fix(agent-device): an allocate's device mode reaches the lease request (#1223) - #1225
The agent-device front now reads an allocate's deviceMode (slim | full) into the lease request's mode, as ADR 0007 §2 asks of every transport. Why: Apple Pay / PassKit (Wallet) flows need a full iOS simulator on a farm whose ios.defaultMode is slim, and through agent-device every lease got the default.
leaseCallFields reads deviceMode; planOf puts it in the plan as mode, so lease.request and lease.requested carry it as asked.
A bad deviceMode reaches lease.request, whose schema is the one check, and answers refused by simlock: mode: Invalid option: expected one of "slim"|"full". deviceMode: null is absent, like osVersion, physical and ttlMs.
The allocate forwarded to the agent-device daemon drops deviceMode, and ruleLeaseKeys removes it from commands and batch steps, as for deviceBaseline.
The test is in its own device-mode.test.ts, because edge.test.ts may only shrink (ADR 0063).
Website page and module manual updated.
Client side: callstack/agent-device#4183 is merged and unreleased, so the docs say --device-mode needs the release that adds it.
Status
Allocate with deviceMode full or slim makes a lease request whose mode is that value and grants a device of that mode — device-mode.test.ts; removing the read turns it red
Invalid deviceMode refused with simlock's message, and no lease is made; null gets the default — same test
The forwarded allocate and every command or batch step carry no deviceMode — device-mode.test.ts; removing either strip turns a test red
pnpm exec vitest run --project unit src/agent-device/ src/source-hygiene.test.ts — 518 passed, 1 skipped, at dd3237b; typecheck and oxlint clean
Real gateway + worker (0.5.0 with this patch, before the refusal moved to lease.request), raw /v1/agent-device/rpc: deviceMode: "full" → lease mode: full, 0 disabled launchd labels; no deviceMode → mode: slim, 170 disabled (incl. com.apple.passd). Not repeated on this head
Assumptions
Assumption: new ADR? — no; ADR 0007 §2 already decides it, this closes a gap against it
Assumption: field name — deviceMode, because agent-device's mode is taken by other commands

External contribution: the spec, code and claims briefs ran as separate agents from a fork clone, not through the reviewer agent, so the ledger's metrics are unknown. The round 2 code lens had no dependencies and marked itself incomplete, so its coordinator then ran the tests and three mutation probes above. Spec ran in round 1 only.

The agent-device allocation flow now accepts slim and full as deviceMode values. It passes an accepted value to Simlock as mode and removes deviceMode from the allocation forwarded to the daemon. Tests cover accepted values and refusal of invalid values. The documentation describes the option and its refusal message.

Severity of issue fixed: Medium
Merge Risk: Low · up to 50266
Older iOS runtimes receive full simulators even when slim is requested or configured as the default. The documentation should clarify this, but the change is otherwise mergeable.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 50266
Mode selection uses the existing authenticated lease path, input validation, and ownership controls. No new cross-user authority or weakened security boundary was identified. Remaining uncertainty concerns live simulator behavior and an inherited failure-recovery limitation.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The newly controllable outcome is the mode of the device obtained through an allocation, potentially on a gateway-selected worker. Repeated requests still use ordinary lease admission and requester-limit checks. The reviewed translation does not grant administrative authority or change the principal used for lease operations.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The front requires an authenticated agent identity before RPC routing. Allocation carries that identity into lease dispatch and daemon exchange. Gateway lease-scoped forwarding compares the placed lease owner with the authenticated principal and refuses mismatches; deviceMode does not replace these controls.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — A schema-refused allocation can leave an asked marker that excludes its lease ID from gateway adoption until a clearing event or disposal. Invalid deviceMode now reaches this existing limitation, but an empty imageTag already reached the same pre-admission failure at the base, with the same caller privileges and caller-selected IDs. No expanded effective exposure was established. The consequence for later same-ID adoption was not exercised end to end.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Consider giving unsuccessful pre-admission bookkeeping a bounded, concurrency-aware lifecycle, with coverage for invalid requests followed by same-ID allocation and adoption. This addresses an inherited recovery-state limitation rather than a demonstrated regression.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is specific and relevant to the changeset. It states that the agent-device front now maps an allocate's deviceMode (slim | full) to the lease request's mode, as ADR 0007 §2 requires. It explains the reason: full iOS simulators are needed for Apple Pay / PassKit flows on farms whose ios.defaultMode is slim. It also describes the leaseCallFields and planOf changes, the refusal of invalid values by the lease.request schema, the stripping of deviceMode from the forwarded allocate and from commands and batch steps, the new device-mode.test.ts, and the website and manual updates. The verification status and the note about the unreleased client-side flag match the raw summary.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1223 requires an allocate mode field (mode: "full" or "slim") to reach lease.request as mode. An invalid mode must be refused. At head, leaseCallFields in src/agent-device/shared/rpc.ts reads only params["deviceMode"]. stringFields in src/agent-device/front/allocate.ts maps only fields.deviceMode to mode. forwardedBody drops only deviceMode. An allocate with mode: "full" therefore sets no lease-request mode. The PR description and objectives cite a correction comment on #1223 that renames the field to deviceMode. That comment is not in the supplied issue text, so it cannot be verified. The supplied current requirement still names mode. The edge.test.ts coverage also uses deviceMode only. The requirement for lease-request mode pass-through and refusal of invalid values is met only for deviceMode.
Resolution
Choose one of two resolutions. (a) Make the allocate input named in #1223 work: read mode in leaseCallFields and planOf, map it to lease-request mode, exclude it from the forwarded daemon request, and add tests for mode: "full", mode: "slim", an invalid mode, and an absent or null mode. (b) Update the #1223 issue text so its current requirement names deviceMode, and provide that updated text for this review. Then re-run this assessment against the updated requirement.

callstackincubator#1223)
The agent-device front built the lease request from a fixed field list, so
a request for a full iOS simulator got the worker's default. It now reads
agent-device's `deviceMode` (`--device-mode`) into the lease's `mode`
(ADR 0007 §2), refuses one that is neither slim nor full, and keeps it off
the allocate agent-device receives.

…lstackincubator#1223)
The front checked `deviceMode` against its own list of modes, a second copy
of the rule `lease.request`'s schema enforces (architecture rule 10). It now
passes the value through as ADR 0007 §2 asks, so a bad one answers `refused
by simlock:` with simlock's message. `deviceMode: null` stays absent, as
`osVersion`, `physical` and `ttlMs` do.

Answers to CodeRabbit's review and pre-merge checks, at 4c0249b.
deviceMode: null (Minor): not changed, null is absent by design. The front treats null as absent on every field, and tests pin it: physical, ttlMs, osVersion. Refusing it for this one key would make it the exception. A test now pins null for deviceMode too.
Same lines: the front's check is gone. It repeated lease.request's schema (architecture rule 10). A bad value now passes through, as ADR 0007 §2 asks, and answers:
refused by simlock: mode: Invalid option: expected one of "slim"|"full"
Linked issues (mode vs deviceMode): not changed. agent-device already uses mode for other commands, so its key is deviceMode. The correction on #1223 says so. The lease request still gets mode.
Docstring coverage: not applicable. This repo allows only why: comments (architecture rule 17).

Defer the --device-mode CLI instructions until a client supports the option.
The permitted agent-device releases through 0.21.36 do not register --device-mode. No compatible released client version is available in the inspected releases. Remove the new CLI instructions from the manual and website until agent-device ships the option.

This affects only the new selector workflow and does not break existing allocation. Major severity is not warranted.

The current assertions read lease.requested, while granted only checks that allocation succeeded. Configure this rig with a slimmable OS version and retain the allocation responses for the "full" and "slim" cases. Assert the effective granted mode (device.mode ?? "full") for both responses. This adds coverage to the same edge path without duplicating the lower-level mode tests.

… granted mode (callstackincubator#1223)
No released agent-device has `--device-mode` (callstack/agent-device#4183 is
open), so the manual and website name the field the front reads. The edge
test also checks the mode of the granted device, which `lease.requested`
cannot show: it is logged before the core resolves the mode.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Both findings in this review are fixed in 85e95e0.
--device-mode docs (Minor): fixed. The flag is not in agent-device v0.21.35 (the version simlock pins), v0.21.36 (latest) or its main; callstack/agent-device#4183 is open. The manual and website now name the wire field, deviceMode → mode, and the website says 0.21.36 has no flag. I kept the mapping rather than remove it, because the front does accept that field.
Granted mode (Trivial): fixed. The test now uses a slimmable OS and checks the granted device's mode. Forcing the core's resolved mode fails only the new lines:
always full: edge.test.ts:782 expected 'full' to be 'slim'
always slim: edge.test.ts:781 expected 'slim' to be 'full'

#1254)
The agent-device front now reports the granted mode: `data.lease.device`
carries `deviceMode`, the mode the device has (ADR 0007 §8). Why:
callstack/agent-device#4183 can only check a requested mode if the
backend reports the grant, as [its maintainer
asked](callstack/agent-device#4183 (comment)).
- `withGrantedDevice` takes `grant.device` and adds `deviceMode` from
`device.mode`. A phone has no mode, so no key.
- Released agent-device (0.21.36) reads named fields only and ignores
it.
- A slim request can be granted `full`, and that is not an error (ADR
0007 §4, §8). A client should refuse only `slim` granted for `full`.
- Builds on #1225, now merged, which sends the requested mode; this
reports the mode the device has.
### Status
- [x] Simulator and emulator replies carry `deviceMode`, slim and full,

`gateway-front.test.ts`, red before the fix
- [x] A phone's reply has no `deviceMode` — `edge.test.ts`, red when a

head
- [x] Real simulator: full and slim replies carry the granted
`deviceMode` (local slow-lane test, 2026-11-05)
## Assumptions
- Assumption: field name — `deviceMode`, not simlock's `mode`, because
`lease.device` is agent-device's reply shape and #4183 reads that key
- Assumption: no issue — this answers a request on #4183, so the branch
has no issue number

Why: Apple Pay / PassKit (Wallet) flows need a full iOS simulator on a farm whoseios.defaultModeisslim, and through agent-device every lease got the default.leaseCallFieldsreadsdeviceMode;planOfputs it in the plan asmode, solease.requestandlease.requestedcarry it as asked.deviceModereacheslease.request, whose schema is the one check, and answersrefused by simlock: mode: Invalid option: expected one of "slim"|"full".deviceMode: nullis absent, likeosVersion, physicalandttlMs.deviceMode, andruleLeaseKeysremoves it from commands and batch steps, as fordeviceBaseline.device-mode.test.ts, becauseedge.test.tsmay only shrink (ADR 0063).Client side: callstack/agent-device#4183 is merged and unreleased, so the docs say
--device-modeneeds the release that adds it.Status

External contribution: the spec, code and claims briefs ran as separate agents from a fork clone, not through the
revieweragent, so the ledger's metrics are unknown. The round 2 code lens had no dependencies and marked itself incomplete, so its coordinator then ran the tests and three mutation probes above. Spec ran in round 1 only.Written by an agent.
