Summary

Daily active users are one number today, so we can't tell which app people use. Fathom can't answer it: it has no notion of an app and can't see the native apps. This records the apps each signed-in person uses each day, and charts people per day per app on the Growth page.

Daily active users, retention and what counts as "seen" don't change.

Changes

  • Data: user_active_days gets web_app, native_mobile_app, mac_app and other_app. It stays one row per person per day, and existing rows count as web.
  • Attribution: web routes are web. On the API, devices.app_id ending in :com.nativephp.devnull is mobile, a DevNull-Mac user agent is Mac, and everything else is other (terminal app, /commit script, GitHub Action).
  • Recording: UpdateUserLastSeenAt used to stop at the first request of the day, so it now runs one more statement per counted request. It only writes the first time an app is seen in a day, and otherwise neither writes nor locks the row.
  • Chart: "People by app" uses lines, because someone using two apps counts in both and stacked bars would add up to more than daily active users. A rule marks the first day a non-web app shows up, which is read from the data so no date needs setting at merge.
  • Export: each active_days entry becomes {date, web_app, native_mobile_app, mac_app, other_app}, and schema_version goes to 7.
  • Docs: PRODUCT_METRICS.md, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md and the privacy policy, with its effective date set to 6 November 2026. Adjust the date if this merges later.

New columns

Why the feature can't work without them Nothing else records which app was used on a day
Who can see them Admins as aggregates, and the person in their export
When they are deleted With the account

Decisions

From the interview on the handoff:

  • Where does the Mac app count? In its own mac_app column.
  • How is the NativePHP app recognized? First answer: a new header in the app. Then, once it turned out the app already sends app_id: devices.app_id alone, to try it, and revisit if other reads too high. iOS and Android aren't told apart.
  • How does the chart show it? Three lines at first, four with the Mac app.
  • What does the export say for days before tracking? As stored, so web_app: true even for someone who only used the phone.

Settled along the way:

  • Tracking start: derived from the data rather than a constant.
  • Bots: left out of the chart.
  • No new index: the table is small and only this admin page reads it this way.

Visual evidence

Local site with seeded data, Chromium. The chart is new, so "before" is the same page without its panel.

Before, 1440×900, light After, 1440×900, light
Growth page before, with no People by app panel People by app under Daily active users
1440×900, dark Hover after tracking started, dark Hover before tracking started, light
The chart in dark Tooltip listing the four apps Tooltip listing only web
1366×650, light 1366×650, dark
The chart at 1366 by 650, light The chart at 1366 by 650, dark
7 days picked, tracking started before the range Tracking not started yet, all web
All lines solid with no rule Only a faded web line, and a note that no other app was seen
390×844, light, emulated 390×844, dark, emulated
The chart at phone width, light The chart at phone width, dark
Range longer than the data, 90 days, hovered Three days missing, dark Days with no neighbour, light
Lines start where the data starts, aligned with the bars above The line breaks over the missing days Isolated days drawn as points

Layout shift at 1440×900: 0 on first load and on picking a range, before and after. Hovering reports up to about 0.009, all of it the tooltip overlay following the pointer. No content moves, and the existing LineChart tooltip does the same.

Device verification

Viewport and touch emulation in Chromium only. I booted an iPhone 17 simulator, but local sign-in in Safari kept redirecting to /sw.js, so the admin page was never reached there. In emulation at 390×844, a tap shows no tooltip, a horizontal drag does, and a vertical swipe scrolls the page, as with LineChart.

Limitations

  • Mobile reads low, other high: phones approved before the app sent app_id have none, so they count as other until approved again. How many is unknown, as I have no production data access. To fix it later, the app can identify itself on each request.
  • No Mac backfill: nothing stored says which app was used on a past day, so tracking starts at deploy. That first day is mixed, as people seen earlier that day already have a row saying web.
  • Deploy window: rows inserted by old code after the migration have no flag until that person's next request, so they count in no app that day. Retention and active users don't read the flags.
  • Lite app: it counts as web until it gets its own column.
  • Before captures: missing for 1440×900 dark and for 390×844. Before only differs by the panel's absence.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The product metrics page now includes a “People by app” chart showing daily usage across web, mobile, Mac, and other apps. Users active on multiple apps count in each applicable category, and the chart marks when app tracking began.
    • Data exports now include per-app activity flags for each active day, with the export format updated. Days before app tracking began are represented as web usage; phones approved before mobile app identification began are represented as other.
  • Documentation
    • Updated privacy information to describe app-usage data collection and how earlier activity is represented.
    • Updated the privacy policy effective date.

Adds per-app flags to user_active_days, a People by app chart on the Growth page, and the apps in the data export.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The application now classifies and records daily activity by app, reports per-app usage in operations metrics, and includes app flags in active-day exports. Privacy text and metrics documentation describe app tracking and its historical boundary.

Changes: Per-app activity tracking and reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Classify and record per-app activity
database/migrations/*, app/Enums/ActiveDayApp.php, app/Http/Middleware/UpdateLastSeenAt.php, app/Actions/UpdateUserLastSeenAt.php, tests/Feature/LastSeenTest.php, tests/Feature/UserActiveDaysMigrationTest.php, tests/Unit/Enums/ActiveDayAppTest.php, resources/js/pages/privacy/show.tsx, resources/js/lib/legal.ts, PRODUCT_METRICS.md
Daily activity rows now store web, native mobile, Mac, and other app flags. The request classifier identifies the app category, and the recording action sets the corresponding flag. Tests cover classification, recording, and migration behavior. The privacy text and metrics documentation describe app tracking.
Aggregate and return app usage
resources/js/types/operations.ts, app/Queries/AppUsageQuery.php, app/Http/Controllers/ProductMetricsController.php, tests/Unit/Queries/AppUsageQueryTest.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/ProductMetricsControllerTest.php, PRODUCT_METRICS.md
The query returns daily counts by app and the earliest non-web tracking date. The controller returns the data as appUsage. Tests cover counts, date bounds, and bot exclusion.
Display the People by app chart
resources/js/components/operations/charts.tsx, resources/js/pages/operations/metrics.tsx, resources/js/layouts/operations/layout.tsx, PRODUCT_METRICS.md
The operations metrics page displays web, mobile, Mac, and other counts in a multi-line chart. The chart marks tracking start and the current partial day. It also provides hover details and an accessible table.
Export active days with app flags
app/Actions/CreateExport.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/ExportControllerTest.php, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
The export schema advances to version 7. Each active-day entry now contains a date and four app flags instead of a date string.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 1e6ae

This change records which apps people use each day and charts them on the Growth page. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains. The known limitations are documented: older phone approvals count as other, and there is no Mac backfill.
