feat: record and display where commits were posted - #1384
Record where commits were posted and display a small source label on commit cards. Sources are determined from the posting request, not from a client-supplied commit field.
Should posting sources be displayed publicly or only recorded? Visible labels remain in this PR pending maintainer feedback.

After
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Commit cards show where a post came from, such as the web, mobile apps, macOS, CLI, or API. Posts created before source tracking may not display a label.
Post source information is included in account exports and carries over when scheduled posts are published.
Privacy
Source information is cleared from posts retained as tombstones after account deletion.
Documentation
The Writing commits guide explains source labels and when they may be unavailable.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
Commits and scheduled commits now store a source classification derived from the request or CLI route. Commit responses, exports, and cards expose source information when available. Account deletion clears source values on affected commits.
A string-backed enum defines commit sources. Nullable source fields are added to commits and scheduled commits, and the creation actions store supplied values.
Responses include non-null source values, exports include source fields and use schema version 9, and cards display a source label when a source exists. Supporting tests and documentation cover these outputs.
Source clearing during account deletion app/Actions/DeleteUser.php, tests/Unit/Actions/DeleteUserTest.php
Account deletion clears source values on user commits and on retained organization commits associated with the deleted user. Tests cover the cleared values.
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1258: The issue requests source labels next to commit timestamps; this change records commit sources and displays labels on commit cards.
Possibly related PRs
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1168: Both changes store and display commit source metadata. That PR also adds declared source values and source filtering.
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1322: Both changes store sources on commits and scheduled commits and display source labels. That PR derives API sources from a header or user agent.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 8a7ab
This change records and displays where posts were made. No concrete merge-blocking risk was found in the supplied context. Maintainers have raised a product question about whether source data should be retained, but that is not a code defect.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 036cf
The change adds coarse posting-platform attribution without changing posting permissions. The main considerations are keeping attribution non-authoritative, preserving deletion guarantees, and coordinating the database rollout. No introduced authorization bypass was identified in the inspected paths.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The new disclosure is a coarse source category attached to a commit, including organization-authored commits. CommitResource includes it in the guest-visible projection of otherwise visible, non-deleted commits. The card renders a fixed label rather than a raw device identifier, app ID, or credential.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A poster can influence attribution through client-declared app identity or recognized user-agent markers. This makes source descriptive rather than proof of an official client. The PR newly surfaces that classification publicly, but no authorization or visibility decision based on it was found in the inspected consumers; this is not retained as a security vulnerability.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — API creation remains behind signed-request authentication. Middleware verifies the request, requires an approved Device, sets the authenticated user, and attaches that Device before controller execution. Controllers derive source rather than accepting the commit payload's source field, so choosing a label does not grant another identity or posting authority.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Source cleanup follows the existing ownership and transactional lifecycle rather than introducing a separate asynchronous erasure step. User locking, scheduled-row cascading deletion, transactional submission, and explicit source clearing support cleanup across deletion orderings. Static inspection found no source-specific race, but a direct concurrent account-deletion/submission test was not found, so production interleaving behavior remains a coverage limitation.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Preserve an explicit contract that source is best-effort display metadata, not application attestation. Any future authorization, moderation exemption, or privileged routing based on source should require independently authenticated client identity.

I noticed that #1322 by @curlysanders (opened Oct 30, closes #1258) adds the same thing: an App\Enums\CommitSource enum and a nullable source column on commits and scheduled_commits, set from the same create paths. Only one of the two can land as is.
The approaches differ:
feat: add commit source badges #1322 takes the source from an X-Devnull-Client header or the User-Agent (devnull-tui/…, DevNull-Mac/…), on each request, and shows badges in more places (replies, quotes, search, scheduled commits)
this PR derives it from the app_id of the approved device, and clears it on tombstones when an account is deleted. CommitSource::fromAppId() maps ios, android and macos; other app ids, like a TUI's, would show as api
Like @GromNaN, I'm not sure displaying the source adds much. Storing it without showing it would need a reason under the data guidelines, which rule out analytics alone and ask each new column why it's needed, who sees it and when it's deleted.
@mnapoli, from the product metrics side: would knowing which client a commit came from serve anything on the Growth page (activation or retention by client, for instance)? That would help decide whether this data is worth keeping at all, for both PRs.

@jubianchi ah good point, yeah I actually added that yesterday. We'll want to have a common logic to track "where" users come from or visit the site or post. See #1505

@mnapoli@jubianchi I've updated this PR to reuse the app classification introduced in #1505.
Posting-source detection now uses "ActiveDayApp::forRequest()", so both features share the same logic for identifying Web, NativePHP, Lite Mobile, Mac and other clients.
iOS and Android are distinguished only for recognized NativePHP devices. I also removed the redundant authenticated device attribute and added regression tests.
I checked CodeRabbit's review and added the missing controller docblocks.
@GromNaN@curlysanders I'd also appreciate your thoughts on the remaining overlap with #1322 and whether the posting source should be displayed publicly or only stored.
The latest changes are pushed, and the PR is mergeable.
So after thinking more about it, I don't think we should have that (yet at least).
Storing without displaying: why? (we need to justify all personal info we store)
Displaying: sounds a little bit too personal. Do we want to publicly display whether you have an iPhone or an Android? Or whether you were on your mobile phone today or not? What do readers gain?
We could also make it optional, but all that trouble for what gain. I'm not sure it's worth it.

Summary
Record where commits were posted and display a small source label on commit cards. Sources are determined from the posting request, not from a client-supplied commit field.
Changes
Older commits and posts scheduled before source tracking may remain unlabeled.
Validation
Added tests for source classification, web submissions, native app submissions and scheduled commits.
The PR is mergeable. The latest test results and CodeRabbit's docstring coverage check still need confirmation.
