A11Y-13909: forward the Test Observability collector to the remote reporter - #1210
The Test Observability reporter (bin/testObservability/reporter) runs on the BrowserStack machine, from that machine's own install of this package, and bin/testObservability/helper/constants.js hard-coded the collector to https://collector-observability.browserstack.com. When the cli that created the build points at any other collector, the machine's per-test TestRunStarted / TestRunFinished events still went to prod, and the build's real collector never received them.
Downstream on a staging environment: every test case in TestHub stayed nameless (name, filename, cbt_platform NULL), and Accessibility, which keys test cases on those fields, collapsed an entire spec into one page. A11Y-13909 was a 5-URL Cypress spec recording 1 of 5.
Change
constants.js: API_URL becomes apiUrl(), read when a request is built rather than at module load. remoteReporterApiUrl() prefers BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_REMOTE_API_URL, for the case where the machine cannot reach the cli's own collector (a private staging ingress), and otherwise falls back to it. An override must parse as a URL, be https:, have a hostname, and carry no query or fragment; errors never echo the value, since it can carry credentials and callers log them.
helper.js and crashReporter/index.js call apiUrl() per request. nodeRequest rejects rather than throws on a bad value: its executor is async, so a throw there would never reach the returned promise.
utils.js#setSystemEnvs forwards the resolved URL as BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_API_URL in system_env_vars — the same channel BS_TESTOPS_JWT and BS_TESTOPS_BUILD_HASHED_ID already travel on, which the machine writes into the Cypress process environment before the reporter loads.
utils.js#validateCollectorUrls, called at runs.js:136, checks both overrides before TestHubHandler.launchBuild, so a malformed value fails before a build exists.
With neither variable set the forwarded value is the previous constant, so prod behaviour is unchanged. Older packages on the machine ignore the variable.
Tests
Nine cases in test/unit/bin/helpers/utils.js covering the forwarded value: default, general override, remote override preferred, non-https rejected, query or fragment rejected, bare delimiter normalised, trailing slash trimmed. Three in test/unit/bin/testObservability/collectorUrl.js covering the request destination itself: the override reaches nodeRequest, the default applies when unset, and a bad value surfaces on use rather than at module load.
Full suite run on this branch and on master: the 16 pre-existing failures are identical on both.
Validation
Run on a BrowserStack staging environment (rengg-regression-6-nov-25), 5-URL Cypress spec, Chrome 148 on OS X Monterey, this branch installed on the machine.
Before — TestHub test cases for the same spec:
name=NULL filename=NULL cbt_platform=NULL (x5)
Accessibility: 5 test cases, 1 distinct signature, 1 page reported. Report: Rule Type Check: FAILED — Missing: TYPE_B2, TYPE_C2.
After — same spec, same environment:
Full page scan [1] .../all/index.html e2e/scanURL.cy.js passed OS X,Monterey Chrome,148
Full page scan [2] .../all/typec.html e2e/scanURL.cy.js passed OS X,Monterey Chrome,148

Full page scan [5] .../all/typeA.html e2e/scanURL.cy.js passed OS X,Monterey Chrome,148
10 of 10 test cases named and attributed (5 tests plus 5 after each hooks). Accessibility: 5 test cases, 5 distinct signatures. Report: Rule Type Check: All rule types detected (A, B1, B2, C1, C2, AI).
Related PRs, in merge order: common-infra-ops#4442 (DNS), release-engineering-infra-ops#2937 (the public ingress the machine can reach), this PR, then browserstack-cd#26425 (passes the host on rengg).
Configure custom API and remote collector URLs for test observability. Remote reporting uses the remote URL when configured; other observability requests use the API URL or the default collector.
Bug Fixes
Collector URL settings are validated before a run proceeds. Configured URLs must use HTTPS and cannot include credentials, query parameters, or fragments.
A warning appears when a remote collector URL is set without an API URL, since the built-in collector and remote reporter may target different environments.
The reporter that sends TestRunStarted/TestRunFinished runs on the BrowserStack machine from its own install of this package, which has the prod collector hard-coded. Against any other collector (staging environments) those events never arrive, so TestHub keeps nameless test cases and Accessibility collapses every test in a spec into one. Make API_URL overridable via BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_API_URL and forward the launching cli's effective collector in system_env_vars, the same channel BS_TESTOPS_JWT already uses. Prod behaviour is unchanged.

On staging the collector the cli talks to is a private ingress the BrowserStack machine cannot reach, while the machine-facing public ingress is a different host. BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_REMOTE_API_URL, when set, is what gets forwarded to the machine; otherwise the cli's own collector is forwarded as before. Read at call time so the tests need no module reloads.

Walkthrough
Observability collector URLs can come from a remote override, a general API override, or the default URL. Configured URLs are validated, and the selected URL is used for reporter environment setup and observability requests.
Changes: Observability URL configuration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Validate and select collector URLs bin/testObservability/helper/constants.js, test/unit/bin/testObservability/collectorUrl.js, test/unit/bin/helpers/utils.js
The constants module validates HTTPS URL overrides and selects the general API URL or remote reporter URL. Tests cover URL selection, validation, normalization, and collector requests.
Validate and forward collector URLs bin/commands/runs.js, bin/helpers/utils.js, test/unit/bin/helpers/utils.js
run validates configured URLs. setSystemEnvs forwards the selected remote reporter URL. Tests cover forwarding and validation warnings.
Use the selected API URL for observability requests bin/testObservability/helper/helper.js, bin/testObservability/crashReporter/index.js
Observability requests and crash reports use the selected API URL. The request helper rejects invalid URL configuration before sending a request.
Debug logs can expose credentials embedded in collector URL paths. Redact the forwarded URL before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 8513d
The new collector handoff can expose secret-bearing URL paths in debug output. HTTPS validation and early configuration checks provide useful safeguards, but remote reporter compatibility and collector environment alignment remain unverified.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · observed: The newly forwarded collector URL enters the complete system-environment debug log without redaction. A permitted token-bearing pathname therefore becomes visible to console or retained CI-log readers when debug logging is enabled. Value-free validation errors and the host-only warning do not protect this later logging path.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The supported disclosure scenario concerns the configured collector URL's pathname and readers of that run's debug output. Any further access depends on the embedded token's authority. The evidence does not establish cross-tenant compromise, fleet-wide exposure or additional infrastructure privileges.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — A configured token-bearing pathname survives URL normalization, enters system_env_vars and reaches the unredacted console logger when --cli-debug or DEBUG=true enables debug output. The logger existed at the base; automatic inclusion of this collector value is new. The canonical candidate remains deferred for its missing verification receipt.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
inferred — Control over the override environment grants destination-selection authority for existing credential-bearing requests. No public or lower-trust route to that environment control was established, so arbitrary-host acceptance alone is not treated as a demonstrated privilege escalation. Deployment restrictions and effective redirect behavior remain unknown.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Keep secret-bearing collector paths out of environment diagnostics by redacting the forwarded URL value or displaying only its host, consistent with the existing host-only warning.

… tests
Review feedback on browserstack#1210. Collector requests carry BS_TESTOPS_JWT, so an http:// override would send it in cleartext: reject such a value instead of falling back to the default collector. The assignment moves out of the try block in setSystemEnvs because that block swallows errors, which would have turned the rejection into a silent fallback. Tests now clear both URL variables before each case and restore the originals after.

Request urls are built as `${API_URL}/${path}`, so an override carrying a query or fragment would swallow the endpoint path and the upload would hit / instead. Parse with URL, require an https protocol and a hostname, reject search and hash, and trim a trailing slash so paths are not doubled.

A bare trailing ? or # leaves URL.search and URL.hash empty, so the value passed validation and the appended endpoint became a query or fragment; return origin + pathname with no trailing separator instead. The override can also carry credentials and callers log the error, so the messages no longer echo the value.

35-36: Data Integrity & Integration
The asymmetry between the module-load API_URL and the call-time remoteReporterApiUrl() is real in the code. The comment's claim needs a supported path that changes BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_API_URL after constants.js loads. The inspected bin/ source contains no such write. The only writes are in the unit tests, which set the variable before the call under test. A later change could come only from external user code or an environment mutation outside the repository, and nothing inspected establishes that path. The proposed test change would also only add coverage for a state that the repository does not produce. Without that premise, the finding is an intent question, not a supported defect.
setSystemEnvs tests only prove the url is handed to the remote machine. These load the helper with the override set and a stubbed axios, and assert nodeRequest builds its request url from it, with the default covered when nothing is set.

The approach looks right: the machine's reporter now posts to the same collector as the cli that launched the build, and because testhubHandler builds its requests from the same API_URL, build creation follows the override too. Older packages on the machine ignore the variable, so nothing breaks. Allowing https only and never echoing the value in errors cover the JWT concern.
One thing I'd fix before merge (inline on constants.js), plus a few minor points inline.
The PR body has fallen behind the code:
"Read at call time, so no module reloads in tests" doesn't hold for API_URL, which is read when the module loads; collectorUrl.js reloads the module for that reason.
"Three unit tests added" is now seven in test/unit/bin/helpers/utils.js plus two in collectorUrl.js.
constants.js is loaded through bin/helpers/utils.js, which every command loads, so validating at module load meant a bad BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_API_URL crashed init, info, stop and the reporter on the machine at startup, outside any handler. API_URL becomes apiUrl(), read when a request is built; nodeRequest rejects rather than throws, since its executor is async and a throw there would never reach the returned promise. validateCollectorUrls() runs at runs.js:136, before TestHubHandler.launchBuild, so a bad value fails before a build exists. Comments in constants.js trimmed to the one that earns its place.

Re-reviewed: all addressed, thanks. One nit: validateCollectorUrls() only checks BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_API_URL when ..._REMOTE_API_URL is unset. Add an apiUrl() call alongside it so a bad value fails before launchBuild instead of failing the requests later.
remoteReporterApiUrl() short-circuits past apiUrl() when the remote override is set, so a malformed general override went unchecked until the first request. validateCollectorUrls() now calls both, with a test for the short-circuit case.
Jira: A11Y-13909
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Fixed in 7169d3d. `validateCollectorUrls()` now calls `apiUrl()` alongside `remoteReporterApiUrl()`, so a bad general override fails before `launchBuild` even when the remote one is set and valid. Added a test for exactly that short-circuit case: general `http://`, remote valid `https://`, expects the throw to name `BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_API_URL`.
Suite is 740 passing with the same 16 pre-existing failures as master.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Re-reviewed 7169d3d: validateCollectorUrls() now checks both overrides, and the new test covers a bad general override alongside a valid remote one. Nothing else from me.
… test real
Two findings from the SDK PR review:
Setting only BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_REMOTE_API_URL leaves this process
on its built-in collector while the machine reports to another one, so the build
and its test events can land in two places with nothing detecting it. That split
is correct in the Jenkins flow, where the built-in default has been pointed at
the same environment, and wrong anywhere else - which the code cannot tell apart,
so this warns rather than rejects.
The third case in collectorUrl.js promised that loading the module never throws
on a bad value, but proxyquire's noPreserveCache clears only the proxied module
and its stubs, and the url is resolved in constants.js. That stayed a cache hit,
so hoisting the resolution to module scope would not have turned the test red -
verified by doing exactly that, which now fails. The loader drops constants.js
and the test asserts the load explicitly.
Env var names move into constants.js so the validator and the resolvers share
one spelling.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…v key
Second round of SDK PR review findings.
The warning added in the last commit interpolated the raw env value, which
contradicts the rule the validator states a few lines up: a collector url can
carry credentials and callers log it. It now logs the normalized accessor,
whose origin has already dropped any userinfo. The validator also rejects a
url carrying a username or password outright, so the stripping is explicit
rather than a silent side effect of normalization.
setSystemEnvs still spelled the forwarded key as a literal while every other
reference used the imported constant, so a rename could have split the
producer from the consumer - the exact failure this PR exists to prevent.
Tests: the no-override path (what every build takes) now has a case, and so
does the userinfo rejection.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
httpsOverride normalizes to origin + pathname, so the path survives and can
carry a token. The warning now names the host, which is the part that answers
the question it asks - whether the two collectors are the same environment -
and a test pins that a path in the value never reaches the log.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The SDK PR Review Agent has run on the latest commit and come back clean: every changed region judged, nothing blocking.
Its verdict is in a comment further up this thread rather than down here, because the agent updates that same comment in place each time it runs, and this repo has no gate workflow to surface it as a check.
Four rounds to get there. It raised five things, all fixed since: a remote-only collector override that would have split a build's events across two collectors, a test that could never have failed because the module it guarded stayed cached, a credential-bearing value in the new warning, an env key spelled out instead of shared, and an untested path every build takes.
The agent posts only its verdict, never the findings, so the fixes are the record. It's advisory and doesn't gate merge. CodeRabbit approved the same commit.

Problem
The Test Observability reporter (
bin/testObservability/reporter) runs on the BrowserStack machine, from that machine's own install of this package, andbin/testObservability/helper/constants.jshard-coded the collector tohttps://collector-observability.browserstack.com. When the cli that created the build points at any other collector, the machine's per-testTestRunStarted/TestRunFinishedevents still went to prod, and the build's real collector never received them.Downstream on a staging environment: every test case in TestHub stayed nameless (
name,filename,cbt_platformNULL), and Accessibility, which keys test cases on those fields, collapsed an entire spec into one page. A11Y-13909 was a 5-URL Cypress spec recording 1 of 5.Change
constants.js:API_URLbecomesapiUrl(), read when a request is built rather than at module load.remoteReporterApiUrl()prefersBROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_REMOTE_API_URL, for the case where the machine cannot reach the cli's own collector (a private staging ingress), and otherwise falls back to it. An override must parse as a URL, behttps:, have a hostname, and carry no query or fragment; errors never echo the value, since it can carry credentials and callers log them.helper.jsandcrashReporter/index.jscallapiUrl()per request.nodeRequestrejects rather than throws on a bad value: its executor isasync, so a throw there would never reach the returned promise.utils.js#setSystemEnvsforwards the resolved URL asBROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_API_URLinsystem_env_vars— the same channelBS_TESTOPS_JWTandBS_TESTOPS_BUILD_HASHED_IDalready travel on, which the machine writes into the Cypress process environment before the reporter loads.utils.js#validateCollectorUrls, called atruns.js:136, checks both overrides beforeTestHubHandler.launchBuild, so a malformed value fails before a build exists. With neither variable set the forwarded value is the previous constant, so prod behaviour is unchanged. Older packages on the machine ignore the variable.
Tests
Nine cases in
test/unit/bin/helpers/utils.jscovering the forwarded value: default, general override, remote override preferred, non-https rejected, query or fragment rejected, bare delimiter normalised, trailing slash trimmed. Three intest/unit/bin/testObservability/collectorUrl.jscovering the request destination itself: the override reachesnodeRequest, the default applies when unset, and a bad value surfaces on use rather than at module load.Full suite run on this branch and on
master: the 16 pre-existing failures are identical on both.Validation
Run on a BrowserStack staging environment (
rengg-regression-6-nov-25), 5-URL Cypress spec, Chrome 148 on OS X Monterey, this branch installed on the machine. Before — TestHub test cases for the same spec:
Accessibility: 5 test cases, 1 distinct signature, 1 page reported. Report:
Rule Type Check: FAILED — Missing: TYPE_B2, TYPE_C2.After — same spec, same environment:
10 of 10 test cases named and attributed (5 tests plus 5
after eachhooks). Accessibility: 5 test cases, 5 distinct signatures. Report:Rule Type Check: All rule types detected (A, B1, B2, C1, C2, AI).Related PRs, in merge order: common-infra-ops#4442 (DNS), release-engineering-infra-ops#2937 (the public ingress the machine can reach), this PR, then browserstack-cd#26425 (passes the host on rengg).
