perf: cut fsyncs in the daily settlement without changing its order - #218
Main profiles, 22 hourly spark dumps 10-29 07:00 → 10-30 05:00 (peak ~30 players, ~23 ms/tick total). The daily settlement at 20:02 UTC was one 3.1 s main-thread stall (FactionManager.time → settleIncome → RealmSettlementService.settle):
DailyPreparationJournal.save → Database.saveFactionDurably once per faction: 1.42 s;
DurableJson parent-folder syncs: every durable write fsynced its folder and then every parent up to /, about 10 folder fsyncs per write on Main. Parents are now synced once per folder per process, and again only when a write has to recreate that folder. Each write still fsyncs its content, renames, and fsyncs its own folder before returning. This also trims the durable writes behind commands and menu clicks.
DurableJson.Batch + Database.saveFactionDurably(faction, batch): the three per-faction save loops write every faction file, each content-fsynced before its rename, then fsync Data/ once. The loops are prep removals, prep organization values and settlement effects. The order of in-memory changes and saves is unchanged.
The journal steps are untouched:
prepare is written before any change;
the organization values are recorded only after their batch is synced;
offline days and prepared come after that;
effects are idempotent by money-operation id, with done last.
A crash mid-batch leaves some subset of factions saved (before: the first few). The replay doesn't depend on which, so recovery is the same.
Estimate: roughly 10× fewer fsyncs per settlement. Measure on Main after deploy.
Testing
New tests count folder syncs, cover a failed then retried commit, and simulate a crash at each faction batch, checking an exact replay each time.
8611 tests locally with a Windows-only directory-fsync patch: the same 25 Windows failures as main (8606).
Dev (10-30, 11:55–16:47 UTC): all ten perf branches from this round ran together (InteractibleFurniture, Cooking, Magic, RPCharacters, Thievery, VFBuilders, SimpleFactions, Archaeo, VehicleFramework, TrialRooms). Bot probes ran on these jars and again on the previous jars for comparison. No errors from any of the ten plugins in the log, including through a scheduled restart. The settlement was triggered by setting Dev's Cache/data.json time to 86280 before start. It completed: day-preparation/37.json has prepared/settled true, settlements/37.json has done true, day 37 → 38, no SEVERE, SF stayed enabled.
Note for other contributors: settlement paths now call saveFactionDurably(faction, batch), so mocks stubbing only the one-argument version need the overload.
The 20:02 settlement on Main stalled the server thread for 3.1 s, almost
all of it in fsync. Two changes, both keeping every journal step behind
the files it depends on:
- DurableJson synced the target directory and then every parent up to
the filesystem root on each write (about 10 directory syncs on Main).
It now syncs a directory's parents once per process, and again only
when the directory has to be created. Every write still syncs the file
content, renames it and syncs its own directory before returning. This
also cuts the cost of the durable writes behind commands and menus.
- The day preparation (province removals, organization values) and the
settlement effects save every faction durably. Those saves are
independent of each other, so each step now writes all its faction
files (content synced before each rename) and syncs the Data directory
once, through DurableJson.Batch, before the journal moves on. A crash
before that sync leaves each faction file whole, old or new, and the
journal still at the step, so the replay applies the same recorded
after-values as before.
Tests cover the sync counts and a crash at each faction batch, in the
preparation and in the effects, followed by an exact replay.

Bug Fixes
Faction data is now saved more reliably during daily preparation and realm settlements, reducing the risk of incomplete changes after an interruption.
If saving fails, settlement effects such as payments and vehicle changes are held back until the process can complete successfully.
Daily preparation can be retried after a failure while retaining its original timing and avoiding repeated effects.
Faction saves can now be staged in durable batches. Settlement preparation and realm settlement commit these batches before recording progress or continuing with subsequent effects. Tests cover directory-sync tracking and recovery after simulated failures.

Database can pass faction JSON to a DurableJson.Batch. A batch replaces files and syncs affected directories on commit. Directory-sync tracking and retry behaviour have test coverage.
The journal batches faction saves for province removals and organization restoration, then commits before recording preparation progress. Tests simulate sync failures and verify retry behaviour.
Realm settlement commits faction saves before vehicle changes and other settlement effects. Tests cover recovery after a simulated failure and update mocks for the batch-save method.
The batching changes have no established production defect, but durability tests could miss regressions. Strengthening sync and persisted-state assertions is a bounded follow-up.

80-82: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Heavy lift
Add a persisted-state check for settlement saves.
The crash test mocks Database and stubs saveFactionDurably to write only the faction ID. A broken production save that drops settlement after-values would not fail any assertion in this test. Add a case that calls the real Database.saveFactionDurably(faction, batch), reloads the faction, and compares its settled values.

The stub at lines 94-97 writes only provinces to realm.json. The post-retry checks at lines 106-110 read the in-memory Movement, so a faulty organization save would still pass. Add a read of realm.json that asserts the organization values.

CodeRabbit on #218: the test helper recorded a sync on FileChannel.open, so
removing channel.force(true) from DurableJson left every sync-count assertion
passing. The mocked channel now records the sync on force(true); with the force
removed, three tests fail.

…ttlement syncs together (#220)
* perf: read menu holders without copying block state
Every menu click, drag and the once-a-second menu refresh asked the open
inventory for its holder with getHolder(). When that inventory belongs to
a block (a chest, barrel or furnace someone has open), Paper answers by
building a full snapshot copy of the block and its contents. On Main one
such click took 2 s in a single tick, and over 20 hours clickButton spent
29 s and the refresh 21 s there; the refresh asked up to seven times per
player.
SimpleFactions only checks whether the holder is one of its own menu
holders and never reads or changes a block holder, so every call now uses
getHolder(false), which returns the same holder object for plugin menus
and skips the snapshot for blocks. The click handler and the refresh now
also read the holder once and reuse it. Menus behave exactly as before.

* perf: reuse recent faction list rows on the periodic refresh
An open faction list is redrawn every second, and each pass rebuilt every
row for every viewer: ranks, stability, guilds, subjects, allies and the
viewer's relations and intelligence for each faction on the page. On Main
that was about 10 s of server time per hour at peak, the steadiest cost of
the menu refresh.
The refresh now reuses a row it built for the same viewer, character and
faction in the last 5 seconds and rebuilds it after that. A row is never
reused for another viewer, after a character switch, or for a refounded
faction with the same id. Opening the list, paging and changing the ranking
still build every row fresh, the order of the rows is worked out on every
pass as before, and a viewer's rows are dropped when they leave. A change
to a faction now reaches an open list within 5 seconds instead of 1; what
the rows show is unchanged.

* perf: sync the settlement's faction saves together
The 20:20 settlement on Main still held the server thread for 2 s. The
day preparation and the settlement effects already save their factions
through one DurableJson batch per step (#218), with one directory sync per
step, but each faction file's content was still synced on its own, one
after another, before its rename: about 1 s of the stall, in fsync.
A batch now takes each file's new content when it is written and does the
disk work in commit: it writes every content to a temporary file, syncs up
to 8 of them at a time on short-lived threads (syncs that run together
share the filesystem's journal commits), waits for all of them, then
renames each over its file and syncs each directory once, as before. The
order the journals depend on is unchanged: every content is synced before
its rename, every rename is synced before commit returns, and the journal
moves on only after commit. A crash before commit returns still leaves
each faction file whole, old or new, with the journal at the same step, so
the replay applies the same recorded after-values. A failed commit renames
nothing it could not sync, removes its temporary files and keeps the rest
of the batch for a retry.
Batch files are now replaced in commit rather than in write. Nothing reads
them in between: both callers commit right after their save loop.

* fix: keep batch failures and stale intel out of the perf changes
Review fixes for the batch syncs and the faction-list rows (CodeRabbit):
- A batch now closes every temporary file even after one close fails,
and removes each leftover temporary file on its own. Close and cleanup
failures ride on the write failure as suppressed exceptions instead of
replacing it.
- A reused faction-list row also has to match the viewer's current exact
access, so losing espionage access shows the report on the next
refresh instead of up to 5 s of exact values.
- Closing an inventory drops that viewer's cached rows.
