fix(llc): don't stall when the token provider fails during a refresh - #3113
If the token provider threw while the SDK refreshed an expired token, two things got stuck:
WebSocket: the reconnect timer awaited the refresh outside its try, so the error escaped uncaught and the reconnect flag was never reset. The socket stayed in "connecting" for good, and a pending connectUser never completed.
HTTP:AuthInterceptor.onError awaited the refresh outside a try, so the request waiting on it never completed.
A failed refresh now ends that attempt. The socket goes through its normal connection-error path and tries again, up to maxReconnectAttempts, and the request fails with its original error.
Fixes FLU-1084. On v11, stream_core already handles a failing token provider.
Stacked on #3105 (the e2e suite); GitHub retargets it to master once that merges.
Verification
websocket_test.dart: the provider fails on the refresh after a token-expired error, and the socket still opens a new connection.
auth_interceptor_test.dart: the refresh fails, and the request is rejected with the original token-expired error without being retried.
Both tests fail without the fix.
No screenshot: this is client-side only, and the sample app can't make its token provider fail on demand.
The e2e "token invalidates" tests stay skipped. They rely on mock-only behaviour (a malformed token answered with code 41), and on decoding only the token payload, which is out of scope here.
v11: see the "Merging master into v11" comment on FLU-1084.
When the token provider threw while refreshing an expired token, the
WebSocket reconnect left the error uncaught and never tried again,
staying in "connecting", and an HTTP request waiting on the refresh
never completed. A failed refresh now ends that attempt: the socket
schedules another reconnect, and the request fails with its original
error.
Fixes FLU-1084.

Walkthrough
The HTTP interceptor now forwards token-refresh errors without retrying. The WebSocket reconnect callback catches errors from URI construction, logging, and channel initialization. Tests cover refresh failures in both paths.
The interceptor forwards a token-refresh error and skips the retry. The test checks the error code and confirms that no retry request is fetched. The changelog describes the fix.
The reconnect callback catches errors from URI construction and logging as well as channel initialization. The test checks reconnect behavior when the token provider throws on its second call.
HTTP requests now fail cleanly, but WebSocket recovery can still reuse an expired token or leave a manually disconnected socket marked connecting. Resolve these recovery issues before merging.

If the user logs out while this refresh is pending, the socket ends up stuck in connecting. disconnect() sets the status to disconnected and clears _user. When the provider then fails, which is likely right after the app clears its session, the catch below calls _onConnectionError → _reconnect(). That sets the status back to connecting, and the next timer returns early on _user == null without resetting it. From then on client.connectUser throws "Connection already in progress", so the next login fails.
A realistic trigger: the provider calls the app's backend, the app's session has also expired, and the app's auth layer logs the user out before the provider throws.
Test that reproduces it (fails on this branch):
test('logging out while a refresh is in flight leaves the socket disconnected', () async {
final user =OwnUser(id:'test-user');
var providerCalls =0;
final refresh =Completer<String>();
final providerTokenManager =TokenManager();
await providerTokenManager.setTokenOrProvider(
user.id,
provider: (userId) async {
providerCalls +=1;
// The refresh after the token expires stays pending.if (providerCalls ==2) return refresh.future;
returnToken.development(userId).rawValue;
},
);
final providerWebSocket =WebSocket(
apiKey:'api-key',
baseUrl:'ws://<local-ip>:8800',
tokenManager: providerTokenManager,
webSocketChannelProvider: (_, {protocols}) => webSocketChannel,
);
addTearDown(providerWebSocket.disconnect);
final timer =Timer(constDuration(milliseconds:300), () {
final event =Event(type:EventType.healthCheck, connectionId:'connection-id', me: user);
webSocketSink.add(json.encode(event));
});
addTearDown(timer.cancel);
await providerWebSocket.connect(user);
final tokenExpired =ErrorResponse()
..code =ChatErrorCode.tokenExpired.code
..message ='Token expired';
webSocketSink.add(json.encode({'error': tokenExpired}));
// Wait for the reconnect to start refreshing the token.awaitFuture.doWhile(() async {
awaitFuture<void>.delayed(constDuration(milliseconds:50));
return providerCalls <2;
}).timeout(constDuration(seconds:15));
// The user logs out, and the refresh then fails.
providerWebSocket.disconnect();
refresh.completeError(Exception('logged out'));
awaitFuture<void>.delayed(constDuration(seconds:2));
expect(providerWebSocket.connectionStatus, ConnectionStatus.disconnected);
});
Re-checking _user after the await fixes it. It also stops a refresh that succeeds after logout from opening a socket for the logged-out user:
try {
final uri =await_buildUri(
refreshToken: refreshToken,
includeUserDetails:false,
);
// The user may have logged out while the token was refreshing.if (_user ==null) return;
_logger?.info('[reconnect] #ws; uri: $uri');
_initWebSocketChannel(uri);
} catch (e, stk) {
if (_user ==null) return;
_onConnectionError(e, stk);
}

Confirmed, thanks for the repro. Fixed in cc64368 and 1ede391: if the socket was disconnected while the token was loading, the reconnect now ends there, whether the provider then fails or succeeds. It no longer goes through _onConnectionError, and it doesn't open a socket for the logged-out user. Covered by the a token refresh that fails/succeeds after disconnect does not reconnect tests.
