🔍 What was changed

  • New rr get-grpc-tools downloads buf, protoc and protoc-gen-php-grpc (everything buf generate needs) into --location, honouring --os, --arch, --stability; --buf (default ^1), --protoc and --plugin (default: the RoadRunner line, as for download-protoc-binary) override the versions.
  • download-protoc-binary keeps working and is marked deprecated in its description and the README.
  • get is now an explicit alias of get-binary: as a Symfony abbreviation it became ambiguous with get-grpc-tools.

How it works

  • protoc follows the project's protobuf runtime: since protobuf 21 the PHP runtime minor is the protoc major (3.21 → ^21.0, 4.33 → ^33.0, 5.36 → ^36.0); up to 3.20 both shared one version (~3.20.0). The decision is printed, e.g. google/protobuf v5.36.2 -> protoc ^36.0.
  • The runtime is google/protobuf from the project's own vendor/composer/installed.php (working directory, vendor-dir/COMPOSER_VENDOR_DIR honoured), then Composer\InstalledVersions of the running installation, then ext-protobuf; none or an unparsable version → latest protoc and a warning.
  • When the derived constraint cannot be installed, the command fails and suggests --protoc=<constraint>; the other tools are still installed.

Review notes

  • DLoad 1.19 cannot pick protoc on macOS or Linux arm64: protoc names those assets osx-* and aarch_64, which DLoad's OS/arch detection does not recognise, so the strict selection drops them. Linux x86_64 and Windows work. Needs a DLoad fix and a constraint bump.
  • The calendar <2000 bound and the * → >=3.0 mapping now apply only to rr and protoc-gen-php-grpc; otherwise --buf=* would have become >=3.0.
  • With RR_GITHUB_API_URL pointing at GitHub Enterprise, buf and protoc are taken from that server too.

Checklist

  • How was this tested:
    • Tested manually: get-grpc-tools against the real GitHub on Windows with google/protobuf 4.33.1 installed protoc 33.6, buf 1.75.0, protoc-gen-php-grpc 3.0.1
    • Unit tests added
    • Acceptance scenarios added (fake GitHub now also serves protobuf and buf releases)

Documentation

README: a "gRPC tools" section and the command in the Commands list.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a command to install buf, protoc, and the PHP gRPC plugin, with version options and runtime-aware protoc selection.
    • Existing binaries are preserved unless you confirm an overwrite.
    • Added the get alias for the existing binary download command.
  • Documentation
    • Added installation guidance, version defaults, options, and download requirements for gRPC tools.
    • Marked the standalone protoc download command as deprecated and directs users to get-grpc-tools.

docs: deprecate download-protoc-binary in favour of get-grpc-tools

`buf generate` needs buf, protoc and protoc-gen-php-grpc, and protoc has to match the protobuf runtime: since protobuf 21 the PHP runtime minor is the protoc major. The command derives the protoc constraint from google/protobuf installed in the project (read from the project's own installed.php, so a global or PHAR installation of this tool still sees it), then from ext-protobuf, and falls back to the latest protoc with a warning.

`get` becomes an explicit alias of get-binary: as an abbreviation it would now be ambiguous. Wildcards and unbounded constraints get the calendar bound only for the RoadRunner software, so `--buf=*` is not turned into `>=3.0`.

Walkthrough

The CLI adds get-grpc-tools to install Buf, Protoc, and the PHP gRPC plugin. The command derives a Protoc version constraint from a detected protobuf runtime or accepts explicit constraints. DLoad adds download configuration for Buf and Protoc.

Changes: gRPC tools installation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect protobuf runtime and derive Protoc constraints
src/Internal/Environment/ProtobufRuntime.php, tests/Unit/Internal/Environment/ProtobufRuntimeTest.php
Runtime detection checks project Composer metadata, the running Composer installation, and the PHP extension. Supported runtime versions produce a Protoc constraint.
Add Buf and Protoc download support
src/Internal/Downloader/DLoadDownloader.php, tests/Unit/Internal/Downloader/DLoadDownloaderTest.php, tests/Acceptance/Server/*, tests/Acceptance/VersionsTest.php
DLoad adds Buf and Protoc repositories and applies calendar-version bounds only to RoadRunner software. Acceptance fixtures and tests cover the added release sources and archives.
Register and validate the gRPC tools command
src/GetGrpcToolsCommand.php, bin/rr, src/GetBinaryCommand.php, src/DownloadProtocBinaryCommand.php, tests/Unit/GetGrpcToolsCommandTest.php, tests/Unit/Stub/DLoadGetSpy.php, tests/Acceptance/GrpcToolsTest.php, tests/Unit/GetBinaryCommandTest.php, tests/Unit/DownloadProtocBinaryCommandTest.php, README.md
The command selects tool versions, checks existing binaries, and reports download results. The CLI registers it, tests cover its behavior, and the README documents the command and the deprecated command.

The new command cannot install Protoc on macOS or Linux arm64 with the locked downloader, and its acceptance test is sensitive to the developer’s PHP extensions. Fix the downloader compatibility before merging.

L134:
L135: feat(software): read software definitions from Composer packages (【69†#169】)
L136: feat(software): address the entry of a package as `<package>#<id>` and report shadowed entries fix(binary): run a binary without a shell, passing every argument as is fix(installer): keep binary names and file renames inside the destination directory fix(installer): install a binary named like `a.b` as `a.b`, not `a.b.b` fix(downloader): save an asset under a file name whatever the release API calls it fix(cli): print console tags in registry text and logs literally and strip terminal control characters fix(cli): list a software with a numeric id as configured in `dload show` A framework or CMS can ship the binaries it needs without every project copying them into its dload.xml, and without a DLoad release for each tool.
L137: Only the root package and its direct dependencies are read, and their entries never override dload.xml or the official registry (【70†#140】). Package entries are third-party input that `dload show` acts on, so the core stopped trusting any config: a version-command used to reach the shell, a binary name could leave the target directory, and on Windows escapeshellarg() corrupted `"`, `%` and `!` in arguments. Package entries are held to a stricter shape on top: one version option, file names, valid regexes.

L286: ## Installation
L287:
L288:     composer require internal/dload -W
L289: ## Quick Start
L290:
L291: 1. Install DLoad via Composer:
L292:
L293:     composer require internal/dload -W
L294:
L295: Alternatively, you can download the latest release from 【149†GitHub releases】.
L296:
L297: 2. Create your configuration file interactively:
L298:
L299:     ./vendor/bin/dload init
L300: This command will guide you through selecting software packages and create a `dload.xml` configuration file. You can also create it manually:
L301:
L302:     <?xml version="1.0"?>
L303:     <dload xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
L304:            xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/php-internal/dload/refs/heads/1.x/dload.xsd"
L305:     >
L306:        <actions>
L307:            <download software="rr" version="^2025.1.0"/>
L308:            <download software="temporal" version="^1.3"/>
L309:        </actions>
L310:     </dload>
L311:   3. Download configured software:
L312:
L313:     ./vendor/bin/dload get
L314:
L315: 4. Integrate with Composer (optional):
L316:
L317:     {
L318:         "scripts": {
L319:             "post-update-cmd": "dload get --no-interaction -v || \"echo can't dload binaries\""
L320:         }
L321:     }
L322: ## Command Line Usage

L388:
L389: ## Configuration Guide
L390: ### Interactive Configuration
L391:
L392: The easiest way to create a configuration file is using the interactive `init` command:
L393:
L394:     ./vendor/bin/dload init
L395:
L396: This will:
L397:
L398: * Guide you through selecting software packages
L399: * Show available software with descriptions and repositories
L400: * Generate a properly formatted `dload.xml` file with schema validation
L401: * Handle existing configuration files gracefully
L402: ### Manual Configuration
L403: Create `dload.xml` in your project root:
L404:
L405:     <?xml version="1.0"?>
L406:     <dload xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
L407:            xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/php-internal/dload/refs/heads/1.x/dload.xsd"
L408:            temp-dir="./runtime">
L409:         <actions>
L410:             <download software="rr" version="^2025.1" />
L411:             <download software="temporal" />
L412:             <download software="frontend" extract-path="frontend" />
L413:         </actions>
L414:     </dload>
L415: ### Download Types
L416:
L417: DLoad supports three download types that determine how assets are processed:
L418: #### Type Attribute
L419:
L420:     <!-- Explicit type specification -->
L421:     <download software="psalm" type="phar" />        <!-- Download .phar without unpacking -->
L422:     <download software="frontend" type="archive" />  <!-- Force archive extraction -->
L423:     <download software="rr" type="binary" />         <!-- Binary-specific processing -->
L424:
L425:     <!-- Automatic type handling (recommended) -->
L426:     <download software="rr" />           <!-- Uses all available handlers -->
L427:     <download software="frontend" />     <!-- Smart processing based on software config -->
L428: #### Default Behavior (No Type Specified)
L429:
L430: When `type` is not specified, DLoad automatically uses all available handlers:
L431: * Binary processing: If software has `<binary>` section, performs binary presence and version checking
L432: * Files processing: If software has `<file>` section and asset is downloaded, processes files during unpacking
L433: * Simple download: If no sections exist, downloads asset without unpacking
L434:
L435:     <!-- registry list -->
L436:     <software name="complex-tool">
L437:         <binary name="tool" pattern="/^tool-.*/" />
L438:         <file pattern="/^config\..*/" extract-path="config" />
L439:     </software>
L440:     <!-- actions list -->
L441: <!-- Uses both binary and files processing -->
L442:     <download software="complex-tool" />
L529: In GitHub Actions the directory can be carried between workflow runs, so a run spends the rate limit only on releases published since the previous one:
L530:
L531: - name: Restore DLoad version registry
L532:       uses: actions/cache@v4
L533:       with:
L534:         path: ./runtime/dload-cache
L535:         key: dload-registry-${{ github.run_id }}
L536:         restore-keys: dload-registry-
L537:
L538:     - run: ./vendor/bin/dload get
L539:       env:
L540:         DLOAD_CACHE_DIR: ./runtime/dload-cache
L545: ### Build Action Configuration
L546:
L547:     <actions>
L548:         <!-- Basic configuration using local velox.toml -->
L549:         <velox config-file="./velox.toml" />
L550:
L551:         <!-- With specific versions -->
L552:         <velox config-file="./velox.toml"
L553:                velox-version="2025.1.1"
L554:                golang-version="^1.22"
L555:                roadrunner-ref="v2025.1.2"
L556:                binary-path="./bin/rr"
L557:                debug="true" />
L558:
L559:         <!-- Custom plugins -->
L560:         <velox>
L566: Attribute  | Description
L567: --- | ---
L568: `velox-version` | Version constraint for the Velox build tool to use
L569: `golang-version` | Go version constraint required for building RoadRunner
L570: `roadrunner-ref` | RoadRunner Git reference (tag, commit, or branch) to use as the base for building
L571: `config-file` | Path to base configuration file that may be merged with remote API responses or other sources
L572: `binary-path` | Output path for the built RoadRunner binary. File extension is automatically added based on OS (`.exe` for Windows). Defaults to current working directory
L573: `debug` | Build RoadRunner with debug symbols to profile it with pprof (boolean, defaults to `false`)
L574: ### Build Process
L575:
L576: DLoad automatically handles the build process:
L577: 1. Golang Check: Verifies Go is installed globally (required dependency)
L578: 2. Velox Preparation: Uses Velox from global installation, local download, or downloads automatically if needed
L579: 3. Configuration: Copies your local velox.toml to build directory
L580: 4. Building: Executes `vx build` command with specified configuration
L581: 5. Installation: Moves built binary to target location and sets executable permissions
L582: 6. Cleanup: Removes temporary build files
L583:
L584: Note
L585: DLoad requires Go (Golang) to be installed globally on your system. It does not download or manage Go installations.
L586: ### Configuration File Generation
L587:
L588: You can generate a `velox.toml` configuration file using the online builder at 【150†https://build.roadrunner.dev/†build.roadrunner.dev】
L589:
L590: For detailed documentation on Velox configuration options and examples, visit 【151†https://docs.roadrunner.dev/docs/customization/build†docs.roadrunner.dev】
L591:
L592: This web interface helps you select plugins and generates the appropriate configuration for your custom RoadRunner build.
L593: ### Using Downloaded Velox
L594:
L595: You can download Velox as part of your build process instead of relying on a globally installed version:
L596:
L597:     <actions>
L598:         <download software="velox" extract-path="bin" version="2025.1.1" />
L599:         <velox config-file="velox.toml"
L600:               golang-version="^1.22"
L601:               roadrunner-ref="2024.1.5" />
L602:     </actions>
L603:
L604: This ensures consistent Velox versions across different environments and team members.
L605: ### DLoad Configuration
L606:

L672:     </dload>
L673: ### Software Elements
L674:
L675: #### Repository Configuration
L676:
L677: * type: Currently supports "github"
L678:   * uri: Repository path (e.g., "username/repo")
L679: * asset-pattern: Regex pattern to match release assets
L680: * tag-prefix: Text before the version in release tags, e.g. `bun-` for `bun-v1.4.2`. Releases with other tags are ignored, so only the selected component of a monorepo with per-component tags (release-please) is used
L681: #### Binary Elements
L682:
L683: * name: Binary name for reference
L684: * pattern: Regex pattern to match binary in assets
L685:   * Automatically handles OS/architecture filtering
L686:
L687: #### File Elements
L688:
L689: * pattern: Regex pattern to match files
L690:   * extract-path: Optional extraction directory
L691: * Works on any system (no OS/architecture filtering)
L692:
L693: ## Use Cases
L694: ### Development Environment Setup
L695:
L696:     # One-time setup for new developers

You can generate a `velox.toml` configuration file using the online builder at https://build.roadrunner.dev/ ...       run: GITHUB_TOKEN=${{ secrets.GITHUB_TOKEN }} ./vendor/bin/dload get ...       script:
## Command Line Usage

### Initialize Configuration

    # Create configuration file interactively
    ./vendor/bin/dload init

    # Create configuration in specific location
    ./vendor/bin/dload init --config=./custom-dload.xml

    # Create minimal configuration without prompts
    ./vendor/bin/dload init --no-interaction

    # Overwrite existing configuration without confirmation
    ./vendor/bin/dload init --overwrite

### Download Software

    # Download from configuration file
    ./vendor/bin/dload get

    # Download specific packages
    ./vendor/bin/dload get rr temporal

    # Download with specific versions and minimum stability
    ./vendor/bin/dload get rr:2025.* dolt:1.44.1 mago:1.*@alpha

    # Download with options
    ./vendor/bin/dload get rr --stability=beta --force

#### Download Options

Option  | Description  | Default
--- | --- | ---
`--path` | Directory to store binaries | Current directory
`--arch`  | Target architecture (amd64, arm64)  | System architecture
`--os` | Target OS (linux, darwin, windows) | Current OS
`--stability` | Release stability (stable, beta) | stable
`--config`  | Path to configuration file  | ./dload.xml
`--force`, `-f` | Force download even if binary exists | false

### View Software

    # List available software packages
    ./vendor/bin/dload software

    # Show downloaded software
    ./vendor/bin/dload show

    # Show specific software details
    ./vendor/bin/dload show rr

    # Show all software (downloaded and available)
    ./vendor/bin/dload show --all

### Build Custom Software

    # Build custom software using configuration file
    ./vendor/bin/dload build

    # Build with specific configuration file
    ./vendor/bin/dload build --config=./custom-dload.xml

#### Build Options

Option  | Description  | Default
--- | --- | ---
`--config`  | Path to configuration file  | ./dload.xml

The `build` command executes build actions defined in your configuration file, such as creating custom RoadRunner binaries with specific plugins. </actions>
    </dload>

### Download Types

DLoad supports three download types that determine how assets are processed:

#### Type Attribute

    <!-- Explicit type specification -->
    <download software="psalm" type="phar" />        <!-- Download .phar without unpacking -->
    <download software="frontend" type="archive" />  <!-- Force archive extraction -->
    <download software="rr" type="binary" />         <!-- Binary-specific processing -->

    <!-- Automatic type handling (recommended) -->
    <download software="rr" />           <!-- Uses all available handlers -->
    <download software="frontend" />     <!-- Smart processing based on software config -->

#### Default Behavior (No Type Specified)

When `type` is not specified, DLoad automatically uses all available handlers:

  * Binary processing: If software has `<binary>` section, performs binary presence and version checking
  * Files processing: If software has `<file>` section and asset is downloaded, processes files during unpacking
                <binary name="cli-tool" pattern="/^cli-tool.*/" />

Update DLoad before release: protoc cannot be selected on macOS and Linux arm64.

DLoad 1.19.0 does not recognize the osx-aarch_64 and linux-aarch_64 asset names used by protoc releases. The command therefore returns FAILURE on these platforms. Its error suggests changing --protoc, but that does not correct the asset-matching problem.

Update the DLoad constraint to a release that recognizes these asset names. If no such release is available, document the limitation in the README.

Update the DLoad version constraint used by GetGrpcToolsCommand so protoc
release assets named osx-aarch_64 and linux-aarch_64 are recognized on macOS and
Linux arm64; if no compatible DLoad release is available, document this
limitation in the README.

The test depends on ext-protobuf not being loaded in the test environment.

The rr subprocess calls ProtobufRuntime::detect(). With no project installed.php and no google/protobuf in the running Composer installation, detect() falls back to fromExtension(). If the PHP that runs the tests has ext-protobuf loaded, the command prints ext-protobuf <version> -> protoc ^N.0 and does not print the "Neither … is installed" warning. The assertions on Lines 61-62 then fail, and a different protoc version is installed. Developers who work on gRPC often have this extension installed.

Skip the test when \extension_loaded('protobuf') is true, or make the environment independent of the extension.

Review comment at @tests/Acceptance/GrpcToolsTest.php around lines 56 - 63:
Update installsLatestProtocWithoutRuntime in GrpcToolsTest to skip when
extension_loaded('protobuf') is true, so its warning and protoc-version
assertions only run when the protobuf extension is absent.
