Fixes SESF-83.

Cause

Claude Code runs headersHelper with its working directory set to ~/.claude, and CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR is unset. A diagnostic log on the installed helper showed this. The old helper therefore sent X-Project-Root: /Users/lbruton/.claude, and searches without project_root fell back to the /Users/lbruton bucket. The parent claude process's working directory is the session's project.

Change

  • mcp-headers-helper.sh (new, in the repo): uses CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR, else the parent process's working directory (lsof on macOS, /proc on Linux), else pwd. It then sends that folder's git root. It prints {} for / and for the Claude config folder.
  • sessionflow-server.sh: adds install-headers-helper and headers-helper-status, in the same pattern as the MCP bridge.
  • setup.sh: installs the helper through install-headers-helper and drops the inline heredoc.
  • CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md: a gotcha entry for the helper.
  • tests/test_headers_helper.py: covers the env var, the parent working directory, a subfolder resolving to its git root, /, the config folder and JSON escaping.

Verification

  • ruff check . is clean. pytest: 693 passed, 120 skipped.
  • The helper is installed on this Mac. A headless claude -p started in the repo printed Scope: /Volumes/DATA/GitHub/SessionFlow, … (before the fix: /Users/lbruton (nearest indexed parent of /Users/lbruton/.claude)).

Desktop Code tab

The Code tab does not use this helper while sessionflow is also defined in claude_desktop_config.json. On a name collision, Desktop uses the claude_desktop_config.json definition, which here is the mcp-remote stdio bridge, and that bridge sends no X-Project-Root. That is a local config fix (give the server one definition) and needs no code change. After that fix, Code-tab sessions run this helper from ~/.claude like the CLI does, so this change is needed for them too.

Claude Code runs headersHelper with its working directory set to
~/.claude and without CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR, so the old helper sent
X-Project-Root: /Users/lbruton/.claude and every search defaulted to the
home-folder bucket instead of the session's project.

The helper moves into the repo as mcp-headers-helper.sh. It takes the
project from CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR, else the parent claude process's working
directory (lsof on macOS, /proc on Linux), then that folder's git root.
It prints {} for / and for the config folder, so the server reports no
current project rather than a wrong scope.

sessionflow-server.sh gains install-headers-helper and
headers-helper-status; setup.sh installs through it.

Walkthrough

Adds a helper that resolves a project root and emits it as an X-Project-Root header. Adds server commands to install the helper and check the installed copy. Updates setup, tests, and operational documentation.

Changes

Headers helper

Layer / File(s) Summary
Project-root header resolution
mcp-headers-helper.sh, tests/test_headers_helper.py
The helper checks CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR, the parent process’s working directory, then its own working directory. It uses the Git root when available and emits escaped JSON output, or {} for specified excluded roots. Tests cover these paths and output.
Helper installation and setup
sessionflow-server.sh, setup.sh, AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, tests/test_headers_helper.py
The server adds commands to install the helper and check whether the installed copy is executable and matches the source. Setup calls the installer. The documentation describes project discovery and the commands.

Possibly related PRs

  • lbruton/SessionFlow#85: PR #85 uses the X-Project-Root header to select indexed project roots; this PR adds the helper that emits the header.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review ce898

The new helper fixes project-root detection for most setups. In a few edge cases it can still fall back to the home-folder scope, and the installer can loosen permissions on a private helper directory on Linux. Both are small, localized fixes, so the PR is mergeable with owner awareness.

- Line 25: Update the root-resolution flow using dir and claude_home so it

…er, keep folder mode

- Check the working folder against the config folder before the git
lookup, so a config folder inside a versioned home folder never sends
  the home folder.
- Encode the header with json.dumps, so tabs and newlines in a path stay
  valid JSON.
- Create the helper folder with mkdir -p, which keeps an existing mode.
