bug. The cleanup of a mount that completed after cancellation called Unmount without Serve. go-fuse's Unmount waits on an event loop only Serve runs, so that goroutine, the server and the /dev/fuse descriptor would have been retained forever.
    • The fix. releaseAbandonedMount now serves, unmounts, and falls back to the lazy detach.
    • Test. TestReleaseAbandonedMountReturns mounts for real and requires the release to return with a clean mount table.
  • Round 9 (review, commit 43e3e64).

    • Fixed. A fusermount helper that hung for the caller's whole remaining deadline made the cancellation check return before the MNT_DETACH fallback. Each helper invocation now gets at most half of the remaining deadline, plus a 500 ms WaitDelay on its pipes. It is tested with a stand-in that execs /bin/sleep.
    • Test fix found along the way. The round-7 hung-helper stand-in turned out not to hang, because sleep was not on the test's restricted PATH. Both stand-ins now exec /bin/sleep, and both tests assert they really waited.
    • Answered without a code change. The orphaned-helper gap above.
    • CodeRabbit (commit 128cf37). A stale "step 4" cross-reference in the guide was fixed to step 3.
  • Round 10 (review, commit 909090e). Two findings fixed with tests:

    • gRPC GracefulStop blocks until every in-flight RPC ends, so a long-lived stream kept a SIGTERM waiting forever while repeat signals were swallowed (P1). stopGRPCServerBounded now drains for at most 10 s and then calls Stop. It is tested with a stream whose handler returns only on context end.
    • The hung-unmount branch returned right after the lazy detach instead of using the reserved remainder of the budget to wait for the serve loop. It now falls through to the same wait, tested.
  • Round 11 (review). One finding fixed with tests (P1).

    • The bug. The DynamoDB, S3 and SQS adapters stopped through http.Server.Shutdown(context.Background()). A client that stalls mid-request kept the adapter's errgroup goroutine from returning after a SIGTERM, while repeat signals were swallowed.
    • The fix. The adapters' Stop now drains for at most 10 s and then calls Close on the remaining connections.
    • Test. TestHTTPAdapterStopBoundsStalledRequest holds a request open against each adapter and requires Stop to return inside the bound. Before the fix it hung until the test timeout. Idle and double-Stop tests sit alongside.
  • Round 12 (review). Two findings fixed with tests.

    • Auxiliary listeners. The metrics, pprof and admin shutdown tasks returned the context.DeadlineExceeded from their 5 s Shutdown and never forced the remaining connections closed. A SIGTERM during a long /debug/pprof/profile or a slow admin request therefore exited 1 instead of 0.
      • monitoring.ShutdownHTTPServer now drains, then calls Close and reports that as success. The three tasks and the round-11 adapter helper all use it.
      • TestAuxiliaryShutdownTasksReturnNilAfterForcedClose and TestRegisterAdminLifecycleReturnsCleanAfterForcedClose returned DeadlineExceeded before the fix.
    • Helper pipe wait. detachHelperTimeout did not reserve the post-kill WaitDelay pipe wait out of each helper's share. Two hung helpers that leave children on their pipes could overrun the budget and skip the MNT_DETACH fallback.
      • The pipe wait is now subtracted from the share.
      • TestDetachFUSEMountReachesKernelFallbackWhenHelpersHoldPipes fails with context deadline exceeded on the previous formula.
    • CodeRabbit. The guide now says status 0 is for a shutdown whose only errors are the cancellation itself. The serve-loop timing test's margin was widened from 60 ms to 300 ms (2 s budget), so scheduling jitter on CI cannot fail it.
  • Round 13 (review). Two findings fixed with tests, and one re-verified and pinned without a code change.

    • Lazy detach acted on the path alone (P1). go-fuse's Unmount removes the kernel mount before blocking on its event loop. The MNT_DETACH fallback could therefore have unmounted whatever filesystem the mount point sits on.
      • detachFUSEMount now verifies the mounts table before the helpers and again before unmount(2).
      • UnmountLazy and the abandoned-mount release treat "no mount of ours" as nothing to do.
      • The startup loop re-inspects instead of counting a vanished mount.
      • Tests: TestDetachFUSEMountRefusesPathWithoutFUSEMount, TestDetachFUSEMountRechecksBeforeKernelFallback, TestDetachAllReinspectsWhenMountVanishes, the root-only TestDetachFUSEMountLeavesForeignMountAlone against a real tmpfs, and the kernel E2E test asserting UnmountLazy is a no-op after a clean unmount.
    • S3 blob cluster closed too early. S3Server.Stop closed the blob peer cluster before the HTTP drain, failing in-flight uploads and reads at once. Test: TestS3ServerStopDrainsHTTPBeforeClosingBlobCluster.
    • Re-verified, no code change. The finding claimed that grpc.Server.Serve returns as soon as GracefulStop closes the listener, letting the errgroup task finish mid-drain. That does not hold for grpc-go v1.83.2. Serve defers a wait on the server's done event, which fires only after the drain or the forced Stop has closed every transport, so the task already waits for the whole window. TestGRPCServeReturnsOnlyAfterBoundedStop pins that instead of restructuring the task.
  • Round 14 (review). Two findings fixed with tests.

    • Unbounded parent resolution. Resolving the mount point's parent directories called filepath.EvalSymlinks, which stats every component. It can block indefinitely when a parent sits on a wedged FUSE or network filesystem, and it ran before the bounded probe with repeat signals ignored.
      • The resolution now runs in a goroutine under the context and a 10 s bound. On timeout it reports a *mountProbeError with op resolve FUSE mount point.
      • Test: TestTopmostMountStopsWhenResolutionBlocks. The race detector caught its first version racing with the leaked goroutine. That was fixed by capturing the resolver before starting it.
    • Unbounded late-mount release. The release of a mount that completed after cancellation ran go-fuse's Unmount unbounded, so a hung helper or a stuck backend request kept the late mount attached.
      • releaseAbandoned now gives it 10 s and falls back to the lazy detach.
      • Tests: TestReleaseAbandonedDetachesWhenUnmountHangs, TestReleaseAbandonedFallsBackOnlyWhenUnmountFails.
  • Round 15 (review). Two findings fixed with tests, both P1.

    • Any fuse.* subtype accepted. The round-13 guard accepted any fuse.* subtype. With the mount point on the root of another FUSE filesystem such as sshfs, the fallback could still detach that filesystem.
      • The startup inspection and both detach-time checks now require the server's exact type.
      • Tests: subtype cases in the detection and refusal tables, and TestFUSETypeFor. Docs were updated.
    • Redis task finished early. redcon ends Serve as soon as the listener closes and does not join its handler goroutines. The Redis errgroup task therefore finished while a command was still executing, for example a SETEX under its 30 s dispatch context, and the deferred cleanup could close the stores underneath it.
      • RedisServer now counts commands in flight. Stop waits up to 10 s for them after closing the listener, only on its first call.
      • Tests: TestRedisServerStopWaitsForInflightCommandWithinBound, TestRedisServerStopReturnsOnceInflightCommandFinishes, TestRedisServerStopReturnsPromptlyWhenIdle.
  • Round 16 (review, commits 55c9336, 59ae4ec, 02a6201, 5687da4, 639f4b6, 5efa169). Five findings fixed with tests. One finding was answered without a code change, and six re-raised findings were already fixed on the head.

    • Redis pipeline after drain (P1). A command in a pipeline that redcon dispatched after the first command's exit brought the count to zero could still run against closed stores.

      • The in-flight count is now a gate (adapter/inflight_gate.go) that refuses entry once a drain began. enter increments before it checks the draining flag, and drain sets the flag before it reads the count.
      • The handler answers a refused command with ERR server is shutting down.
      • Tests: TestRedisServerStopRejectsPipelinedCommandAfterDrain and two gate tests.
    • S3 admin object operations. Admin S3 object operations run on the separate admin listener, so the S3 HTTP drain did not wait for them before the blob cluster closed.

      • AdminPutObject, and AdminGetObject until its body is closed, are now counted through the same gate. Stop waits for them under httpShutdownTimeout before closing the cluster.
      • Operations that arrive later get ErrAdminS3Stopping. The admin bridge maps it to the not-leader 503 with Retry-After.
      • Tests: TestS3ServerStopWaitsForAdminObjectReadBeforeClosingBlobCluster, TestS3ServerStopGivesUpOnUnclosedAdminReadAfterBound, TestTranslateAdminObjectsErrorMapsStoppingToNotLeader.
    • SQS background workers. SQSServer.Stop never joined the retention reaper or the throttle sweep loop.

      • Both now start through a worker group that Stop joins after the HTTP drain, bounded by sqsWorkerStopTimeout. The group refuses new workers once stopping.
      • Tests are in adapter/sqs_shutdown_test.go.
    • FUSE type built from the wrong field. go-fuse records fuse.<MountOptions.Name> as the mount type, and FsName only fills the source column. The type was built from FsName, so a configuration whose FsName differs from Name would never have matched its own mount.

      • The stale-mount check, Server.fsType and the abandoned-mount release now use fuseTypeFor(opts.Name).
      • Test: TestMountContextTypeFollowsMountName, a real mount with different FsName and Name.
    • CI failure. TestDetachFUSEMountRechecksBeforeKernelFallback failed on GitHub runners, because the real /bin/fusermount was found through the /bin fallback. The helper-isolation tests now point both the PATH and the fallback directory at a test directory (onlyMountHelpersIn).

    • Answered without a code change. The unbounded S3BlobBackfiller.Stop join, listed under the accepted gaps.

    • Already fixed on the head. The review re-review flagged six items it reported as still present in the "final target":

      • The exact own-type requirement.
      • The guard in UnmountLazy.
      • The bounded abandoned unmount.
      • The bounded parent canonicalization.
      • The reserved WaitDelay.
      • The ErrAdminS3Stopping translation.

All six are present on 5efa169, and the replies name the covering tests.

  • Round 17 (review, commits 6c60784, 57241ff). Two findings fixed with tests, and one answered without a code change.

    • Second helper without a recheck. fusermount3 can detach our mount and still report a failure, for example when a descendant keeps its output pipe open past WaitDelay. The legacy fusermount then ran without a recheck and accepts any FUSE filesystem, so it could detach a foreign FUSE mount the first helper exposed.
      • detachWithHelpers now re-runs requireFUSEMount before any helper that follows a failed one. A path that no longer shows our mount yields errNoFUSEMount, with the first failure kept in the chain.
      • Test: TestDetachFUSEMountRechecksBeforeSecondHelper.
    • Readiness wait ignored cancellation. go-fuse's WaitMount has no context, and its poll hack makes the kernel send a root getattr through to the backend, which can block while no leader is available. main installs the filesystem shutdown lifecycle only after WaitMount returns, so a SIGTERM in that window waited forever with repeat signals ignored. The caller of a request already handed to the server also waits for it uninterruptibly, and that caller is this same process.
      • Server.WaitMount now also stops on the context MountContext ran under. It cancels every in-flight request, because all request contexts now derive from one server-wide parent.
      • Once the readiness check has returned, it unmounts under abandonedUnmountTimeout with the guarded lazy detach as fallback. If the check does not return within the bound, it runs the lazy detach alone, because go-fuse's Unmount must not run alongside it. The race detector caught that overlap.
      • It then marks the Server released, so the Unmount and serve-loop waits main does after the error return at once. main.go itself is unchanged.
      • Test: TestWaitMountStopsWhenCancelledWhileReadinessBlocks, a real mount whose backend getattr blocks. It failed before the fix with WaitMount did not return after its context was cancelled.
    • Answered without a code change. Instance identity for two stacked ElasticKV mounts, listed under the accepted gaps.
  • Round 18 (review, commit eba7347). One finding fixed with a test.

    • Unbounded helper lookup. exec.LookPath stats each PATH directory, and a directory on a wedged FUSE or network filesystem blocks it with nothing to interrupt the stat. The lookup ran before the bounded helper invocation, so a shutdown lazy detach could outlast its budget forever.
      • lookupMountHelperContext now runs the lookup in its own goroutine and waits only for the share of the deadline a helper invocation gets. A lookup that does not answer counts as the helper not being found, so the kernel fallback stays reachable.
      • Test: TestDetachFUSEMountBoundsHelperLookup. With the lookup called unbounded it hung until -timeout.
  • Round 19 (review, commits 38965a9, bea9aae). Two findings fixed with tests. Two are left open for the maintainer.

    • Recheck after every helper lookup. The mount re-check ran only after a failed helper. A foreign FUSE mount exposed while the first lookup was still resolving could therefore reach fusermount3 -u -z. detachWithHelpers now calls requireFUSEMount after every lookup, immediately before each helper runs. Test: TestDetachFUSEMountRechecksAfterHelperLookup.
    • S3 background cleanups. The four async cleanups (manifest blobs, upload parts, part blobs, upload data) ran detached under context.Background(). Stop could therefore return, and the stores close, while they were still dispatching deletes.
      • startCleanup counts each cleanup in an inflightGate and derives its context from a server-owned cleanup context.
      • Stop joins the cleanups under the same deadline as the admin blob operations, cancels any left over, and only then closes the blob cluster. A cleanup requested after Stop began is refused.
      • Tests: TestS3ServerStopWaitsForCleanupBeforeClosingBlobCluster, TestS3ServerStopCancelsCleanupAfterBound and TestS3ServerStopRefusesLateCleanup. All three failed before the change.
    • Admin forwarding cache (open). The cache closing in its own errgroup task on ctx.Done(), beside the 5 s admin drain, is unchanged from main. Fixing it means reordering the main.go lifecycle. Proposed as a follow-up.
    • Repeated signals during startup (decided). A hang in the context-free store open now needs SIGKILL, because repeat signals are swallowed on purpose (see lens 1). The maintainer chose to keep that and document it, which ce411b7 does.
  • Round 20 (review, commit 283bc3f). One finding fixed with tests.

    • Cancelled cleanups were not joined. After the bound, Stop cancelled the remaining cleanups and returned at once. A cleanup still unwinding out of Dispatch or ScanAt could therefore touch the blob cluster and the stores after they closed.
      • drainCleanups now waits, under s3CleanupJoinTimeout (2 s), for the cancelled cleanups to return. The gate gains a one-shot join, so a second Stop does not wait again.
      • The cancellation stays after the drain, so a cleanup that finishes inside the bound is never cut.
      • Tests: TestS3ServerStopJoinsCleanupAfterCancellingIt and TestS3ServerStopBoundsJoinOfCleanupIgnoringCancellation, which both failed before the fix, and TestInflightGateJoinWaitsAfterDrainGaveUp.
    • CI on 283bc3f. test (ubuntu-latest) failed once in TestGRPCS3BlobClusterAuthenticatedCapabilityPushAndFetch, which got codes.Unknown where it expected codes.Unauthenticated. That test and the code it exercises are not in this diff. The test passes 200 times in a row locally under -race, and the failed job was re-run once and passed.
    • CI on ce411b7 (commit 4a4c47c). test (ubuntu-latest) failed in TestInstallFilesystemServerLifecycleCleanupBoundsHungUnmount, a test this PR added. Its teardown closed serveDone before cancelling the context, so the lifecycle sometimes saw the serve loop end first and correctly reported "stopped unexpectedly". That reproduced 16 times in 3000 local -race runs. The teardown now cancels first, as a real shutdown does, and 3000 runs pass. The production code is unchanged.
  • Round 21 (review, commit bbe0367). One finding fixed with a test.

    • Admin deletes were not counted. AdminDeleteObject did not enter the admin-operation gate. Stop could therefore drain and close the cleanup gate while an admitted delete was still committing, and the blob cleanup it then scheduled was refused, leaving the deleted object's blob keys behind.
      • The delete now enters the same gate as AdminPutObject and AdminGetObject. Stop waits for it, bounded, before draining the cleanups, and a delete that arrives after Stop began gets ErrAdminS3Stopping, which the admin bridge maps to the not-leader 503.
      • Test: TestS3ServerStopWaitsForAdminDeleteAndItsCleanup, which failed before the fix.
  • Round 22 (review, commits 816a0d1, 8cf7c48, 14ad332 + b152648, 5030ad7, 66d7406). Five findings fixed with tests.

    • Lazy detach left handlers blocked. UnmountLazy now cancels every request in flight, and every later one, before it detaches, so a handler blocked in the backend returns inside the grace period instead of running on after the stores close (816a0d1). The guide notes that an open handle on a busy mount gets errors from then on.
    • DynamoDB table cleanups were not joined. The cleanup a DeleteTable or legacy-table migration starts ran detached under context.Background(). It now runs through backgroundWorkers, which counts it in an inflightGate under a context Stop cancels; Stop waits for it under the drain bound, cancels it, and joins it under dynamoTableCleanupJoinTimeout (8cf7c48).
    • Signal logged before cancelling. The handler logged before it cancelled the root context, so a blocked log write held the shutdown back while later signals are swallowed. It now cancels first (14ad332; b152648 restores a blank line an API push dropped). Test: TestInstallShutdownSignalHandlerCancelsBeforeLogging.
    • Startup release took up to 30 s. The readiness wait, the plain unmount and the lazy detach each had a fresh 10 s bound. They now share one 10 s window (abandonedUnmountTimeout 7 s, abandonedDetachTimeout 3 s) (5030ad7). Tests: TestReleaseAfterReadinessSharesTheUnmountDeadline and TestReleaseAfterReadinessBoundsTheLazyDetach.
    • Admin delete committed after Stop closed the cleanup gate. A table delete through the admin surface is not covered by the listener drain, so it could commit and then have its cleanup refused, leaving the old generation behind. The delete and the migration switch now reserve a cleanup slot before committing; once Stop began the reservation is refused and the change is not committed (66d7406). Tests: TestDynamoDBAdminDeleteTableRefusedOnceStopBegan and TestBackgroundWorkersReservationHoldsStop.
  • Merge with main (512fc52, merge 0b845d1). main rewrote AdminPutObject and turned translateAdminObjectsError into a sentinel table over lines this branch had changed. 512fc52 marks ErrAdminS3Stopping as ErrAdminNotLeader and moves the gate entry next to the leader check, so main merged cleanly through GitHub's branch update. Behaviour is unchanged.

    • CI on 512fc52. TestRunFilesystemLeaseReaperLogsErrorsAndContinues failed once. Its select between the ticker and ctx.Done() races, the test and the reaper are not in this diff, and it fails the same way on main; a proposed patch is in a PR comment. CI on 0b845d1 was green.
  • Round 23 (review, commits 63bc505, 9ecaca9, bab4b5c + 69663e5, c1c7631). Five findings fixed with tests.

    • Late mount released without cancelling its requests. releaseAbandonedMount now takes the RawFileSystem and calls cancelInFlight before unmounting (63bc505). Test: TestReleaseAbandonedMountReturns now asserts the in-flight request is cancelled.
    • Plain unmount started past its deadline. releaseAbandonedBy skips go-fuse's unbounded Unmount when no time is left and goes straight to the guarded lazy detach (63bc505). Test: TestReleaseAbandonedSkipsUnmountPastItsDeadline.
    • Concurrent Stop calls did not share the join. The gate's drain and join and the SQS worker stop now fix one deadline on the first call, and every concurrent call waits until it (9ecaca9). Tests: TestInflightGateConcurrentDrainsShareOneDeadline, TestInflightGateConcurrentJoinsShareOneDeadline and TestSQSServerConcurrentStopsShareTheWorkerJoin.
    • DynamoDB stopping error answered 500 to admin clients. ErrDynamoServerStopping is marked as ErrAdminNotLeader, so the admin bridge answers the retryable 503 with Retry-After; the public listener still answers 503 ServiceUnavailable (bab4b5c, 69663e5). Tests: TestTranslateAdminDynamoErrorsMapStoppingToNotLeader and TestDynamoDBStoppingErrorIsServiceUnavailable.
    • Unbounded wait on the signal handler goroutine. The stop func waited on the goroutine forever, which a blocked log write can hold at the very end of the shutdown. It now waits at most shutdownSignalHandlerJoinTimeout (1 s) (c1c7631). Test: TestInstallShutdownSignalHandlerStopDoesNotWaitOnBlockedLog.

Every test named in rounds 22 and 23 failed before its fix unless noted.

  • Round 24 (review, commit 3eb6989, and its review). One finding fixed with tests, and two left as a follow-up.

    • Force-closed HTTP handlers were not joined. http.Server.Close closes the connections a stalled request holds but does not wait for their handlers, so Stop returned and the stores could close under a handler still unwinding out of a store call. The DynamoDB, S3 and SQS adapters now count their connections through ConnState (httpConnTracker), which net/http reports as closed only after the handler returned, and shutdownHTTPServer waits up to httpHandlerJoinTimeout (2 s) for them after the forced close. Tests: TestHTTPAdapterStopJoinsHandlerAfterForcedClose and TestHTTPAdapterStopBoundsJoinOfHandlerIgnoringClose, which both failed before the fix.
    • Cleanups of operations that commit after the bound (follow-up, decided). An S3 admin delete, or a DynamoDB table delete or migration switch, whose commit lands after the shutdown bound loses its asynchronous cleanup: the S3 cleanup gate refuses it, and the DynamoDB reservation starts under the cancelled context. Shutdown ordering can only move that cutoff, and the commit can still land through the other replicas after the process exits. It is the same window as a crash between the commit and the cleanup, which main already has. The maintainer chose to leave it to a follow-up: a durable cleanup intent, the M3 blob orphan scanner, or a startup sweep of unreferenced generations.

History note. At the maintainer's request, the history after 909090e was rewritten so that every later commit is authored by bootjp and carries GitHub's signature. Commits 9dcb445 onwards are created through the GitHub API. The commit hashes previously cited for rounds 11 to 15 belonged to the replaced history, and their content is carried by the new commits:

Test evidence

  • Round 16, on head 5efa169. All of these pass:

    Check Result
    ELASTICKV_REQUIRE_FUSE=1 go test -race -count=1 . ok, 49 s
    ELASTICKV_REQUIRE_FUSE=1 go test -race -count=1 ./internal/filesystem/fuseadapter/... ok, 5.6 s
    go test -race -count=1 ./adapter/... ok, 244 s
    go test -race -count=1 ./monitoring/... ok, 3 s
    golangci-lint run --config=.golangci.yaml (whole repo) 0 issues
    GOOS=darwin go vet . ./adapter/... ./internal/filesystem/... ./monitoring/... clean
    gofmt clean

On 57241ff (round 17): ELASTICKV_REQUIRE_FUSE=1 go test -race -count=1 on . and ./internal/filesystem/fuseadapter/... passes. The fuseadapter package passed three consecutive -race runs. golangci-lint reports 0 issues on the changed packages, and GOOS=darwin go vet is clean. CI on 6c60784 and 57241ff was green. On eba7347 (round 18) the fuseadapter -race run passed twice in a row, the root package, lint and the darwin vet are clean, and CI is green. On bea9aae (round 19): go test -race -count=1 ./adapter/... passes (247 s), the fuseadapter -race run passes, golangci-lint reports 0 issues, and GOOS=darwin go vet is clean. On 283bc3f (round 20): go test -race -count=1 ./adapter/... passes (252 s), golangci-lint reports 0 issues on adapter, and GOOS=darwin go vet ./adapter/ is clean. On 4a4c47c, ELASTICKV_REQUIRE_FUSE=1 go test -race -count=1 . passes and the fixed lifecycle test passes 3000 runs. On bbe0367 (round 21): go test -race -count=1 ./adapter/... passes (211 s), golangci-lint reports 0 issues on adapter, and GOOS=darwin go vet ./adapter/ is clean. Rounds 22 to 24: go test -race -count=1 ./adapter/... passes (239 s, 308 s and 232 s), ELASTICKV_REQUIRE_FUSE=1 go test -race -count=1 on . and ./internal/filesystem/fuseadapter/... passes, golangci-lint run --config=.golangci.yaml ./... reports 0 issues, and GOOS=darwin go vet is clean.

go vet ./... reports only the copylocks warnings in internal/raftengine/etcd/transportsoak/soak.go, a file this PR does not touch. Every pushed file was diffed against the validated local tree after each API push.

  • FUSE and main tests. go test -count=1 -race ./internal/filesystem/fuseadapter/ . ran with ELASTICKV_REQUIRE_FUSE=1 on every push, and again on each round's tree. Every run passed, including the kernel-mount tests. This environment has /dev/fuse but no fusermount3, so those tests run as root with DirectMount.

    • Signal handler. TestInstallShutdownSignalHandlerCancelsOnSignal sends the test process a real SIGTERM and checks the root context is cancelled. A second SIGTERM proves the registration is still held.

    • Signal stop unmounts. TestShutdownSignalUnmountsFilesystem mounts through mountFilesystemService plus installFilesystemServerLifecycle, writes a probe and sends SIGTERM. It then checks the errgroup returns clean, the serve loop stops, and the directory is bare again.

    • Busy mount. TestShutdownSignalWithOpenFileDetachesLazily holds a file open on the kernel mount and sends SIGTERM. The plain unmount fails with EBUSY, the shutdown finishes within the bounded wait, and the directory is bare once the handle closes.

    • Unmount failure paths. Five lifecycle tests use a fake server:

      • TestInstallFilesystemServerLifecycleDetachesLazilyWhenUnmountFails
      • ...BoundsWaitWhenServeLoopStalls
      • ...BoundsHungUnmount, where cleanup runs while the unmount is still stuck
      • ...WaitsForServeLoopAfterHungUnmount
      • ...CleanupBoundsHungUnmount
    • gRPC and admin stops.

      • TestStopGRPCServerBoundedForcesStopOnLongLivedStream holds a server stream open from a real client and requires the bounded stop to force it closed after the bound.
      • TestStopGRPCServerBoundedReturnsPromptlyWhenIdle checks that nothing is forced when the drain finishes.
      • TestGRPCServeReturnsOnlyAfterBoundedStop requires Serve to stay blocked while the drain is pending, and to return only after the bounded stop finished and the handler ended.
      • TestRegisterAdminLifecycleReturnsCleanAfterForcedClose runs the admin serve and shutdown tasks under an errgroup with a stalled request. After a cancel, Wait must return nil inside the bound with the request cut off.
      • TestTranslateAdminObjectsErrorMapsStoppingToNotLeader pins the 503 mapping.
    • Hung helpers and late mounts.

      • TestMountContextAbortsWhileMountHelperHangs forces the fusermount path with a fusermount3 stand-in that execs /bin/sleep. MountContext must return on the context deadline after really waiting on the helper.
      • TestDetachFUSEMountReachesKernelFallbackWhenHelperHangs does the same for the detach path, and requires the kernel fallback to be attempted inside the deadline.
      • TestDetachFUSEMountReachesKernelFallbackWhenHelpersHoldPipes installs both helper stand-ins, each leaving a background child on its output pipes. The fallback must still be reached inside the budget.
      • TestReleaseAbandonedMountReturns checks that the late-mount cleanup returns and leaves no mount.
      • TestReleaseAbandonedDetachesWhenUnmountHangs and TestReleaseAbandonedFallsBackOnlyWhenUnmountFails cover its bound and fallback with fakes.
      • TestMountContextTypeFollowsMountName checks the type the kernel lists for a mount whose Name differs from its FsName.
      • TestWaitMountStopsWhenCancelledWhileReadinessBlocks blocks the backend getattr of go-fuse's readiness check on a real mount. After a cancel, WaitMount must return context.Canceled, Unmount and Serve must return, and the mount must be gone.
    • Cancellation and bounded probes. Six tests cover this:

      • TestMountFilesystemServiceAbortsOnCancelledContext
      • TestMountContextAbortsWhenCancelled
      • TestDetachFUSEMountReportsCancellation
      • TestStaleFUSEMountProbeStopsOnCancellation
      • TestStaleFUSEMountProbeTimesOutOnWedgedServer
      • TestTopmostMountStopsWhenResolutionBlocks

A cancelled run context stops the mount path before and during the pre-mount work. A cancellation mid-detach keeps context.Canceled in the chain. A blocked liveness stat or a blocked parent-directory resolution is bounded.

    • Helper lookup and budget. TestLookupMountHelperFallsBackLikeGoFuse covers the PATH and /bin helper lookup. TestDetachHelperTimeoutSharesRemainingDeadline covers the helper budget, including the reserved pipe wait and the exhausted-share case.

    • Own-type guard.

      • TestDetachFUSEMountRefusesPathWithoutFUSEMount runs no helper and attempts no fallback in each of these cases: nothing mounted, ext4 on top, fuse.sshfs exposed, bare fuse, fuse.sshfs or tmpfs over a dead mount of ours, and table unavailable.
      • TestDetachFUSEMountRechecksBeforeKernelFallback: the helper makes the mount vanish, and the fallback is refused.
      • TestDetachFUSEMountRechecksBeforeSecondHelper: the first helper exposes a fuse.sshfs entry and fails, and the second helper must not run.
      • TestDetachAllReinspectsWhenMountVanishes.
      • TestFUSETypeFor: a custom Name is recognised, and the default is foreign to it.
      • The root-only TestDetachFUSEMountLeavesForeignMountAlone: a real tmpfs at the mount point survives the detach with the real mounts table.
    • Exit status. TestIgnoreCanceledAfterSignal is table-driven. It covers nil, canceled, wrapped canceled, an all-cancellation errors.Join, a join holding a real failure, and other errors, with and without the signal sentinel. The join holding a real failure must stay an error, and the test pins that plain errors. Is would have accepted it.

    • Stale-mount detection. TestStaleFUSEMountDetection is table-driven over fake mount tables:

      • Dead mounts: dead fuse.elastickv, and dead bare fuse and dead fuse.sshfs, which are not ours.
      • Live or other errors: live FUSE, and FUSE with EACCES.
      • Other filesystems: ext4, fuseblk, and no entry.
      • Stacking: non-FUSE stacked over dead FUSE, and dead FUSE stacked over tmpfs.
      • Malformed rows.

Further tests cover path handling and the detach loop:

      • Escaped paths (\040), symlinked parent directories, a symlinked mount point itself, and a relative symlink under a symlinked parent.
      • An unreadable table, which returns a typed error that detachAll skips with a warning.
      • Detach-until-clean, exactly the maximum succeeding, non-FUSE never detached, a wrapped detach failure, and the loop bound.
    • Recovery after a killed server. TestMountDetachesStaleMountLeftByKilledServer re-executes the test binary as a helper that mounts and blocks, then sends it SIGKILL. It waits for stat to return ENOTCONN, then calls Mount over the dangling mount and does file I/O. Log line observed: detached stale filesystem FUSE mount ... fs_type=fuse.elastickv method=umount(MNT_DETACH).

    • Clean unmount. TestKernelMountUnmountLeavesPlainDirectory guards against false positives after a clean unmount. It also requires UnmountLazy on the already unmounted directory to be a no-op.

  • go test -count=1 -race ./monitoring/. Passes.

    • TestShutdownHTTPServerForcesCloseAfterTimeout holds a request open. The helper must return nil after the bound, with the request cut off and Serve returned.
    • TestAuxiliaryShutdownTasksReturnNilAfterForcedClose is table-driven over the metrics and pprof task pairs. It does the same through the errgroup tasks main wires.
    • Idle and nil-server cases sit alongside.
  • go test -count=1 -race ./adapter/. The full package passes.

    • Stalled HTTP requests. TestHTTPAdapterStopBoundsStalledRequest is table-driven over the DynamoDB, S3 and SQS servers. It opens a request whose handler returns only on connection close, then calls Stop. Stop must return after the shortened bound but well before the request could finish, and the request must end with an error. Against the pre-fix Stop it hung until -timeout.
    • Idle and repeat stops. TestHTTPAdapterStopReturnsPromptlyWhenIdle covers an idle server. TestHTTPAdapterStopIsIdempotentAfterForcedClose covers a second Stop after a forced close.
    • S3 blob cluster.
      • TestS3ServerStopDrainsHTTPBeforeClosingBlobCluster and TestS3ServerStopWaitsForAdminObjectReadBeforeClosingBlobCluster hold a request, or an admin object read, open across Stop. The blob cluster must stay open while it runs and be closed once Stop returns.
      • TestS3ServerStopGivesUpOnUnclosedAdminReadAfterBound covers the bound.
    • Redis.
      • TestRedisServerStopWaitsForInflightCommandWithinBound installs a command whose handler never returns and issues it over a real connection. Stop must wait its bound, and the second Stop must be prompt.
      • TestRedisServerStopReturnsOnceInflightCommandFinishes requires the wait to end as soon as the command does.
      • TestRedisServerStopRejectsPipelinedCommandAfterDrain requires a command dispatched after the drain began to be refused without running.
      • TestRedisServerStopReturnsPromptlyWhenIdle covers the idle case.
    • SQS. adapter/sqs_shutdown_test.go covers the worker join, its bound and the refusal of late workers.
  • GOOS=darwin go vet. Passes on every round. The package did not compile for darwin after the first push. mount_e2e_test.go's Statfs_t.Namelen already failed there before this PR and is now tagged linux.

  • golangci-lint run --config=.golangci.yaml with v2.9.0, CI's pinned version. It reported 0 issues on the whole repo at the first push and on 5efa169. It reported 0 issues on the changed packages after each review round.

  • go test -count=1 -race ./... (first push). All packages pass except two pre-existing, environment-specific failures unrelated to this change:

    • TestFinalizeAsFSMFile_RenameFailureCleansUpSpool (internal/raftengine/etcd) relies on chmod 0500 making MkdirAll fail, which root ignores. This container runs as root.
    • TestRedis_MisskeyConnectionCompatibility (adapter) failed once under full-suite load and passes when run alone. It also passed in every later full adapter run.
  • Jepsen: not run. This change touches process lifecycle, the listeners' stop paths and the FUSE mount path only. The Redis change adds an atomic gate around each command and a wait in Stop, with no change to the semantics of an admitted command. There is no replication, MVCC or OCC change. The scheduled Jepsen filesystem and Redis workloads exercise the affected nodes end to end.

Self-review (five lenses)

  1. Data loss. No issues found.
    • New cleanup path. The signal path adds a cleanup path where previously there was none. The default disposition skipped CleanupStack, so the WAL sync in shardStore.Close never ran on SIGTERM. Nothing committed can now be lost that was not already lost before.

    • Startup ordering. Installing the handler before the runtimes open means a stop during open no longer kills the process mid-open. Both startup-failure branches now drain the errgroup before the stores close, which removes the close-under-running-workers windows on a signal during startup.

    • Bounded waits keep the cleanup. These waits always let the WAL sync and store close run afterwards:

      • the bounded gRPC drain
      • the bounded HTTP drains, for the adapters and the auxiliary listeners
      • the bounded Redis in-flight wait
      • the S3 admin object wait, the S3 background-cleanup join and the SQS worker join
      • the DynamoDB table-cleanup drain and join, and the 1 s join of the signal handler goroutine
      • the 2 s join of handlers on force-closed adapter connections
      • the bounded FUSE shutdown, including its CleanupStack entry and the cancellable readiness wait

A forced exit on a repeat signal was rejected for exactly that reason.

    • Forced stops. Forcing Stop after the gRPC bound closes streams whose clients retry (Raft transport, catalog watchers), as a crash would have. Forcing Close after an HTTP bound cuts a request that had not committed yet. The client sees a connection error and retries, and anything the request already committed stays committed. The cut happens only after the listener has waited its bound for the request to finish on its own. The metrics, pprof and admin listeners never write to the store.

    • Redis. A Redis command that outlives its bound is in the same position as a cut HTTP request. A command that finishes inside the bound now commits before the stores close instead of racing their close. A command refused after the drain began never reached the store.

    • S3 and SQS. The S3 blob cluster now outlives the HTTP drain and the admin object operations, so a transfer inside the window completes its peer replication instead of failing. The S3 background cleanups finish, or are cancelled after the bound, before the blob cluster and the stores close, so an orphan delete either commits or is left for the next GC pass. The SQS reaper and sweep finish their pass before the stores close.

    • Stale-mount detach. It runs only on a dead mount of this server's own type. All filesystem state is in the store, so detaching discards nothing, and open-handle leases are reaped as before. A foreign filesystem at the path is never detached.

    • Cancelled readiness wait. The requests it cancels belong to a startup that is being abandoned. The only one in flight is the readiness check's getattr, a read.

    • Aborted intent recovery. Aborting intent recovery on cancellation leaves the intents for the next startup's recovery pass, which is the existing crash-recovery contract.

    • Untouched. No change to Raft propose/apply, FSM, snapshots, Pebble sync or TTL paths.

  2. Concurrency / distributed failures. No issues found beyond the accepted gaps.
    • Handler goroutine. It exits only via stopCh. stop is a sync.OnceFunc that calls signal.Stop before closing stopCh and then waits on done for at most 1 s. There is no deadlock, because cancel() is non-blocking and the handler cancels before it logs, and a log write that never returns cannot hold the end of the shutdown.
    • Racing cancels. signalShutdown is an atomic with CAS, so memwatch and a signal racing both call cancel() idempotently, and memoryPressureExit is still checked first in main. The handler is registered in CleanupStack before the store/runtime closers, which run LIFO, so it is still swallowing repeat signals while they run.
    • gRPC. stopGRPCServerBounded relies on grpc-go's documented behaviour that Stop may be called concurrently with GracefulStop and makes it return. Serve returns only after the stop completed, which a test pins.
    • HTTP. monitoring.ShutdownHTTPServer relies on two documented net/http behaviours: Shutdown and Close may be called concurrently, and Close empties the active-connection set.
      • main calls Stop twice on each adapter: once from the context waiter and once deferred after Run returns. The two calls cannot block each other. Whichever times out first closes the connections, and the other's Shutdown then returns at once (TestHTTPAdapterStopIsIdempotentAfterForcedClose).
      • The auxiliary listeners have a single shutdown task each.
    • inflightGate. It uses an atomic counter, atomic draining and drained flags, and a once-closed channel.
      • enter increments before it reads the draining flag, and drain stores the flag before it reads the count. Under Go's sequentially consistent atomics, either the drain observes the operation or the operation observes the drain and backs out. A late pipelined command or admin operation therefore can never run unobserved.
      • An exit that reaches zero after the drain started signals it, and a count already at zero is observed by the drain itself.
      • The first drain and the first join each fix a deadline under a sync.Once. A concurrent Stop waits until that same deadline, and a later one reports at once, so the errgroup-tracked call never returns while the other is still waiting.
    • httpConnTracker. It counts a connection on StateNew and releases it on StateClosed or StateHijacked, through a sync.Map so each connection is released once. Serve has returned before the join starts, so no connection is counted after it.
    • backgroundWorkers. A DynamoDB table delete reserves its cleanup slot in the gate before it commits. A reservation is either started or released exactly once, and Stop waits for reserved slots as for running jobs, so a committed delete always gets its cleanup.
    • S3 cleanups. startCleanup takes the semaphore, then enters the gate, and releases the semaphore if the gate refuses. The worker exits the gate before it releases the semaphore. The cleanup context is cancelled only after the drain has waited, so a cleanup inside the bound is never cut. A cleanup cancelled at the bound is joined, under its own short bound, before the blob cluster closes; the one-shot join uses a CAS so only the first Stop waits.
    • sqsWorkers. It guards its WaitGroup with a mutex and refuses new workers once stopping, so wg.Go never races Wait.
    • filesystemUnmounter. It starts the unmount with a CAS and publishes its result through a closed channel, which gives err a happens-before edge. Neither the lifecycle nor the cleanup entry can block on the in-flight call.
    • Cancelled readiness wait. Server.WaitMount waits on go-fuse's readiness check in a goroutine. On cancellation it cancels the server-wide request context first, so the handler answers the kernel. It runs go-fuse's Unmount only after the check has returned, because go-fuse's Unmount writes the mount point the check reads. released is closed once, under a sync.Once, and is read only through channel operations.
    • Late mounts. newServerContext publishes the mount result through a buffered channel. The late-arrival goroutine serves and unmounts what the caller abandoned, under a bound, because go-fuse's Unmount needs the serve loop to be running to return.
    • Startup detach. detachStaleMount runs once, synchronously, before fuse.NewServer. The stale verdict is re-derived immediately before each detach, and the type is re-checked before each later helper and before the kernel fallback.
    • Bounded operations. Each of these is bounded by a timeout and by the run context:
      • the helper lookup and invocation, each with half the remaining deadline and the pipe wait included
      • the liveness stat
      • the parent-directory resolution
      • the kernel mount and its readiness wait
      • the unmount
    • Leaked goroutines. A stat, resolution, mount or unmount blocked on a wedged daemon, hung helper or stuck backend request leaks one goroutine until the kernel returns it. That is documented and unavoidable, and the process exits shortly afterwards. The resolution goroutine captures its function value before starting, so a later swap of the package variable cannot race it.
    • Tests. The accepted gaps are documented above, and all tests pass under -race.
  3. Performance. No issues found.
    • Startup-only work. One read of /proc/self/mounts, one stat and one path resolution, each in a goroutine. At most 40 Readlink hops, each with one parent EvalSymlinks. The mount itself runs in a goroutine per Mount.
    • Shutdown-only work. One goroutine and timer per gRPC server for its bound, one timeout context per HTTP listener stop, and one timer each for the Redis, S3 admin, S3 cleanup and SQS worker waits. Each S3 cleanup start gains two atomic operations and a child context, off the request path.
    • Hot paths.
      • Redis. Each command gains two atomic operations and one atomic load, with no lock and no allocation.
      • S3 admin. Each object operation, including deletes, gains the same, plus one closure for the read body.
      • HTTP adapters. Each connection gains one sync.Map store and delete and two atomic operations; requests on it add nothing.
      • FUSE. Request contexts now derive from a server-wide parent instead of context.Background(), which only registers each child with that parent.
    • Nothing else. Nothing else changes on any request path. There are no extra Raft round-trips and no new metrics. The signal goroutine is idle until a signal arrives.
  4. Data consistency. No issues found.
    • Untouched. No change to MVCC visibility, OCC, HLC or routing.
    • One new decision. The only decision added is whether the topmost mount at this path is a dead mount of this server's type. It is derived from the kernel's mount table plus ENOTCONN, never from the wall clock. The probe, resolution, drain and shutdown timeouts are liveness bounds on local operations, not ordering decisions.
    • Adapter contracts. Cutting an HTTP request or a Redis command after the bound is equivalent to the client's connection dropping at that point, a case every listener already has to tolerate. A refused Redis command gets an error reply and has no effect. A stopping S3 node answers admin object calls the way a follower does.
  5. Test coverage.
    • Signal handling and exit status. A signal cancels, a repeat signal is held, a stop without a signal works, and the canceled mapping, including joined errors, is table-driven.
    • gRPC drain. A long-lived stream is forced closed, an idle server is untouched, and Serve waits for the stop.
    • HTTP drains. On each of the three adapters: a stalled request cut off, an idle server, and a second Stop after a forced close. On the metrics, pprof and admin listeners, through their errgroup tasks: the forced close returns nil and the request is cut off.
    • S3. The blob cluster closes after the drain and after an admin object read. An admin delete in flight holds Stop until it finished and its cleanup ran, and a later one is refused. The admin read is abandoned after the bound. A stopping node maps to the 503. A background cleanup holds Stop until it finishes, is cancelled after the bound and then joined, holds Stop no longer than the join when it ignores the cancel, and is refused once Stop has begun.
    • Redis drain. A never-finishing command is bounded, a finishing command ends the wait, a pipelined command after the drain is refused, the idle case returns, and a second Stop is prompt. The gate refuses entry once draining and the drain waits for a running operation.
    • SQS. The worker join, the refusal of late workers, and concurrent Stop calls sharing the join.
    • DynamoDB. Table cleanups are joined and cancelled after the bound, a reservation holds Stop, an admin delete after Stop began is refused before it commits, and the stopping error maps to 503 on both the public and admin surfaces.
    • inflightGate. Concurrent drains and joins share one deadline.
    • Abandoned-mount release. One shared 10 s window, the bounded lazy detach, the skipped unmount past its deadline, and the cancellation of in-flight requests on a real late mount.
    • Signal handler. It cancels before a blocked log write, and its stop does not wait on that write.
    • HTTP handler join. On each adapter, a handler still unwinding after the forced close holds Stop, and one that never returns holds it for the join bound only.
    • Cancellation of the mount path. A cancelled run context aborts the mount path before the pre-mount work, during it, during the kernel mount (with a hung-helper stand-in that really hangs), and during the readiness wait on a real mount.
    • Late-mount release. It returns, is bounded, and falls back only on failure.
    • Detach fallback. A hung helper gives way to the kernel fallback. Two hung helpers holding their pipes still give way inside the budget.
    • Probes. The liveness probe and the parent-directory resolution, including their timeouts.
    • Own-type guard, before each helper and before the fallback. The cases are:
      • nothing mounted
      • a foreign filesystem, or a foreign FUSE subtype
      • a bare fuse mount
      • a stacked mount
      • the table unavailable
      • the mount vanishing mid-detach, before the second helper or before the fallback
      • a real tmpfs, as root
      • the type built from Name on a real mount
    • Shutdown unmount, with a fake server. The busy-mount lazy detach, a stalled serve loop, a blocked unmount with cleanup still stuck, the serve loop ending inside the reserved slice after a hung unmount, and the cleanup-only path.
    • Shutdown unmount, on a kernel mount. The real EBUSY case.
    • Helper lookup and budget. The lookup fallback, with the fallback directory isolated in tests. The budget: shares, the reserved pipe wait, an exhausted share, and an expired deadline.
    • Mount-table parsing and the stale decision. Table-driven, including never touching non-FUSE, foreign subtypes, stacked mounts, a symlinked mount point, a relative symlink under a symlinked parent, an unavailable table, and a custom Name.
    • Detach loop. Success, exactly the maximum, failure wrapping, the bound, and a vanished mount.
    • End to end. A real SIGTERM unmounts through the production lifecycle. A real SIGKILLed helper leaves a dangling mount, and Mount recovers it.
    • Skips. Kernel-mount tests skip without /dev/fuse and fail under ELASTICKV_REQUIRE_FUSE=1, matching the existing convention.
    • Not covered.
      • fusermount3 -u -z itself against a real mount. There is no real helper in this environment, and the E2E tests exercised the unmount(MNT_DETACH) fallback branch instead.
      • A FUSE mount owned by another user.
      • A real foreign FUSE filesystem under the mount point. Fake tables and a tmpfs cover it.
      • A genuinely wedged FUSE daemon or outer filesystem on a kernel mount. Blocking fakes cover it in unit tests.
      • A readiness check whose backend request ignores its context. On a real mount it would deadlock the test process itself, so only the bounded fallback's code path covers it.
      • The non-Linux lazyUnmount stub, beyond compiling.
      • The signal-during-runtime-open ordering. It is a block move, and the handler itself is tested.
      • The two startup-error drain paths end to end. The drain helper itself is exercised by its existing callers' tests.
      • The HTTP and Redis bounds through main's run*Server wiring. The adapters' Stop methods are what changed, and they are tested directly.
      • A real Redis command blocked on Raft during Stop. A blocking test command covers it in unit tests.

The server installed no signal handler, so SIGTERM/SIGINT ended the
process through Go's default disposition: the errgroup never unwound,
the CleanupStack never synced the WAL, and a --filesystemMount stayed
attached to a dead server ("Transport endpoint is not connected"). A
restart over that mount then failed in fusermount3 with "failed to
access mountpoint", leaving operators to run fusermount3 -uz by hand.

main: installShutdownSignalHandler forwards SIGTERM/SIGINT into the root
context's cancel, so a signal stop takes the same path the memory
watchdog uses (installFilesystemServerLifecycle unmounts, listeners
drain, WAL syncs). The first signal cancels; repeats while the shutdown
runs are logged and ignored, and the registration stays in place until
the store/runtime closers have run so a supervisor's second SIGTERM
cannot cut the cleanup short. A context.Canceled surfaced by the
errgroup after a signal maps to exit status 0; the memory watchdog's
exit status 2 is unchanged. filesystemStartConfig gains a test-only
mountOptions field so the kernel-mount tests can mount directly as root.

fuseadapter: Mount now detaches a dangling FUSE mount at the mount point
before mounting. A mount is only treated as stale when the topmost entry
for the path in /proc/self/mounts has type fuse or fuse.* and stat on
the path fails with ENOTCONN; a live FUSE mount, any other filesystem,
or a non-FUSE mount stacked over a dead one is never touched. Detaching
uses the helpers go-fuse's own unmount uses, fusermount3/fusermount
-u -z, and falls back to a lazy unmount(2) (umount -l) when no helper is
available, logging the mount point, type and mechanism.

Tests: a real SIGTERM to the test process cancels the root context and
unmounts a kernel mount through the production lifecycle; the detection
logic is table-driven over fake mount tables (FUSE/non-FUSE, stacked,
live, escaped paths, symlinked parents, loop bound); and an end-to-end
test SIGKILLs a helper process holding a mount, waits for ENOTCONN, and
mounts over the dangling mount it left behind.

docs/filesystem.md is carried over from the open "docs: add FUSE
filesystem guide" pull request so its sections can be updated here:
"Stopping and restarting" now describes the SIGTERM/SIGINT graceful stop
and that a restart detaches a dead mount itself, the startup sequence
gains the stale-mount check, the troubleshooting rows for "Transport
endpoint is not connected" point at a restart instead of a manual
fusermount3 -uz, and "Verifying a build" names the new tests. The README
sentence in "Working with the FUSE filesystem" says the same.

P2 Badge Serialize stale-mount recovery before detaching

When two replacement processes start against the same stale mount, both can observe ENOTCONN; if the first process detaches and establishes its new mount before the second reaches this path-based detach, the second process will lazily unmount the first process's healthy filesystem. The stale check and unmount need serialization across server processes or an identity check that ensures the mount being detached is still the one that was inspected.

Not changing this one, leaving the call to the maintainer. The path needs two server processes configured with the same --filesystemMount on one host starting within the window between one process's stat returning ENOTCONN and its unmount(2) (microseconds; the inspection runs immediately before each detach, not once up front). Two servers on one mount point is already an unsupported configuration: before this PR the second would stack a mount over the first, and go-fuse's own fusermount -u unmount is path-based in the same way. A cross-process lock or a mount-ID identity check (via /proc/self/mountinfo) would still leave a smaller TOCTOU and adds a parser and a lock file for a misconfiguration case, so I think it costs more than it buys. Happy to add the mountinfo identity check if you want it.

Review findings from CodeRabbit and Codex on the signal/stale-mount change,
each with a regression test:

- main: a signal (or any failure) during startDistributionStartup returned
before the errgroup was drained, so the deferred CleanupStack could close
the stores while the TSO reloader, raft lifecycle watchers and the
registration gate were still running. Route that branch through
waitErrgroupAfterStartupFailure like the other startup failures.
- main: ignoreCanceledAfterSignal accepted any error for which
  errors.Is(err, context.Canceled) held, which includes the errors.Join
that waitErrgroupAfterStartupFailure builds from a cancellation plus a
real drain failure, so a genuine failure could exit 0 after SIGTERM.
onlyContextCanceled walks joined errors and accepts a join only when
  every branch is a cancellation.
- fuseadapter: an unreadable /proc/self/mounts (chroot or minimal
container without /proc) failed Mount outright. The stale check now
logs a warning and is skipped, so /proc is not a new mount
prerequisite; the real mount still reports any conflict.
- fuseadapter: exactly maxStaleMountDetaches stacked dead mounts were
detached and then reported as "more than" the maximum. The loop now
re-inspects after the last allowed detach and errors only when a mount
  is still there.
- fuseadapter: a --filesystemMount that is itself a symlink was never
matched, because the kernel records the symlink's target in the mounts
table. The final component is now resolved with Lstat/Readlink, which
never traverse into the (dead) mounted target.
- docs: the startup sequence listed intent recovery before the stale-mount
check; Mount runs the check first. Swapped and noted the /proc fallback.

…elative mount symlinks

Second-round review findings, each with a regression test:

- fuseadapter: Mount ran the stale-mount detach and the intent recovery on
background contexts, so a SIGTERM that arrived while the filesystem was
still starting could not interrupt a hung fusermount helper, an
unavailable leader, or a long recovery backlog while the signal handler
swallowed repeat signals. MountContext takes the caller's context: it
aborts before any work when already cancelled, bounds the detach
helper, and derives the recovery timeout from it. Mount keeps its
signature as MountContext with a background context. main passes the
  run context through mountFilesystemService.
- fuseadapter: a relative symlink target was joined to the parent as
  typed, so /base/link/mp with link -> /base/real/deep and mp -> ../target
resolved to /base/target while the kernel mounts on /base/real/target
and the stale mount was never matched. Relative targets are now joined
to the canonical (symlink-resolved) parent, which is never the mount
  point itself.

… failure, keep cancellation in detach

Third-round review findings:

- fuseadapter: syscall.MNT_DETACH is Linux-only, so the package stopped
compiling on macOS, which the repository's documented `go test ./...`
workflow relies on. The lazy unmount(2) fallback now lives in
stale_mount_linux.go behind a build tag, with a !linux counterpart that
reports the fallback as unavailable (the fusermount helpers remain the
detach mechanism there). The kernel-mount E2E tests, which drive
  /dev/fuse and read Linux statfs fields, are tagged linux as well;
`GOOS=darwin go vet` of the package and of main passes.
- main: a filesystem startup failure returned straight out of
startServersAfterStartupRotation while the public services were already
serving on the errgroup, so the deferred CleanupStack could close the
stores under running workers; with MountContext a shutdown signal during
the pre-mount work reaches this branch as context.Canceled. The error now
drains the errgroup through waitErrgroupAfterStartupFailure like every
other startup failure. Extracted into startFilesystemAfterServing to
  stay within the cyclomatic budget.
- fuseadapter: when the parent context was cancelled while a fusermount
helper ran, the code fell through to the privileged unmount, whose EPERM
(for an unprivileged server) replaced the cancellation in the error
chain and turned an operator-requested stop into exit status 1.
  detachFUSEMount now returns the context error before the fallback;
  TestDetachFUSEMountReportsCancellation pins it.

…top on a busy mount

Fourth-round review findings:

- fuseadapter: the liveness stat on a mount the table reports as FUSE
blocks for as long as a still-connected but wedged FUSE server stays
wedged, and nothing interrupts the syscall, so a shutdown signal could
not stop MountContext there. The stat now runs in its own goroutine and
only the wait is bounded: by ctx (cancellation surfaces as a
  *mountProbeError wrapping context.Canceled) and by a 10 s probe
timeout (a live but unresponsive server is not ours to detach; startup
fails with a clear error rather than hanging in fusermount's own stat).
The detach loop treats a probe error as "no verdict" and stops.
- main: when Unmount failed during a signal shutdown (EBUSY: a client
still held files open), installFilesystemServerLifecycle waited on the
serve loop forever while the handler swallowed repeat signals, so an
ordinary SIGTERM could only be finished by SIGKILL. The lifecycle now
  falls back to Server.UnmountLazy (fusermount -u -z / lazy unmount(2):
open handles keep working until closed, new lookups see the plain
directory) and bounds the wait for the serve loop by
filesystemServeStopTimeout (10 s) before letting the rest of the
shutdown (WAL sync, store close) run. Process exit closes /dev/fuse and
the kernel drops whatever the lazy detach left behind. The lifecycle
takes a small interface so the failure paths are unit-tested with a
  fake; TestShutdownSignalWithOpenFileDetachesLazily drives the real
EBUSY case on a kernel mount.
- docs: stopping section describes the busy-mount behaviour; a
troubleshooting row covers the probe timeout.

…on off the FUSE mount

Fifth-round review findings:

- main: go-fuse's Server.Unmount waits for its event loops after the
kernel unmount, and a loop stuck in a backend request (leader
unavailable) never returns, so the shutdown bound added last round was
never reached. stopFilesystemServer now runs the unmount in its own
goroutine under one shutdown budget (filesystemServeStopTimeout): when
it does not return in time the mount is detached lazily and the
shutdown continues; the serve-loop wait shares the same budget.
  TestInstallFilesystemServerLifecycleBoundsHungUnmount drives it with a
  fake whose Unmount blocks.
- fuseadapter: resolveMountPointSymlinks used Lstat on the mount point,
which is a getattr through whatever FUSE mount covers the path and so
blocks on a live but wedged server before the bounded probe runs.
Readlink alone answers EINVAL for a non-symlink from the dentry type
without a FUSE request, so Lstat is dropped; the existing resolution
tests cover the symlink, non-symlink and missing-path cases.
- docs: the stopping section says the 10 s budget covers the unmount too.

Sixth-round review finding: the CleanupStack entry called the same
sync.OnceValue-wrapped Unmount the lifecycle had started, and a second
call waits for the in-flight one, so an unmount stuck in a backend
request still blocked cleanup.Run (WAL sync, store close, process exit)
after the lifecycle had already given up and detached lazily. The test
masked it by releasing the fake before running cleanup.

filesystemUnmounter starts the unmount once in the background and lets
any waiter observe completion through a closed channel; the lifecycle
waits on it within its budget and marks the stop handled, and the
cleanup entry skips when handled or otherwise waits bounded. The hung
unmount test now runs cleanup while the unmount is still stuck, and a
new test covers the cleanup-only path.

…lier signal handler, go-fuse helper lookup

Seventh-round review findings:

- main: the lazy detach after a hung unmount opened a fresh 10 s context,
so the FUSE shutdown could take 20 s against the documented 10 s total.
stopFilesystemServer now runs everything under one budget: the plain
unmount gets 4/5 of it, the lazy detach and the serve-loop wait the
  remainder of the same context.
- fuseadapter: fuse.NewServer waits on the fusermount helper with no
context (callFusermount does proc.Wait), so a hung helper blocked
MountContext, the errgroup drain and the WAL sync behind it even after
a signal. newServerContext runs it in a goroutine and returns on
cancellation; a mount that completes after the caller gave up is
  unmounted again. TestMountContextAbortsWhileMountHelperHangs puts a
fusermount3 stand-in that sleeps on PATH and checks the cancel wins.
- main: the root context and the signal handler were installed after
buildShardGroupsWithEncryptionWiring, so a SIGTERM during a slow open
or snapshot restore still killed the process through the default
disposition. They are now installed before the runtimes open; the stop
cancels ctx and startup unwinds through the normal path once the
  runtimes exist.
- fuseadapter: the detacher looked up fusermount3/fusermount on PATH only,
while go-fuse also falls back to /bin, so a service with a restricted
PATH could mount but not detach. lookupMountHelper mirrors go-fuse's
  lookup; TestLookupMountHelperFallsBackLikeGoFuse covers PATH, fallback
  and PATH precedence.

… MountContext

Eighth-round review finding: when cancellation won the select but
fuse.NewServer later succeeded, the late cleanup called Unmount without
Serve. go-fuse's NewServer adds the event loop to its wait group and
Unmount waits for that group, while only Serve runs the loop that
releases it, so the cleanup goroutine, the server and the /dev/fuse
descriptor were retained for the life of the process.

releaseAbandonedMount starts Serve, unmounts (the loop exits once the
kernel unmount closes the connection), and falls back to the lazy detach
when the unmount fails. TestReleaseAbandonedMountReturns mounts for real,
hands the server over the same channel, and requires the release to
return and the mount table to be clean.

P2 Badge Terminate the mount helper when cancellation wins

When fusermount3 actually hangs and ctx is cancelled, this branch returns but merely starts another goroutine that waits forever for results; it never terminates the helper or the goroutine blocked in fuse.NewServer. Go-fuse starts the helper with os.StartProcess and waits using an unbounded proc.Wait() (go-fuse v2.11.0 source), so an exiting server can leave the child orphaned, while a non-exiting MountContext caller can accumulate both child processes and goroutines across retries. Fresh evidence beyond the earlier cancellation finding is that the current cleanup path blocks on <-results> and therefore cannot clean up a helper that never produces that result.

Not changing this one, leaving the call to the maintainer. go-fuse starts the helper inside fuse.NewServer and exposes neither the process nor a context, so from this package the only ways to terminate it would be scanning /proc for a child named fusermount3 and signalling it, or re-implementing go-fuse's mount path; both cost more than they buy here. In this codebase MountContext runs once per process at startup, and a cancellation means the process is exiting: the goroutine ends with the process, and an orphaned helper is reparented to init and reaped when it exits, which is the same outcome as before this PR (where the hung helper blocked startup instead). The late-mount cleanup still unmounts a mount that completes after the caller gave up, so no kernel mount leaks. I have noted this as an accepted gap in the PR description; if a long-lived caller that retries MountContext appears, a bounded wait plus a /proc scan can be added then.

…unt helper hangs

Ninth-round review finding: detachFUSEMount gave each fusermount helper
the caller's whole remaining deadline, so a helper that hung until the
budget expired made the cancellation check return before the privileged
unmount(2) fallback, and a CAP_SYS_ADMIN server could exit after SIGTERM
with the disconnected mount still attached.

detachHelperTimeout now gives one helper invocation the smaller of
detachCommandTimeout and half of what is left of the caller's deadline,
and the killed helper's pipes are waited on for at most 500 ms
(exec.Cmd.WaitDelay), so the fallback still runs inside the budget.
TestDetachFUSEMountReachesKernelFallbackWhenHelperHangs puts a stand-in
on PATH that execs /bin/sleep, gives the detach a 400 ms deadline, and
requires the error to come from the fallback rather than the deadline
after the helper was given its share. The earlier hung-helper mount
test's stand-in is fixed the same way: with PATH pointed at the stand-in
directory a bare `sleep` was not found, so it had not been hanging; both
tests now also assert they really waited on the helper.

…ung unmount

Tenth-round review findings:

- main: GracefulStop blocks until every in-flight RPC ends, and the
long-lived streams (catalog watches, the Raft transport's SendStream)
only end when their client disconnects, so on a multi-node server a
SIGTERM could wait forever in startRaftServers while repeat signals
were swallowed, and the WAL sync and store close never ran until
SIGKILL. stopGRPCServerBounded drains for at most
grpcGracefulStopTimeout (10 s) and then calls Stop, which closes the
remaining streams and lets the pending GracefulStop return.
  TestStopGRPCServerBoundedForcesStopOnLongLivedStream opens a stream
whose handler only returns when its context ends and requires the stop
to return after the bound; an idle-server test checks nothing is forced
when GracefulStop finishes on its own.
- main: after a hung unmount the lifecycle detached lazily and returned at
once, skipping the reserved remainder of the budget, so a backend
request that would have finished inside the advertised 10 s could still
be cut off by the store close. The timeout branch now falls through to
the same serve-loop wait as the normal branch.
  TestInstallFilesystemServerLifecycleWaitsForServeLoopAfterHungUnmount
requires the loop ending to be observed inside the reserved slice.
- docs: the stopping section mentions the bounded gRPC drain.

Pushed the shutdown cleanup reservation fixes and incorporated current main. Both current inline findings are addressed with regression coverage. Scoped adapter shutdown tests pass normally and under race; scoped lint passed before the main toolchain update, and the Go 1.27-compatible lint rerun is in progress. Audited reservation users and S3 admin cleanup callers. #1291 incorporates this branch rather than duplicating these fixes. @codex review

HEAD 4bc0239 consolidates common FUSE/admin shutdown safety in #1273, with #1279 and #1291 consuming the shared implementation. Incorporated latest fetched main 4c28eda, retaining both SQS shutdown workers and new admin audit fields. Reaper regressions and strict filesystem harness remain unchanged from main. Scoped race tests pass; Linux lint found one unchanged-main issue at adapter/sqs_admin_peek.go:211 (cyclop 11 > 10), reported to the parent rather than duplicated outside this scope. @codex review

Lint clarification: the prior AdminPeekQueue cyclop result came from an unfiltered local full-file run and is unchanged main code. CI uses --new-from-rev=origin/main; a local Linux run with that same diff filter now reports 0 issues. Current-head CI remains the authoritative result.

Current HEAD: cd05729 (signed, bootjp). Fixed the current P1/P2 shutdown findings: cancel backend request contexts after successful ordinary unmount, join abandoned mount cleanup within its budget, and invalidate cleanup reservations after the final join. Merged latest main 1dc9763; preserved parent reaper and strict filesystem checker fixes. Audited all changed callers with rg. Validation: full portable FUSE race PASS, focused shutdown race x3 PASS, Linux cross-compile PASS, Linux diff-filtered lint 0 issues. Final post-integration race/CI checks are ongoing. Bounded shutdown does not promise durable cleanup recovery for commits later than both drain bounds. Please review this exact HEAD. @codex review

ℹ️ About Codex security reviews in GitHub

This is an experimental Codex feature. Security reviews are triggered when:

  • You comment "@codex security review"
  • A regular code review gets triggered (for example, "@codex review" or when a PR is opened), and you’re opted in so security review runs alongside code review

Once complete, Codex will leave suggestions, or a comment if no findings are found.
